FB Classifications

This Voucher system will be killer to rural 1A teams. The smaller private 1A teams in the city will be able to get the 2-3 athletes every year and pick who they want. You will see Don Bosco, Regina, St Alberts, Grandview, Etc just get even more dominant with this system.

So nothing really changes?

Athletic Directors have until 11:59pm on Monday, Feb 15th to confirm the BEDs number that was listed for them. After that classifications and districts will be released. Could be as early as next week sometime, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

My guess is that it will be in the 2 weeks between state wrestling and state boys basketball.

For those crying about vouchers or open enrollment maybe you should read the law before you worry yourself too much. Just saying

and if you need someone to translate it for your unintelligent @$$ let me know

Sounds like teams will find out their classifications (most probably already know) soon since the deadline to dispute or change anything was last night. Not sure if that means it'll be a full classification release or not. Then districts released first week of March.

Did they do anything with SES or free and reduced lunch, private school multiplier? Weird that it has not been in the news at all. Which makes me think it is a no go.

What’s their hurry?

I'm not sure I totally buy this. I mean, maybe, but ... I'm thinking there's some missing BEDS numbers in there (like is Cedar Rapids Metro High counted in with Wash, for instance?).

If it does turn out to be right, it's interesting, to say the least. Looking at the possible 4A layout, districts could be all over the place. It's pretty simple to find four or five schools fairly close together - it's that fifth and sixth one to fill out the districts that gets nuts.

You've got Mount Pleasant, Burlington, and Fort Madison on an island to the southeast - who joins them? Really only Clear Creek-Amana, Liberty, and North Scott make a lot of sense, but ... ? Do you split North Scott and Clinton? Do you split the three Cedar Rapids/Marion schools, and if not, what other three join them? What do you do with Decorah - Mason City, Waverly Shell Rock, Waterloo East, and Western Dubuque fit in pretty well, but who's the sixth?

Fascinating if those numbers are used, Dowling is about 100 students from being 4A, that’d be a treat. Assumption drops to 3A. In 5A, 8 of top 10 are DSM metro schools and about 200 students separates the bottom 16 schools but about 800 separates the top 16 (thanks to Valley).

I really wonder what the state will do with Newell Fonda, Iowa Valley, and New London. All three have been 8 man, but all three are more than 10 students above the cutoff, East Union and Grandview Christian are also above the number but within 5 kids.

I dont know what Newel Fonda has over on the assoc but they should have been playing 11 man last couple years but they keep pulling this waiver BS

They are at the same number I believe Sidney was last cycle and the state forced Sidney to play 11 man.

If the cutoff number stays at 120 the 8 man schools above that would be Newell Fonda (136), Iowa Valley(132), New London(132), Martensdale St. Mary's(126), East Union(125), and Grandview Christian(121)

The schools who have been playing 11 man that are below that are Belle Plaine (114), Ed-Co (109), North Tama (108), Gehlen (107), and Garrigan (98)

Of the schools listed here were their participation numbers last year (according to quikstats)

Newell Fonda 36
Iowa Valley 34
New London 27
Martensdale St Marys 34
East Union 33
Grandview 23
Belle Plaine 27
Ed-Co 39
North Tama 32
Gehlen 38
Garrigan 32

Never having played or watched 8 man, I would assume by the scores seen and field size, there’s a little difference to it vs 11 man. I would think schools who have the participation numbers would like the option to continue playing 11 man as long as they can but what do I know.

If the numbers the Gazette put are correct, and I will say I question CR Washington (because I think they may take in Metro High Students) and I question Dubuque Wahlert, this is what I came up with.

You're more ambitious than me putting all that work in! I will take a stab at the 3A Districts

District 1
SBL
Heelan
MOC/FV
BH/RV
Sioux Center
Algona (Could also switch for Humboldt)

District 2
Humboldt (Could switch for Algona)
Hampton Dumont
Charles City
Gilbert
Nevada
Ballard (North Polk could replace either Nevada or Ballard)

I could see some flipping around of teams in Districts 3, 4 and 5

District 3
Independence
West Delaware
CPU
Central DeWitt
Mt Vernon
Maquoketa

District 4
Keokuk
West Burlington ND
Fairfield
Washington
Solon
Assumption

District 5
Knoxville
Grinnell
South Tama
Benton
Vinton Shellsburg
North Polk (or Ballard or Nevada)

District 6 (this one I am most confident with)
Harlan
Carroll (I cant can see them sending them NW as that district would be TOUGH with Carroll in it)
Atlantic
Creston
ADM
Saydel

3A will be interesting as 13 of the 36 technically move up from 2A.
I see Carrol going North- That creates a nice district to the south and also allows Humboldt and Algona to stay together with CC, Hampton, Gilbert and then either Ballard or Nevadea

PNation that had to have taken some time! I'll take a shot at 1A.

I joke about the state having a rule separating Regina and West Branch, but in all honesty when you map out the schools there are 5 SE Iowa schools and you have to send either Pella Christian, Regina, or West Branch down there to play them, so it very well could happen again.

Southeast Valley fan here. I really hope they are not in w/Red Oak, Clarinda & Shen. That drive home is brutal. Midnite was early if you drove fast!!

There has to be discussion on how to do classifications with SES or Multipliers if it is taking this long to put this out. I have been patient, but how in the world does it take this long? It has been 10 days since the deadline was for enrollment. Look at the data, put classes down. It should be fairly easy and black and white.

Bump. Can you translate Round?
Nutshell you have to be in a low performing school to be able to open enroll to another public school or get a private school voucher. Right now, there aren’t that many high schools that would qualify (a dozen give or take statewide).

I haven’t checked the language lately but it has changed throughout the process. Last I knew there was a provision saying that if you were open enrolling under this reasoning (low school performance) you had to go to an adjacent district to your home district.

So the notion that there would be widespread changing of schools is an overreaction.

Possibly could be a draw. No clue about the other HC, I'm not sure what a twitter coach is, I think we should assume that people who are in education and especially those that dedicate their time to coaching are in it for the right reasons. Just my opinion though.

I agree that is a haul, but those 3 schools are on such an island it wouldn't surprise me to see it.

It could definitely happen even though that's like a 3 hr drive I think!! I sorta think Southeast Valley will go north and then put Des Moines Christian or Osceola to that Southwest Iowa district in 2A. Hopefully we find out soon so we don't have to guess anymore!!

The easier thing to do would be to invest in those failing schools and help them instead of making it worse.
