Looking at the class sizes, it looks as if Solon could be making the move back down to 2A next season. Anyone else see this happening? If so, are they an early state title favorite for 2016?

That would depend if they return the majority of their team. Looks like they had some close games this year against tough competition. If they return at least 50% of their starters then I would say that they could be a top 4 team.

Weird thread. Know a few parents from Solon and they thought would be a contender in 3A this year. But currently 4-4. Would maybe be a contender next year, and maybe not.

There has been talk the past few years around here of a new Iowa City high school to serve the North Liberty area. If it gets built, then Solon and CCA's enrollments will drop. Solon could be a 2A school, maybe even 1A. 2017 was supposedly the opening date for the new high school, but I haven't heard anything about it since May. Maybe the idea has been dropped?

They broke ground on the new high school in May 2015 and is set to open for the 2017-18 school year.

Pretty sure Solon's numbers will not be affected as much as you think. By my very limited knowledge of the area and completely blind guesswork I would say that Solon pulls at most 8-10 kids in a single class from the NL area (so 24-30 kids for 3 classes counted by BEDS). Also, I'm sure many will choose to open enroll their kids to Solon. 2A is a possibility. 1A...not a chance.

Anybody have better knowledge of this?

Solon will probably move down to 2A for a couple of cycles, no chance at 1A, they weren't even 1A before the population boom in the area, then in 4-6 years they will move back up to 3A when all of the young families that have been moving in have kids starting to get to high school.

Hawksince...since the OP referred to Solon being a "state title favorite" would say it does not refer to "most teams". About 8 teams are truly legitimately in the hunt for a state title, eh?

Yes they are automatically a favorite just for moving down. Because 2A is soooo much easier than 3A.

Signed,
Union LaPorte City
Clear Lake
New Hampton

The top 2A teams can compete in 3A (ask Solon\LCU\CL). With that said they have a good amount of talent returning for next year: Kendrick Harris (RB\LB\DB), Tyler Linderbaum (OL\DL), Blayze Griffis (QB\DB), Graeson Dall (RB\WR\DB\KR), Justin Gibbs (OL\DL), Trevor Nelson (LB\RB), Jacob Coons (TE\OL\LB), Bo Black (RB\LB).

Lastly, the chemistry should be much better with next years team as well. Which with watching the this years Hawkeyes vs last year, certainly holds water to being a better "team".

The competition level is pretty similar between 3A & 2A. Clear Lake had a loaded team coming back in 2014 and got bounced in the second round by a very physical Sioux Center team.

Not to mention Union bringing back much of their 3A title team a few years ago, moving to 2A and not even making the semifinals.

We are seeing Xavier dominate 3A after moving down from 4A. NOT!

Xavier has won the district both years (well a 3 way tie its first year) they have been in 3A and that probably won't end any time soon.

LCU lost to a Parker Hesse team - again a Top 2A can play and beat Top 3A. Heck, a Top 1A (Regina) can beat top 3A teams (and a lot of 4A teams).

Winning a district isn't the same as dominating the class. Many predicted these teams would rule the class after dropping down. That hasn't been the case.

Also, pretty sure that was Hesse's junior year and they lost the next game. Even his senior year they didn't win the title.

I think we are on the same page as far as 3A/2A. We both apparently understood. But many did not. And maybe still don't.
