Who Is Switching Classes Next Cycle?

I don't think BCL-UW will be small enough to go 8 man.

Kingsley Pierson because of a couple of bigger classes would actually miss the 8 man cutoff by .1, now I'm sure they could get the 2 year wavier, and be under in 2 years. That is also based off the BEDs information from last year, and the FRL from 2 years ago.

Saint Ansgar is another school that would be a close to small enough to go 8 man, but I doubt will ever go as long as Clevenger is there.

South O'Brien and West Monona are also close enough + free and reduced lunch. No idea if either will just know they're close enough.

I see the 2024-25 BEDS are on the IAHSAA website. At least a guy can get an idea of what schools have made significant changes in numbers. Haven't seen FRL numbers and don't recall where to find that. Also not sure who's sharing or dissolving cooperative agreements.

Are those the actual BEDS numbers for this school year though? Or is still based off a previous year?

Who does NE Goose Lake share football with? I see last time they did districts their number was 272, but this year they are only 209. They must share with a smaller school?? If not, thats a huge drop in numbers and would likely put them in 1A.

So I've heard that Bellevue Marquette is going to join Bellevue HS in football, so they will certainly go up to 1A, and then Northeast will likely drop from 2A to 1A since they will no longer have a sharing agreement??

You are correct, I think believe Bellevue was going to be going up with or without them so they decided to take them on, I actually believe that they have been together for middle school, but then high school the Marquette kids went to NE.

Recruiting an entirely new school to join the team. That's one way to get better quickly.

Bellevue will only gain a handful of Marquette kids as most dont play football. They have shared with a number of schools over the years including Dubuque Whalert

Seems like they would probably have some good athletes to contribute, since Marquette is currently the #1 ranked basketball team in 1A.

Most of those kids dont play football. I know when they were combined with Whalert it was only like 5 or 6 kids and about the same at NE. Those Marquette kids focus on basketball and baseball as I think they may have been combined with Bellevue last summer for baseball.

A 1A school where the basketball kids don't even play football... That's part of the reason we end up having school sharing agreements, and not a great development for small school high school sports.

IAHSAA's Jared Chizek just sent out an email to schools that they need to verify their enrollment #'s and FRL by next Wednesday (Jan 22nd). Iowa BOE has sent the numbers to the IAHSAA and now it's just a matter of verifying. Should be soon that we find out football classifications for the '25-'26 school years

Any chance that Garrigan moves back up? I don't think they would be forced to by enrollment, but they had over 50 kids out for high school last year and over 25 out for middle school. I also know they played a couple of 11 man JV games, this is the main reason that I am asking.

I see quite a few 8 man teams that have larger numbers participating than some class A as well as 1A schools. Not many if any teams that play 8 man want to move back up unless forced to do so.

So the state released the official BEDS numbers (like the Government not the IHSAA) and going off of the old Free and Reduced Numbers which should be close, this is where teams would fall. Also Grandview Christian isn't listed as a school, but I assume that they still are. These are in order by size.

Where did you find the updated state beds? What were the cut off numbers for each class? I think a couple could be wrong as far as the bottom of 1A and top of A

Go by public school buildings, a few you have to look up the middle schools that feed into the high school if they have an 8/9 building.

Then non public buildings

Then I did the math on a Google sheet

I’m sure these aren’t perfect and I had a Coach tell me that there are a couple of new sharing agreements but wasn’t sure who they were other than Bellevue taking on Marquette now.

I will also say an alternative center addition or online could impact these a bit as well

Thanks for all the work on this! Interesting for sure! But going off last year's free and reduced lunch means there will definitely be differences. If a few schools change even by a couple % in that then it can have a big impact along the borders of each classification.

I think the cut from 1A to A is going to be 145 and that would put 36 - 36 - 36- 48 - 48 in top 5 classes and 58 in class A the rest in 8 man that all fall at 105 and below. I just saw that BCLUW lost their multiple petitions to stay 8 man. Plus I think schools like Wayne, North Buler, Gehlen, North Union, West Monona , Highland and Starmont are all staying class A and they all fall below the 105, the last 2 in the low 90s.

The new classifications could be released any day. The deadline for schools to confirm their numbers and FRL was last Wednesday, so the IAHSAA already has all the info they need (and probably have had it for weeks). I hope they don't keep us waiting another month.

North Union is going to 8-man football.

So there is some talk on twitter of some schools getting waivers and some not, and someone from North Cedar mentioned that Midland did not receive a waiver. I don't know if this is true or not, but with the proximity between the two schools you would think that there would be some truth to it. Personally I don't see them being above the cutoff number. I am also wonder about Springville and combining with Cedar Valley Christian. If they don't combine they are below the threshold, but by combining they would be above.

With BCLUWs situation I see both sides to the argument, they are very close to the number and if you look at future classes they will probably fall below the threshold in 2 years. But, I do know that the state has allowed for the wavier to stay in 8 man so that schools were not forced to switch back in forth between the two types of football, and do things like change field goal posts. But not go down. I also know in talking in the past with someone involved in the process they do this because if takes the argument of being competitive out of the equation. I do not know what the schools argument is or was exactly, but I have seen some posts of people that I assume have some connection to the school like a parent that talked about being competitive, and the state really won't listen to that.

