What say you?

Pella 13-0
Heelan 12-1

Both have potent offenses, Pella has a dominant defense. If Pella can play that kind of defense against Heelan and keep Heelan honest with a pass now and then, Pella wins.

Offensively, Heelan attacks the edge very well with student body plays. Offensively, Pella is very dependent on their QB for play-making.
Defensively, Heelan crashed hard to create pressure, not as likely to be able to do that to Pella because QB has speed and agility. Defensively, Pella stopped the run and used pressure to thwart the pass.
Special teams, Heelan kicks it high and Pella kicks it into the end zone. Only saw Heelan punt once, Pella does a "pooch" kick thing.

I think the key factors are:
Defending the edge for both teams (Creston did not tackle well, Xavier did not take good angles). I'd expect that both teams have more difficulty getting big yards as compared to their semi-finals.
Passing effectively. Neither team had to pass effectively, but when they did Heelan had a better schema and better QB technique. Pella has a few big targets, and had nice execution on the hitch play.
Special teams will be important to field position. Pella is over the center and gets downfield while the punter holds the ball. Both could be infractions, but that is up to the referees. Pella has a dangerous returner that doesn't always go back. Heelan kicks the ball the highest I've seen.
Line play...I would guess this to be the most important factor. Pella has the plus of dominating Xavier in the first half, not so much in the second half (Oline). Heelan dominated Creston throughout. Can the big Heelan line deal with the more athletic Pella line? For example Pella has a smallish, fast NG who slants a lot. Heelan has a very large center and two beefy guards. I don't know who wins that battle, but if it is Pella than some Heelan plays will get dragged down from behind and if it is Heelan than they'll get some yards off tackle to the edge. Also, Heelan doesn't do much exposed passing for their QB, as did Xavier. The backside blitz might not be as effective for Pella.

Two very good teams. I pick Heelan, unless Pella plays turnover free.

Loco60 lots of good information here.

Question about the infractions on the punt??? you can line up on the center but can not hit them. Also why can't the punting team run down field??
Both teams are solid. Not sure what game you watched by saying Pella only dominated the first half against Xavier. I suppose the fact that Pella gave up 40 yards the 2nd half compared to the 18 they gave up the first must be the difference in dominating and not....

He might have been referring to the fact that Pella only scored seven points in the second half.

I did think Xavier did a better job of defense the 2nd half. They got off blocks a little better but also sent more bodies to create pressure and was fairly effective at blowing up several plays.

Those Heelan boys up front on (O-line especially) are very large fellows. Do you suppose Heelan will be able to control the trenches? The QB was not pressured too much against Creston and was very accurate. Pella will hope to rush his game I'm sure. Tobin looked ggod on perimeter time and time again.

There is no rule against running down the field on a punt, but if the ball is thrown there might be ineligible receivers down field. If the punter is contacted, it is the referees judgement on whether or not he was a runner or a punter.

The long snapper can't be charged until back in balance after the snap. The defender can line up anywhere, but cannot charge the long snapper until the long snapper is a blocker or otherwise done with his punt snapping.

In any case, it is something that is the business of the officials on the field, not the fan in the stands or chair by TV.

I know that Heelan had an offensive explosion against Creston, and it got pretty ugly. I didn't see the quarterfinal game so how did Carroll hold Heelan to negative yards rushing? I'm guessing that they couldn't get to the edge against Carroll? Is Carroll's D fast?

As I said before the semi game, Pella has given up some yards outside the tackles this year, but nobody has been able to run up the middle. The student body left and right plays may be effective. Heelan's QB made some very nice passes against Creston. Young man has a nice arm. If Pella allows him to stand there all day and pick his receivers, Heelan will do well. But, I'm guessing this will be the most pressure that the Heelan O has faced all year. Pella's suffocating line and linebackers make it very tough to have time to pass. I'm not sure what Xavier was trying to do out on the edge in pass protection as Argo was lining up at DE all night and just rushing the passer, sometimes untouched. The Xavier RB's couldn't block him. Pella blitzed some, but they got more than enough pressure with the lineman. Eventually QB's tend to get happy feet and then don't set their feet well to throw, even if they have time. Is a cumulative effect.

I'm also very interested to see how Heelan's D will attack Pella's offense. Xavier made some nice adjusments and did better the second half. It seem to take them awhile to adjust to the speed of Pella. You can blitz Clayberg, but if he gets outside the containment he will take it to the house. He's a great open field runner. Heelan has a big, strong defense. This should be a great matchup.

The year has shown that when playing Pella you have to survive the first half. By the time teams adjust (if they can) to Pella's speed, Pella already has a sizable advantage on the scoreboard. This seemed to happen to Xavier last week. Heelan and Pella will both be prepared very well and I look for a great game. Would be quite a feet for Pella to knock off Xavier and Heelan at the dome, but I think they will do it.

