West Branch has a good non-district.Who's got the toughest non-district schedule? At a quick glance it would be hard to find tougher non-district schedule than Class 1A MFL MarMac and Dike New Hartford.
MFL Non-District
2A Crestwood (2022 2A Quarterfinalist)
2A Waukon (2022 2A District Champion)
2A New Hampton (2022 playoffs, top returning rusher in 2A)
Dike NH Non-District
1A Grundy Center (2022 A State Champion)
1A West Branch (2022 1A semifinalist)
2A Osage (2022 playoffs)
Ol Butch knew something when he submitted his list. Leaving behind some Easter eggs I think with these picks he sent in before his passing. In the past he hasn’t had this tough of non district I can remember.
RIP Butch I hope your intuitions are right. Going to be a fun year, and he will have the best seat in the house.
Who's got the toughest non-district schedule?
*Champ (10), Runner-Up (8), Semifinalist (6), Quarterfinalist (4), Round of 16 (2), Round of 32 (1)
*+/- 1 for each class difference
Where is this at?The list of all teams that was made public was very interesting in who put what teams on their lists. I noticed a few teams in each class that seemed to be on everyone's list and some teams that were on very few lists. You could tell who was looking for wins and who was looking to play tough games.
The state probably got tired of them always asking to play down a class.West Branch got zero teams in its top 5. It will now have to travel to Waterloo Columbus for the second consecutive season.
Well done, IHSAA. You done poked the Bear(s) !!!
Nobody put Central Lyon on their list.
Only 1 school put West Lyon (Sioux Center).
Only 1 school put Western Christian (BHRV).
You noticed who WB at #2 on their list, right? Evidently Mepo didn't want to keep the budding rivalry alive.West Branch has a good non-district.
Actually Williamsburg had WB on their list and North Linn, East Buchanan and Mediapolis all had Regina on their listNoticed nobody put West Branch on their list. West liberty was the only one to put Regina on their lists. Not sure Waterloo Columbus Catholic can be too pleased with their non conference. Their basically playing half of district 5
Grundy Center also matched East Buchanan at #2 on each others list but that one is not happening either and that was another 1A vs A that would have been a good one.A couple interesting things I noticed:
South Hamilton and Grundy Center each had one another 3rd on their priority list, yet the state gives South Hamilton West Marshall again? West Marshall and South Hamilton had each other 5th IIRC, so I found that a little ridiculous. (South Hamilton-Grundy Center would've been an absolute battle, I would've loved it)
Madrid and Ogden each had one another 2nd on their priority list and the series got booted. I know the state said that the volume of A-1A matchups was far too high to make it feasible but I think it's ridiculous to take away that intra-county rivalry.