Woodbine is a school that I assume some are referring to with schools getting a waiver when a "large" number. And some think that they will play 11 man. I don' think that they will, mainly because if you look at their grade by grade enrollment the 9,10,11 grades are by far their biggest and they drop below the cutoff again in 2 years.

I don't think Springville is combining with CVC because that would put them in 11 man by a good amount. I have heard rumors for the last couple cycles that midland was or should have had to move up as they were over the cut line. I think the biggest issues with the waiver was I think it was Newal Fonda who was over the cut line like two cycles in a row but was given a waiver so now everyone uses them as the example. The big thing about these schools that jump back and forth and switching field dimensions yes I can see being very costly but why not just keep the field at 100 yds in length but narrow it up like it is already as its allot easier to widen your field than it is to lengthen or shorten and have to move the goal posts. You don't have to move anything to widen your field .

Those are based off of last year, as are these, but these include the 8th grade from last year which would be included, obviously kids move in and out of schools, but usually these are close.

https://educate.iowa.gov/pk-12/data/education-statistics

Go to PreK-12 Enrollments by Grade, Race and Gender, and they do break it into buildings.

So when you pull up those beds by school and it has all the numbers per grade are we using the 9, 10 and 11 grade numbers or the 8 ,9 and 10 grade numbers

The ones from my latest post are from grades 9,10,11 from this years BEDs the 24-25 school year. That would be the 10-12 for next year.

Have heard from a few people that most if not all the schools that were trying to get a waiver were rejected, sounds like Boone is sticking to the hard cap limit which would be a change. Does anyone know for sure who is jumping from 8 man to A and vice versa. The only one I know for sure was North Tama going down as that was in their board minutes months ago. Some talk of a few others moving but no facts to back them up.

I wonder if that is a reaction to some 8 man schools now pushing for a second 8 man class. I personally don't think that would fix anything, Remsen St. Mary's is one of the smallest if not the smallest schools playing football, so I'm not really sure what a second 8 man class accomplishes besides punish the small schools who want to play 11 man which overall is quite a few.

I think the state knows that they need enough schools to keep Class A alive, which to me is going to be more popular then 8 man.

So this is a list of questions that I think need to be answered, some we pretty much know but others we don't seem to know much about.

1. When will classifications, district and schedules be released? Furthermore, what is taking so long. I would assume that they will release the classifications first then about a week or two later districts then about a month later schedules, but honestly why don't we know anything. Other states get most of this done before Christmas.

2. What schools are combining together, and ending agreements? I think that we know Sigourney Keota, BH/RV will still be together. But there are others that I don't think we know for sure, like if River Valley is not with Kingsley Pierson who will they go with, because I don't think they can have a program by themselves? Are DSM Hoover and North going together? All of these things matter for those teams on the edge of a class.

3. What teams are going down to 8 man? The only one I think we know for sure is North Tama. There are a few others that have been rumored but I don't think we know for sure.

4. What teams are moving up to 11 man? I think we know BGM, but I don't know what has been confirmed, there is a rumor of Midland on twitter, and Woodbine is well above the cutoff, but this would be the only time they would be above the line.

5. How much will the state try to split up the best teams in each class? I don't know if this has been discussed but will the state try to split up teams that they view as the best in the class, the example I think of would be West Hancock and Saint Ansgar.

I hear ya. I check daily to see if there's been any updates on the IAHSAA website. Who knows what the holdup is, maybe there are some 8-man teams over the cutoff that are throwing the challenge flag cause they don't want to move up?

Class 1A had a couple loaded districts last cycle (1A-3 & 1A-4) and then a couple that were full of mediocre teams (1A-2 & 1A-7). Hope they try to split them up a bit more this cycle.

I would guess that is part of it, but at the end of the day the state should know all the numbers by now and their decision on whether to grant a waiver or not.

And that is what I was getting at, I also know that there are part of the state that sometimes aren't as good as others. The last 2 years in class 1A I would kind of say the best teams have been around Waterloo, in 2A in NW Iowa, in 3A around Cedar Rapids. Where as in 1A NW Iowa was weaker, and in 2A the eastern half of the state was way down.

2A was definitely stronger in western Iowa the last cycle, with 1A being stronger in the eastern half of the state. But all-in-all I do think the state did a good job of splitting teams up when it came to the playoffs and the rankings prevented teams like GC and DNH from meeting up before the championship game.

1. Classifications will be released at any moment. Schools were supposed to confirm their numbers last week. If history is any indication, there are always dozens of schools that don't get this done on time and need to be reminded several times. That is my guess on why we are waiting. Don't think it has anything to do with Boone. Now just need schools to confirm numbers.
2. Don't know anything about schools joining or disbanding other than what has been mentioned here previously
3. North Tama and North Union going 8 man. Heard that all who wanted to opt down and appealed were denied.
4. BGM. Others could/should move up but will take the one time waiver to keep them down. Schools can no longer have the waiver for 2 consecutive cycles.
5. I think they do their best at dividing up traditional or power programs but not always realistic due to geography. It would be best for all teams in the district to not have 2 top tier programs in the district as everyone gets pushed down. And...there will be at least some districts that are really weak.
