Don't know much about them as a school. Do they have any tradition in any sport? Are they a recent consolidation? If they have been around, they just don't get much statewide attention say like a Regina, St. Eds, AP or an Emmetsburg; schools that are traditionally strong in many sports. Just wondering.

They are not a recent consolidation...

They had little to no tradition prior to 2007 or so... The common representative from NE Iowa was North Fayette... North Fayette consolidated with Valley, Elgin and thus they are larger than other teams in the area now.

South Winn made the State Title about 4-5 years ago in a 35-7 beat down by CB St. Albert when they had Jake Waters and company.

The schools is a combination of multiple small towns in the area with Calmar being the main town.

When I was in high school they had a decent Volleyball team, but NE Iowa is known for very good volleyball so they were still considered a mid tier team in that area... Tripoli, Sumner Fred, Dike New Hartford, Wapsie Valley, Janesville... Hailey Eckerman from Waterloo East is down at Texas and she was POTY...

AP and Emmetsburg are not particularly strong in anything outside of football and they have fallen off in that sport as well.

I would say South Winn is like most high school teams... They have had a decent run of athletes and put together a few good seasons.... Hageman has been the key name in the last few years. Andrea led them to the Title years back, Colton Hageman was a leading rushing during some 8/9/10 win type of seasons, and now Ryan Hageman along with Jordan Rommes are leading them offensively this season. The difference between this team and past teams is the OL and DL play is significantly better this year. In the past years they would lose games not because of offense but inability to stop any good teams on defense.

They also have a strong tradition in boys' cross country (minus) this year as I believe 9 of the last 11 the team was on the deck at state in the top three and won it several times. The past few years the girls XC team has been in on the action as well.

As for football since Coach Ohrt has come to town the team has been regularly seen in the postseason and has turned the program around significantly. He studies his opponents constantly, preps his players and has the respect of his players on and off the field all year long. Talent has continued to grow as the years have gone by.

being a SW alum from before some (most?) of you were born, that is a pretty good description Max. SW has experienced what a lot of rural school systems have experienced, wildly fluctuating class sizes (they were 3A at one time, believe it or not) and have since teetered at the cut line between 1A and 2A.

The only thing I would correct is the reference to "no football tradition prior to 2007" :) A million years ago when they were 3A, they had 3 consecutive undefeated seasons and did not get selected for the playoffs 2 of the 3 seasons because of points (because of conference alignments - the old Cedar Wapsie Conference - they played a number of 2A schools). The one year they did, they were beaten by Marion (gives you an idea of how long ago that was! :)

Baseball and Boys basketball have been to state on a couple of occasions in the past 10-15 years (baseball this year!), and wrestling has had representation quite regularly, but I think the Track and Cross Country programs have had the most consistent success recently.

South Winn has a great senior class led by Rommes and Hageman that have both played quite a bit since they were freshman and now as seniors they are very good.

I wouldn't say that South Winn is a traditional powerhouse in any sport, but they almost always field solid teams in almost every sport. They have had two very good coaches come into their district over the past 6-8 years in Jason Ohrt in football and Alex Smith (who has since left) in baseball, along with very good track/cross country coaches. Ohrt especially has changed the culture around that program, which was just a joke under the previous coaching staff.

I was a member of the 2003 SW football team, which qualified for state for the first time in 30 some years. We did not have a "joke coaching staff" but rather just a sh*t head coach. The support staff was pretty good actually (some of which are still members of Ohrt's staff).
2003 was good timing for our team to be good, because several of the district "powers" seemed to be down some (North Fayette, Dyersville Beckman, Starmont), not saying we would not have qualified had those teams been up. SW has had some very good athletes come through the school, but sadly some very poor coaches to accompany them. I think it would have been a different story of tradition had coach Ohrt arrived 15 years sooner :)
However you are correct, excluding 2003 Football, the tradition after the 80's and before Ohrt's arrival had not been very good outside of Track, Cross Country. Seems like the tide has changed now though.
Go Warriors!

Yep, that was poor wording on my part. I never meant that the entire coaching staff was bad, just that the HC created a bad culture/feel around the program that seemed to have an effect on the players. You're dead on though, there were some really good classes of athletes that didn't live up to their potential due to coaching.
