Still don't understand the computer's logic having 3 teams (one of which Solon beat) ahead of them. OH well, makes for conversation.

Best of luck to all - GO SPARTANS!!!

I'm guessing the computer can't get over the 0-38 loss to 1A Regina. Probably not helping that 7 of the 1A schools Regina faced and the only 2A school they faced all managed a closer score than Solon.

Not saying that Solon should be ranked lower but in a system which does nothing but compile scores and nothing more the above has to be hurting Solon's 3A ranking.

Mark you calendars. I'm going to congratulate the computer for picking Washington over Pella. Moore took heat last week for the computer ranking Washington over Pella when Pella had beaten Washington previously. Noone foresaw Washington's 28-0 dominance of the dutch last night but at least the computer picked the right winner. Washington just plain beat Pella at their own game. Not often someone out physicals Pella especially in Pella.

If u congratulate for that pick what about the pc picking decorah over solon and solon beating decorah at its own game?

Should be a great pair of semi final games.

By the end of the game Washington certainly had the upper hand. Pella squandered two touchdown opportunities in the first half and simply made more mistakes than Wash did, i.e. running into the punter on 4th & long punt. However, when opportunity knocks a team better be ready to open the door, and Pella didn't do that. In the end, credit Washington, what else can you say?

Moore's program is interesting. However, there is not a place to record foot fractures for your 4 yr starter LB. Yes, Nathan Clayberg played, and did very well early, but as game progressed, his injured foot left him less and less able to push off and move. When brother Noah suffered a dislocated elbow at the end of the first half.., it was 3 and out for the offense the remainder of the evening. This put tremendous pressure on Pella D and Wash took advantage.

Teams are simply not the same when key players get hurt.

Good Luck to the rest of the teams.

Agree Norse Horse. I don't think the computer knew Holt Johansen wasn't going to play for Decorah before picking them as the favorite over Solon as well. The Vikings leading rusher didn't get a carry in the game according to stats in the paper. The BC Moore numbers are pretty accurate but can't account for injuries.

Did it account for one of Solon's starting RB\SAM (#24 Wymer) being out as well?

Guessing not. Wymer 471 yards rushing on the year and 33 tackles on defense. Johansen 760 yards rushing and 53 tackles. Maybe it did. Johansen top rusher for Decorah and Wymer 3rd best rusher for Solon. I also doubt it accounted for Black being gone in the preseason BCMoore rankings for Monticello. I know, I know, lots to discuss there. Good luck to Solon in quarterfinals.

Who was the poster that said Nathan clayberg at 80 percent is better than most at 100 percent. Guess that is not true. Washington kept him out of the game with the blocking scheme. No doubt he is a stud but blowing about him at 80 percent is weird. A lot of good athletes in 3-A and Washington has plenty. Just love how people get so hyped about their team because of 1 player. It takes 11 on both sides of the field, and Washington had more than pella on that night. It really sucks to have 2 kids dr the same family get hurt but that's the playoffs!

I'm guessing, with responses like this and what "Band Gets to Play" continues to post, is that you're young. There have been many times in my life I've done and said things, that, from my now older perspective, I realize how foolish I was at that time.

My question for both of you: What good and honorable thing do you gain by discrediting young kids? Is "your point" so worthy that it requires a demeaning post to make it? Is there not grander things in this world to find to celebrate?

BFN: Posters rushed to the defense of Nathan Clayberg after "Band Gets To Play" comes on this site and elects to question his character and attitude and ability to "play hurt". How much is this young man being paid, that such an attack is warranted? To what point is YOUR statement above helpful? May I kindly say that you are both foolish in your chosen words, and you need to rethink your purposes. Even today "Band Gets To Play" posts another demeaning, mocking post -- even stooping to mock that Nathan's brother was injured in the game, too, so "take that".

Let me tell you more about the "bigger picture". Nathan was a 4-yr starter. He is 6'3, 235 pounds. He is a leader, in the best ways a coach/parent/teammate could hope for. He sings in the choir. He carries a 4.0 GPA. He performs with the Pella showchoir and loves it. He writes for the newspaper. He leads a bible-study with his peers. His ACT is only a few points from perfect. He currently has two little special needs "girl-friends" , both of whom believe, and have for years, that he will marry them some day. This is a great kid, and an important person, and from strictly a perspective of football -- a hard guy to replace as both a LB and a TE. Injuries are a part of the game. It is not an insult to acknowledge that the game changes with the loss/damage to key players. It is curious to note that info I read from Wash fans, regarding their first loss to Pella, was quick to point out Wash was missing a LB (suspension) and a had a minor dinged up RB.

Forgive the above resume, but here's my point: You're missing the humanity of the moment. Instead of demeaning, shouldn't we, as "adults" be defending the dignity of these young men? You've lost sight of things that really matter. There's no gain in "rubbing it in" is there?

In the first quarter of the Pella-Oskaloosa game, something happened to Nathan's foot. He played for two more quarters before he felt he must leave the game as the pain was getting too intense. It was discovered in the following days that he had suffered a fracture in a metatarsal bone in his foot. His family was advised that his playing days were finished. Can I confess to you that such news was devastating to hear? All the early morning lifting, the anticipation, the struggle for betterment....this young man, and his teammates....had invested EVERY good thing they could. No, life is NOT fair.

A boot was worn for 3 weeks. Special shoes were purchased. An orthotic insert was made. Hoping against hope he could contribute, Nathan took the field with his teammates, against a fine Washington team. For the first quarter, less so in the 2nd, Pella competed very well. Anybody at the game could tell you that with not too many changes, the game could have been a 2 touchdown lead for Pella. But that is not the way it worked out; nobody I know is advocating otherwise. Credit to Washington that Pella did not score. When Nathan's brother suffered a dislocated elbow in the first half, the battle became harder. Only 1 first down was earned the remainder of the night -- and Pella's defense stayed on the field. Nathan stayed on the field -- unable to "get to where he used to be able to go" and unable to push off/ his foot and fight through the double teams sealing him off. Fatigue from 4 weeks in a boot played a significant role. The team went down together.

No. You're right: I guess he was not as good as 100%. Still, I'd take him, and his brother, any day, and I'm proud of his effort. And I would say that even if I wasn't his father.

Very good post Norse Horse. Agree with you totally. Kids should only be commended on these message boards. Fans have to appreciate that they participate for us in the first place - and provide all these exciting games and moments for the fans and their community. And to us they are just exciting games and moments - but sadly many of them experience injuries and life doesn't move on as quickly for them as it does for us in just "getting over a loss". Here's a salute to all kids who played football this year, whether you were on an 11-0 team or 0-11. Thanks for providing so much entertainment on Friday nights and good luck in future endeavors.
