Q&A with Valley wide receiver Matthew Mahoney

What have you been doing as of late with off-season workouts?
“For off-season workouts, I have been lifting, doing speed training, and working with Flynn Heald, a wide receiver trainer here in the Des Moines area. I also played basketball and ran track. This past weekend my track team won its third consecutive boys 4A state championship. I ran in the distance medley and the 4x1. My 4x1 team won the state championship and set the all-time state meet record at 41.68 seconds.”

What do you feel you have improved on most since last football season?
“My speed and explosiveness have improved a great deal since last season. I am continuing to work on my route running along with catching the football.‬‬”

What are you trying to improve on before the football season begins?
“I am going to continue to work on my routes. I also have a goal of putting on 10 pounds before the season starts.‬‬”

How do you feel your team will do this football season?
“We are very talented team and I believe we have the ability to win the state championship.‬‬”

Who do you feel will be the toughest competition on your schedule?
“Dowling Catholic is the defending State Champion and there are a few teams throughout the state who will also be very good.‬‬”

Who is your opponent in the season opener and how do you feel about them overall?
“Southeast Polk is our opening game and they made it to the state semifinals last season.‬‬”

Do you want to play sports in college? If so, which one
“Yes, I want to play division one college football.‬”

What colleges have been recruiting you?
“I've been invited to a lot of camps and have been in contact with coaches from various levels.‬”

Have you made any college trips yet?
“Not yet, but I have a couple planned for this summer.‬”

Do you have plans for more trips soon?
“Yes, this summer.”

What camps are you planning to do this summer?
“I am going to SMU, Iowa State, Drake, Minnesota State, and a couple 7on7 tournaments.‬”

Did you have a favorite college growing up?
“I've always been a big Iowa State fan and now I cheer for Notre Dame because my brother plays there.‬”
