A couple surprises as they did move some teams around a bit. The big thing I see is they split up Sioux Center/Sheldon and Western. Sioux Center and Sheldon get a much easier district ducking Western, Unity, Rock Valley, and West Lyon. Their game will be the only tough one on the road to state for either team. District 4 is super weak and shouldn't have anyone who will challenge whoever wins the Sheldon-Sioux Center game. Meanwhile district 2 is very tough with 5 teams all in BCMoore's top 25. The winner of which will most likely take on a good Kuemper squad. A tough road for sure yet there is a real chance to get 2 NW Iowa teams to state instead of just having them battle it out in districts and substate.

District 8 seems to be much stronger than District 9. I'd like to see those two divided a bit more evenly.

Glad to see them renumber the districts and shuffle Sioux Center and Sheldon to the east. It will make for longer substate travel but it's well worth it giving the best teams a chance to make it to State rather than beating each other out and getting 50 point blowouts in Des Moines. Who in D2 gives Western a run? I think with the exception of Hinton, the other 4 teams have the ability to keep it close.

Amazed that they finally took some cues from the Girls Union & put more thought into district line-ups.

Although I'm glad SC and Sheldon got sent away, I agree that all but Hinton has a decent shot. Unity gave Western a run earlier. West Lyon, Rock Valley, and West Sioux are all packed with good athletes who just need to catch fire & could upset Western.

D1: Kuemper Catholic is probably favored.
I like Sheldon out of D3

I would've agreed with you until tonight when Rock Valley beat Sheldon by 14. SC has been on a little skid against some good competition. Western is rolling pretty good and playing a really tough non con. Late February is gonna be interesting around here.

District 13 is pretty tough. East Marshall probably the Favorite. It will be interesting if we could see a 3rd East Marshall and West Marshall game. Also don't sleep on South Hardin they have a talented team as well. I don't know much about PCM and Colfax Mingo other then they have a good record. Pella Christian is down this year.

District 8 seems to be much stronger than District 9. I'd like to see those two divided a bit more evenly.
District 8 has 2 teams w/ double-digit wins and only 3 with winning records:
Cascade - 16-0
Regina - 10-3
West Branch - 8-7

District 9 has 4 w/ double-digit wins:
NE - 14-1
Tipton - 12-5
Camanche - 11-4
Durant - 10-6

You can certainly argue that the teams have played stronger/weaker schedules, but it's pretty obvious the IAHSAA doesn't give a rip about that. All you have to do is look at Districts 10, 11, and 12 to realize that. Van Meter might as well book their hotel rooms in Des Moines now.

My guesses for state qualifiers are

Western Christian
Sheldon
AP (although Forest City, GHV, Osage and DNH are all quality teams)
Cascade
NE Goose Lake
Van Meter
East Marshall (or South Hamilton)
Treynor

Guessing Rock Valley and West Lyon's eyes lit up when the district assignments came out!
2 biggest obstacles from the Siouxland are taken care of.

Now only 1 giant (Western) to slay to get to the substate game!
(and its easily [possible this year)

I don't know about that. District 2 is much harder from top to bottom with solid Unity and West Sioux teams as well. Then district 4 is way, way easier than district 1. I think Sioux Center and Sheldon benefit from these districts much more than their conference rivals.

Also, I keep hearing people say how beatable Western is, yet no one has been able to beat them so far this season. Here they sit undefeated playing what is probably the hardest schedule of any of the 2A NW Iowa teams. I doubt anyone is real thrilled having to play them to get to state.

Agreed. Harmsen has done a masterful job at putting the pieces of this team together. I've probably been at half the games this year and every time out they seem to keep getting better. Really looking forward to seeing them play Madison SD on Saturday. I love shot clock games.
