I was surprised to see Grace Gibbons from Dowling Catholic is now at Gilbert, making a strong 2A school probably the team to beat for a state title

That really throws a monkey wrench into the Private School / Public school debate. Dang it!

Gilbert now arguably has the male (Pollard) and female (Gibbons) runners in the state.

Really?? Did you see Gibbons' result from state a year ago? She was 29th overall in 4A, a year after being state champ. Are you thinking of Schweizer instead? Gibbons has a pretty strong track record of injuries. Qualified for but did not run 1500 at state track meet in 2012, was in a boot that day. Fall 2012 XC season was well off the standard she set the year prior.

Teammate at Gilbert, Sadie Timms won state the same year Grace did. She was 53 seconds slower and placed 15th the following year also nursing injury. Her spring track was even worse and this fall XC season, she is 2 minutes off her norm.

Not sure about Gibbons' injuries from a year ago, but she's been running quite well in her two meets this year.

She won the Pella invite by 16 seconds over the ranked Johnston girl. She might no be winning the meets by a minute or going against high level 4A competitors, but definitely running well.

B-K_Teach - do you still think that Grace Gibbons shouldn't be considered amongst the top girls CC runners?

Per the link below, Gibbons finished 2nd in the Heartland Classic with the winner from Nebraska. Below is the rest of the top 10 (Iowa runners only) and where they were ranked in the most recent ranking. There were quite a few other runners ranked in the Class 3A and Class 4A, but finished outside of the top 10 in the race.

3 - Karissa Schweizer (WDM Dowling) #4 Class 4A
4 - Ashlynn Yokom (IC West) - #1 Class 4A
5 - Jordyn Kleve (Johnston) #16 Class 4A
7 - Caroline Marnin (Ames) #5 Class 4A
8 - Megan Schott (DM Roosevlt) #19 Class 4A
9 - Shannon Gorman (CR Washington) #7 Class 4A
10 - Amber Decker (Linn-Mar) #9 Class 4A

Didn't know she had gotten 4-6 inches taller. She's not in the same ballpark as Yanek from Pleasant Valley. You can take that to the bank any day. Topham probably would get her too and possibly Seivert as well. But, she is certainly much improved and most importantly, HEALTHY this season.

I actually had a couple of notes, but I'll put the other in the district meet thread, since it pertains more there.

Anyway, Gibbons ran a 14:17 at the HOIAC conference meet (on the ISU course in Ames) last night and ran 1:24 faster than the 2nd place runner, Carly Rahn a FR teammate.
