Against nearly all odds, Heaven Chandler of Columbus is returning to defend her 2A Long Jump title by finishing 3rd at Tipton Friday night. Chandler had brought home 8 state medals and a pair of class 2A long Jump titles in her 3 trips to the state meet. Chandler fully expected to compete for a medal in at least 4 events in 2013.
Unfortunately, Chandler suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in her right knee late last summer playing basketball. During the resulting surgery, the doctor inadvertently cracked her kneecap which required several screws to be inserted and a longer rehab. After missing Volleyball, Basketball and most of the track season due to rehab trips to Iowa City, Chandler made her first practice jump the last week of April. With the screws yet to be removed, Friday evening at Tipton, Chandler was able to jump 16' 1" to qualify for her 4th trip to Des Moines in defense of her title.
