Madrid drops out and rightfully so. If you don't play defense and stop people you are not long for this world in football. Gave up 31 in second half to St. Eddys.

People will call BS when some, like me, say defense wins championships. Even if you do not agree you have agree that a team has to play defense much better than just average to advance in playoffs. Just like the fact any income can be out-spent - any high powered offense can be out-scored.

Until Madrid starts branding a defensive mindset and takes pride as a unit the season will be a disappointing one when all said and done.

^^What he said. Madrid is not a good team...they have a high-powered offense that usually compensates for their defensive shortcomings. Defense is an attitude...an attitude it seems this tiger team lacks. This team has been exposed for what they are.....

Saying that Madrid is not a good team pretty much disqualifies you as having a valid opinion. One subpar night against a underrated St. Ed's team does not make for a team that is not good. Madrid had an off night with turnovers and gave up two 50 plus yard run on plays that were pretty much stopped in the scrum and the the back squirted out. Madrid may be lacking the necessary killer instinct, but to say they are not a good team is just a joke.

Madrid's offense (well, RUSH offense) is potent. Santi had 280+ in a losing effort. Averaging 12 per tote. That's sick.

It would be interesting to hear some more input on this, having a 280 back average 12 a carry and still losing is difficult to grasp. Turnovers, big plays but still, losing?

Santi had 101 yds on his 2 TD runs and 99 total on Madrid's first two scoring drives in the 1st half. The rest was scattered throughout the contest. Santi is a speedy back and dangerous in the open field but SE did a good job for the most part of not letting his runs "really" hurt them. (On the scoreboard in particular)

And of course the turnovers forced by the Gaels were huge, especially in terms of momentum.

I should also add that Madrid failed on three of their four 2 pt conversion tries. (They don't kick PATs and rarely, if ever, try FGs)

Several things went into those runs:
-poor tackling by Madrid, obviously
-Gael runners not giving up and being tough to bring down themselves
-SE doing a good job of disguising who had the ball. On several of those plays I don't think all of those Madrid tacklers knew who had the ball until the back was shaking off of them. And you could tell they weren't all tackling with certainty.

Turnovers were a huge killer, plus there was a fumble on a pass attempt that got kick around - Madrid recovered but lost 27 yards. They run a ball control offense that can't really afford many mistakes. Having to go 107 yards instead of 80 is a huge deal. It is a great weapon to have Santi's ability to break one from anywhere, but at the end of the day the Wishbone is 5 yards and a cloud of dust. The score was 14-0 Madrid at the half and probably could have been 28-0. Mistakes were killers and let St Ed's back in the game. St Ed's is a much improved team and I will give them all the credit in the world for a monster second half. I totally agree that Madrid should have never lost that game, but that is why the games are played. 17 and 18 year old kids make mistakes, hopefully they learn from them going forward.
