Lots of great games tonight. I'll try to have scores and comments on three games. Davenport North hosts Dubuque Hempstead and these two rebuilding teams should stay close, with the Mustangs pulling it out. Dubuque Senior hosts Waterloo West, and that should be a very close game. West loses their stellar quarterback, and Senior's backfield is loaded with solid returning vets. Maybe a toss-up game, with Senior perhaps having an edge. I'll also cover (when I get back home) the 4A Western Dubuque Bobcats hosting 3A Wahlert. Wahlert has most of their 5-4 team back, but Western Dubuque (7-2 regular season last year) smashed them at Loras College, and this year, despite losses of key players, the Bobcats will feature a passing offense that will be difficult to defend, led by quarterback Baumhover. Bobcats probably favored.

Western Dubuque tops 3A Dub. Wahlert 12- 10 in a squeaker behind QB Quinn Baumhover's stellar passing game, which Wahlert had no answer for.

All the DBQ area schools (Hempstead, Senior, Wahlert and West DBQ) have results that leave you wondering.

Hempstead won, but Davenport North put 26 points on the board? These were not late points against the back-ups. It was 30 - 26 at end of the 3rd quarter. OK, is Davenport North that much better than last year? Hempstead's lines at practice look very similar to last year with plenty of size and strength. Watching them, they are clearly less athletic than last year at the skilled positions but thus far the practices have had better team chemistry which was a problem early on last season.

Senior gets handled by Waterloo West? Ok, this one surprises me less than the Davenport-Hempstead result as at east as Waterloo West is often pretty good for a game or season. But we are left wondering where is Senior? A few years back they really seemed like they had turned the corner after decades of less than stellar football.

I will comment on the West DBQ vs Wahlert game after some sleep.

CBAL lost 45-0 to Glenwood? I'll never understand why that program can never gain much traction considering the enrollment and facilities.
