It a battle of #4 Spirit Lake hosting #3 LeMars, it was pretty much everything we were hoping it would be.

After 1 - Spirit Lake 10 LeMars 9
After 2 - Spirit Lake 20 LeMars 19
After 3 - Spirit Lake 37 LeMars 36
Final - #4 Spirit Lake 62 #3 LeMars 53

Spirit Lake fans filled their gym for this game tonight. Despite the final margin, LeMars actually led by two and had the ball with about two minutes left in the game when Spirit Lake big man Ryan Kriener fouled out, giving LeMars hope for escaping with a victory. But over the next 20ish seconds of the game, LeMars's big man Tyler Borchers picked up two fouls, fouling him out as well. LeMars threw the ball away on two possessions then and Spirit Lake hit a couple shots to regain the lead. When LeMars decided to play the free throw game, Spirit Lake knocked them down to pull away late while LeMars's shots continued to bounce off the rim.

The worst part about the game was the officiating. Not that they screwed anyone over -- they were a fair kind of ridiculous for the most part. But Spirit Lake shot 31 free throws while LeMars shot 21 free throws. That is 52 free throws in 32 minutes of play. This prevented either team to get into any kind of true offensive rhythm. Though it made the game much more physical, which was fun to see.

It was an incredible, physical, ridiculously close game. Other than the last minute of the game because of free throws, it was generally a one or two possession game one way or the other. The rematch in LeMars should be incredible.

LeMars, Spirit Lake, and Western Christian are now all tied at the top of the Lakes Conference.

LeMars travels to Western Christian next Friday.
Spirit Lake hosts Western Christian on the 27th.
LeMars hosts Spirit Lake on February 10th.

Should be an exciting finish!

Dub. Wahlert 43, Dub. Senior 40 in an absolute war of a defensive game at Nora Gym in Dubuque. Senior led 31 to 15 in the early 3rd on a combination of stellar play by 6-10 UNI commit Luke McDonnell, and Wahlert not being able to buy a shot. Then the tide started to turn and Wahlert's defense limited Senior to only 12 second half points and the Eagles won on free throws at the end in a nail-biter of a game in which Senior led almost the entire time. Fairly typical drama for a Wahlert- Senior game. As far as the two D1 commits, McDonnell definitely played better in the first half and in the second half Pemsl and McDonnell were about even. Both had four fouls in the 4th quarter, and each sat for several minutes. I think there were more steals, shot blocks and dunk attempts than there were baskets in this game. Wahlert's full-court press brought them back, as the Rams became more tentative.

CR Kennedy 74, CR Jefferson 43
IC West 61, Marion Linn-Mar 56 (How good is Linn-Mar?)
Western Dubuque 73, West Delaware 64 (Haldeman fully recovered from illness)
Cascade 62, Bellevue 50
Clinton 64, Muscatine 54 (River Kings now have two beasts instead of one)

Dub. Hempstead 58, East Wat. 48 (Martell Wilson returns Saturday against Central Clinton after sitting out a month for the 8-1 Mustangs)

Fort Madison 68, Keokuk 57. Closer game than the score would indicate as it was close the majority of the game, although Fort Madison led most of the way. Miles Wentzien scored I think 29 with 15 coming in the first quarter alone and Jonny Dahl for Keokuk scored around 18. Short turnaround for the Chiefs as they play in another tough environment at Illini West (a good 2A team from IL) on their home floor tomorrow.

IC Regina went to Tipton and won big tonight 78-51. Stegner with 22 points and Cook with 26.
Sets up the big match up tomorrow night with undefeated Regina at 1 loss Monticello.

CMB 69, Nevada 55

Same as last night, they decided to get the ball inside to the bigs and let the good things happen instead of going 2-25 from 3 pt range.

Pleasant Valley beats Assumption 53-37 to go to 7-0 and leaders in the MAC.

It was tied 10-10 after 1.
7 point lead for PV at half.
8 point lead for PV after 3.
Assumption brought more ball pressure with about 5 minutes left which gave PV some openings and the lead slowly grew down the stretch.

Carius put up 20. He is an even better player than I thought. He can shoot, drive, and gets above the rim with ease. Does tend to get beat off the dribble a little to often.
Kardell is a shooter, but I wasn't impressed with much else.
Czarnecki is more of a shooter as well, but they tried to wear down Youngblut by posting him up in the last 2 quarters of the game when Milam was out.
Milam isn't a consistent shooter, but he is a banger. He needs some work on his post moves to become a legit college forward, but his size and strength are definitely ready.

A few game observations... The game was called pretty well for the most part.

However, Milam was throwing his elbow on post moves in the first quarter to clear out Youngblut and it wasn't called twice resulting in 2 buckets. Same ref in the second quarter called Youngblut for a foul on the arm when his hands were vertical. I watched after that and the short buzz cut ref called 8 fouls on Assumption and 1 on PV the whole game.

The 4th quarter Kardell hit Wadsager with an elbow to the mouth away from the ball and nothing was called. Czarnecki got chippy with Youngblut by shoving his elbow into his back.

2 times the game was stopped by the officials when Assumption had the ball. PV had 4 guys on the court and a 5th ran out from the bench. They didn't give them a technical. The next time PV had 6 on the court and they gave them the technical.

Not saying it would have made a difference because PV definitely was the better team, but it would have been a down to the wire game had the game been called fairly by all 3 refs instead of just 2.

Regina led most of the game, but Monticello came up big in the final two minutes to win 53-47, handing the Regals their first loss of the year.
