Luke McDonnell of Dubuque Senior

I've only seen Senior play a couple of times this year but Luke has been tremendous.
The biggest thing I have noticed is his growth in maturity.
Opponents used to be able to get under his skin in a hurry but he is doing a much better job of just playing basketball.
With Senior lacking offensive options this year, Luke is accumulating these stats being tripled teamed down low each game.

Not sure if Senior has the horses to keep it close tonight against Wahlert unless McDonnell has a 28/15 type of night.

Senior has Wahlert, Pleasant Valley, and IC West in their next three games. He will have a chance to show what he can do against some of the elite teams in the state over the next week and a half.

Well, McDonnell passed the Wahlert test, as he had 16 points, a bunch of rebounds, and played with poise and discipline (even managing a couple of smiles) in the face of unrelenting pressure from Wahlert's bigs, especially Cordell Pemsl who was trying to get "into his head." McDonnell is really long and quick, and I wonder if he isn't going to hit 6-11 in the next year. 6-8 junior Pemsl did better in the second half against senior McDonnell, but they both sat a long time on the bench with four fouls each. The Rams held Cordell 14 points below his season average, and Pemsl was obviously the one whose head was gotten into. Both are young teams and at one time there were nine juniors or younger on the court. If McDonnell's young teammates can step up a little more offensively, his team could be dangerous come tournament time. But this year 4A is loaded and nobody is going to make state without a lot of battle scars.

Those are very good numbers especially for a guy who plays so well at both ends of the floor. I've been able to see most of Senior's home games and am always impressed with the way this kid defends. His quick feet and length force opponents to adjust their half court offense. He directs traffic with his young team and does a great job witth help defense and switching. Even at 6-10, he is very capable of going toe to toe on a smaller guard on a switch.
Obviously, McDonnell is the go to guy on offense out of necessity. Opponents goal is to deny him from getting the ball, but when he does he faces double and triple teams. He seems to be a very unselfish player who gets as big of a thrill out of making a good psss to a teammate as he does scoring himself.
Luke McDonnell has a very good upside and will fit in well with Ben Jacobson teams at UNI. Mr basketball? Why not? Three in a row for the Panthers!!!

Luke played a solid game versus Wahlert.
His length caused all kinds of trouble for Pemsel and Carter
A questionable early 3rd foul took Luke out of the game in the 3rd quarter and Wahlert made a nice run with him on the bench for about 6 minutes. It went from a lead of 31-16 to 34-31 before he came back in.

Coach Eimers takes a lot of grief for NEVER playing zone. But, his insistence on man to man has really helped McDonnell's footwork. McDonnell played the 3/4 positions last year and was forced to learn to move his feet on the perimeter - which has only helped him this year guarding the post.

UNI is getting a good one if he can put on about 20-25 pounds.