Loco from the few games i have seen where Pella has punted (which they do not do very often) Clayberg is not looking to throw the ball vs punting . But yes you would be right if he did that would not be legal.

fmclonefan I agree it will be a very good game by 2 teams that have a good balance between off, def and specials. Only been around 3A football since 2010 in Iowa but with the addition of Xavier and Assumption and Dub. Wahlert I am guessing no 3A team has ever had to beat 2 private schools on their way to the title. Would be quite the feat for sure for the Dutch.
Looking forward to a great game Thursday night. Might be the best of all Finals.

Regarding the Heelan v Carroll game. The playing conditions that night were brutal. Extremely cold evening with winds gusting to 50 mph. The conditions dictated a very defensive battle.

I'm guessing there are a lot of Pella people that hope so...

I just hope to see a good game.

Really 123? Is that the best you can do? Rooting against a bunch of 16-17 year olds? Seek help dude.

It looks like a "slobberknock" to me.

yup, that's what a slobberknock looks like, oh and 123 dude, no need to to seek help, you called it right - it was a slobberknock.

You can join him in the psyche ward. Did either of you attend & play sports at either school? Or have a kid/nephew/niece that did/does? If the answer is "no", then all you contribute to this little drama is rooting not for, but against a group of kids. Which makes you both losers.

We get it. You've got a butt-hurt hard-on for Heelan. But give it a rest already.

Yep...just like certain posters that post under another account to bring negative attention to a rival school. Now.....that's class.

As a matter of fact, I did, and your point is?

If your feelings are hurt by the word - "slobberknock", you're the one who has (in your own words) a butt-hurt hard-on - which incidently is not a very good example on your part for posting that kind of a comment - all because of a word - slobberknock.

Give it a rest, and keep it clean. We don't need that kind of talk on these boards.

All year Heelan posters have said this isn't a very good Heelan team by Heelan standards... I don't understand why there is so much attitude after the loss... shouldn't you just be proud they made the finals on a down year?...I'd love to see East make the Quarters on a good year. Difference between going through Spencer/Webster City/etc and going through West Des Moines/Des Moines suburbs I guess...

I think the Heelan supporters are unnecessarily defending themselves against the HATERS out there. The success of the program speaks for it's self. The hate comes from 1. Being a Private School 2. From the success they have had over the years. I think its true most thought after last years Championship they wouldn't be back. The QB from AZ and the Clark boys helped fill some needs and they got better as the season went on. Congrats to Pella they deserved it this year. But consistently bashing teams because they are successful is plain silly. This is HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL so congratulate the Winners and Losers and move on.

I think anyone would stick up for their team/school when others are saying that they hope they get Slobberknocked (aka piss pounded). Just a few clowns trying to stir the pot but ultimately sounding like idiots for bashing a bunch of kids just playing the game.

EHS, I don't think this years team met "Heelan Standards" as a performance aspect, mainly because of the O-line struggles throughout the season.. Penalties on false starts and holdings, bad snaps and not giving McCann time to hit his targets or opening up holes for Tobin all added to it.. I bet they averaged 6 or 7 penalties a game.
They did meet "Expectations" by getting to the title game and that's all that matters.

Here we go again! Another Heelan supporter that can't accept the fact they were soundly defeated in the championship game. PrideOrDie30 says anyone would stick up for their kids and in the next paragraph, he slams the Heelan kids because I guess 2nd place doesn't meet his "Heelan Standards. How pathetic you are!!!!!! Those Heelan boys gave it everything they had last Thursday night and that's what you give them in return!!! Unacceptable!!!!

Here we go again! Another Heelan hater that interprets everything wrong. What I said is called criticism which happens every day in football.. I cant point out what aspects of the game Heelan didn't excel at? Just like saying Pella had 5 turnovers and that was very uncharacteristic of them.. well Heelans O-line this year was uncharacteristic I thought. Read some of my other post, I know and admit that Heelan lost to a better team last week and both teams left everything on the field.
I guess here lies the difference in Heelan supporters and you.. we don't want to settle for 2nd best but we still have pride for our teams when they don't finish on top.

Must be a prayer term Fr. Craig failed to mention to us.

I think it is time to let this fizzle out!

I understand what is being communicated on both sides. It is an interesting thing for a team/community to have enjoyed so much success in the past that the glimmer of greatness today is always compared to teams of yesteryear. It is so natural to compare...even an earlier thread had several different posters regarding Pella now and former Pella players was engaged in the same thing: Who is/was better?

That past Heelan teams have faired well or been exceptional does not necessarily imply an insult to the Heelan team of this year and the level of accomplishment they and other Heelan teams enjoyed. For sure the glamour of "the first time experience" of being in the dome, winning it all, etc is so different for a program that has enjoyed a storied history. In listening to several Heelan players talk about their season, I felt a little sadness for them as they tried to explain/validate their experience this season while trying to shake the burden of comparisons/pressures that they felt, trying to measure up to last year's performance. That is a burden they should not have to carry.

Congratulations to Pella and Heelan! Thank you to all who enjoy this game so much. The things we share in common are and can be greater than our differences!

Still chuckle at the "PRIDE" on a Catholic schools jersey... was sitting at the game and overheard some non-private school fans asking if the Pope knew about it... they were laughing of course.
