1) The family unit of the middle class collapsed at the same time. Middle and upper class divorces became especially prominent at the exact same time. This points to different social factors at work since these weren’t people on welfare. Bigger factors of this family structure include birth control, sexual mores changing, women’s liberation, women’s acceptance in the workplace, no fault divorce laws, the weakening grip of the church, etc.
2) If Sowell would have bothered to look at other countries, he would have noticed that many with larger social safety nets have less single parent homes. All of them, in fact. We have the worst rate of single parent homes in the entire world, And we are far from a socialist utopia.
3) Sowell used marriage data, which doesn’t account for the large portion of unmarried yet together black parents. This is a much more common occurrence in the Black community than in White America. In large part due to the #1 factor in whether a woman marries her partner when they have a child: If the father has a full-time job. We know unequivocally that blacks face discrimination in both hiring and recruiting in the work force. There’s been a systemic denial of black economic progress for generations, that will take generations to undo.

3. Over 70% of children in poverty are born to single mothers and the number of fathers that stick around, which is initially small, is almost nonexistent in 3-5 years. If you finish high school, wait until you’re married to have children (and over 20), the chances of living in poverty are low.
