St. Ed's vs Ogden

I am guessing there is as much truth to the ruckus as to SE hiring a lawyer for a slander suit against greenvapor. You KNOW the backup qb took a lot of snaps last night. How many is a lot????

What an interesting thread.....first we learn that after always being a traditionally undersized team, someone actually has gotten considerably bigger. Then we hear stories of aggressive behavior happening among teammates at practice.

This is very, very interesting....

Gaels put together arguably their best performance of the year, working their game plan to near-perfection tonight to claim a share of their 2nd consecutive district title.

It was classic Coach Tighe football at its finest from the start. The Gaels defense deserves most of the credit for the job they did against one of the more explosive offenses by 1A standards, but the SE ground-and-pound game certainly proved effective tonight as they racked up, I believe, a season-high 496 yds on the ground.

SE only needed to attempt one pass on the night and had two open receivers but the throw was just a little strong. From the 2nd qtr on, the Gaels dominated the TOP, particularly in the 2nd half as they grinded out two time-consuming TD drives to thwart any potential comeback by Ogden.

The Bulldogs just never had a chance to establish anything offensively because the Gaels played keep-away about as good as you possibly can, while also finishing drives off with scores.

Both teams had a few big plays negated by penalties, which could've made a difference but in the end the Gaels were still able to make up for it, while Ogden could not.

Fans also got to see two of the best running backs in the class do what they do best. O'Tool racked up a career-high 277 yds and 5 TDs, while Austin Lentz showed several flashes of what he is capable of, highlighted by a late 70+ yd touchdown off a screen pass on 4th and 8 for Ogden's final score. I believe Lentz also finished with over 100 yds rushing, but many of those yds came on a couple big plays. SE did a nice job of containing him, for the most part. Lentz had all 3 Ogden touchdowns including two rushing TDs in the 1st half which were the first given up by the starting defensive unit for the Gaels.

Even with the lead, the Gaels couldn't afford to rest easy until the game was over because Ogden has a good quick-strike offense, even though they don't take many shots down field. Lentz is a great runner in the open field and even though most of Cayce Good's passes are within a 10-15 yd window at most, they have good receivers who can get yards after the catch so they can get down the field in a hurry if your defense doesn't tackle well. However, that's been a big plus for the Gaels defensively this year.

The other thing that was impressive to watch was how SE controlled the line of scrimmage despite facing a stacked box the entire night. Ogden typically lined up 8 guys within 2-3 yds of the LOS and all 11 were within a 7-yd box trying to stop the SE rushing attack and the Gaels simply overpowered them more often than not. I also have to give this team credit because they are one of the better downfield-blocking Gael teams I've seen in recent memory. Most all of these guys have been starters for a few years now so that experience is certainly paying off, but these guys do not let up until the whistle and are always looking to get to the second level for blocks to help spring the big runs.

With the win, the Gaels most likely have assured themselves home-field advantage through the first two rounds of the playoffs.

Very nice write up Thunder but I have got to ask.

As quickly as you got these stats together are you the guy who failed to get the playoff losses stats updated in Quickstats?

Will I get zapped by lightning bolts and nearly tossed off the top of a building temporarily serving as a gateway to another dimension if I say no?....

I noticed that Hindt #89 was in street clothes and didn't play. Anyone know why? He's a crucial player to lose going into playoffs. Not that they particularly needed him Friday night, but they will down the road. Also saw O'Tool got hurt late in the game. Hopefully it isn't anything serious, because it would sting a lot if their best player went down when SE was up by 30 in the 4th qtr and they didn't sub...

Hindt was out with a concussion to the best of my knowledge, and as for TJ, it was reported in the Messenger that it was just a cramp, so I assume he'll be back

Have cramps been an issue for SE this year or was this an isolated instance?

Thunder, I have always felt the truth will set you free. I would only expect those things (and possibly more) could potentially happen to you if you don't tell the truth.

Up 30 in the 4th and starters in, is that common?
It depends on who you're playing (like say Regina).

SE wasn't up 30 until 7:44 in the 4th, though they had burned a lot of time off the clock on that possession as well (I'm trying to remember if that series started late in the 3rd or early 4th and the Gaels put together a long scoring drive, or if there was one more in between). Ogden scored less than a minute later on the 4th and 8 catch and run by Lentz.

Like I said, SE's defense did a good job containing them for the majority of the game, but just as importantly was their ability to hold the ball on offense and chew up the clock, and obviously they'd do that better with their starters in the game.

Fwiw, some backups were in on SE's final drive that took nearly 4 minutes off the clock and left Ogden with about 2 minutes to try and score, which they almost did.

I have seen this "st eds not pulling their starters at the end of games" dilemma come up on a couple different threads now. Hawks127 is exactly right. St eds has 23 guys on their varsity roster that includes 2 freshies. They put their 5-10 guys in at the end that don't see action during the game. They still leave some starters in because they have to.

I sure hope there is some athletic ability in those freshman, us coaches of other sports are going to need them, along with the football team, down the road. I believe you are wrong. I KNOW there is athletic talent in that group!!!!!

after the success of last year, why such low numbers this year?
Although they made the finals last season it's not like they haven't been a good team in the years leading up to that. Those numbers are just status quo for SE football. Quik stats lists 33 kids on the full roster. 9 of those are freshman, 8 are juniors, 13 are seniors and only 3 are listed as sophomores. That sophomore class appears to be the ones holding the numbers down.

SE will probably be a decent team next season despite losing a good senior group. Returning O'Toole and some other decent athletes like Flattery will help. Eventually the poor participation numbers from that current sophomore class will probably hurt them. Hopefully for their sake, those current 9 freshman will remain out and produce some good players to balance that out.

I think they have good numbers at the middle school level should those kids stay out, and the 5th/6th grade groups seem pretty interested in football right now anyways so while these next two years may be on the low side, like you said, they should pick back up again eventually.
