Q&A with Southeast Polk offensive guard Gavin Douglas

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“I have been working out on the school's weight lifting program which runs 3 days out of the week at school along with working out on my own time 3-4 times a week.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“The mental aspect of the game. Preparing my mind for the moment and understanding it’s a game that has to be played one rep at a time.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I feel we have a great chance to compete, we have had a lot of people now and before we help bring this program to a level in which it has a chance to win every game played at Iowa's highest level. It's a fantastic time to be a Ram and all the credit goes to the people ahead of me who paved the way.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“It's hard to say, still very hard to determine who will give us our greatest challenge. We have a lot of great teams we get to face this year which makes it always fun to be a part of and get to compete in the CIML.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?
“Another tricky question to answer, Iowa 5A football brings out a lot of great athletes to compete against. It's hard for me to pick one individual to say is our team's greatest challenge when I can't speak for everyone on this.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“I'd love an opportunity to get to play at the next level. It's been apparent to me that I have the chance to so I am working my hardest on having a great senior season and seeing what happens after that.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I've had a lot of different schools contact me from SDSU to Winona State and many more. It's hard to say who all they are but I've been in contact with a lot of Division 2 Division 1 FCS and Juco [schools] as well.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“I don't think there is any school that recruits me the most, I think every school reaches out the same. I have appreciated the contact and support Iowa Central has because I know they are a very trustworthy and great program but it's still early and I am excited to see what schools continue to contact me.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“Yes I have made a few trips up to Minnesota and South Dakota this year, I plan on making my way up to Upper Iowa this weekend which I am excited for so it's been cool to travel and explore different environments.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“Already mentioned it, but I am going to Upper Iowa on the 20th otherwise that I am getting more geared up for summer season with camps and preparing for my senior season.”

What camps are you planning to do this summer?
“I plan on getting out to a few bigger camps Like SDSU and NDSU along with Lindenwood's Mega camp. I find those to be beneficial but I am also excited to get more work in at Drake, Iowa State’s, and Iowa Central’s here as well.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“I always loved UNI because Kurt Warner played there. He was a big player I idolized growing up due to his story and where he is from along with just the UNI Dome experience, I find it's a cool environment and just a place I always loved as a little kid.”

Q&A with Sioux City North outside linebacker Brayden McClain

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“For my offseason workouts I utilize the weight room 1 to 2 times every day and continuously put in work that will directly correlate with my play in the field. My school is lucky to have a great lifting program in the form of a class called total well-being that is led by our head coach Mitch Mohr. I do tons of work that improves my strength, explosiveness, mobility, and all-around athleticism. We also have offseason skills as a team every Wednesday where I can further improve my technique at the linebacker position. I also make sure to eat a diet that supports these workouts and continues to add size to my frame.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“The thing I have improved upon most since last season is change of direction and explosiveness. I am a super explosive player and have put in work to enhance this even more because I think it is one of the most important things to have at the linebacker position and in football in general. I have also put in tons of work to improve my pass coverage abilities and lateral quickness. I’m very confident in both my run and pass defense.”

How do you feel your team will do next football season?
“I have full belief that our team next year will dominate in 5A and show that we belong as a top contender in the state. Every player at Sioux City North fully believes we have the ability to go undefeated this year. Every upcoming senior including myself has watched this program transform into something great and I believe my class plays a huge part in that. We are all set on not only making the playoffs this year, but dominating 5A as a whole. The excitement surrounding this season is immeasurable and that is visible throughout the program. Our senior led defense, and newfound leadership from upcoming sophomore quarterback Noah Conley, will be key aspects in our success.”

What team do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“I think every game we play this season is winnable and that we have the potential to go undefeated. Our toughest competition this year is Dowling which will be our last game of the season. This is a game I had hoped to get on our schedule this year. We want to show teams that we are one of the top teams in the state, and to do that we need to beat teams that are considered to be better than us. I personally think there is not a team in 5A that Sioux City North could not beat this year.”

Who is the toughest individual player your team will face off against?
“The toughest individual we face is probably Rashawd Davis from Dowling. He is their top returning scorer this year and he only matters because he could be an impact player in an important game. Realistically there is not one individual player that I am worried about playing this year.”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one?
“Yes, I would really like to play college football. As of right now my number one is Wayne State because I love the program they are building and would like to be a part of it.”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“Colleges that have shown interest in me include: Wayne, Dordt, Buena Vista, Nebraska Kearney, Morningside, Drake, Iowa Central, Augustana, and Briar Cliff.”

What school is recruiting you the hardest?
“Wayne State, Dordt, and Buena Vista.”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“Yes I attended junior days at Wayne State, Augustana, and Buena Vista. I also attended Dordt’s spring game visit day.”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“I plan to go on multiple gameday visits this year during the season.”

What camps are you planning to do this summer?
“May 28th, Drake- June 4th, SDSU- June 12.”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“My favorite college growing up was the University of Iowa. I have always been a fan of their football team since I was a little kid.”
