1A, 2A, 4A--Wed. March 6 Scores and Comments

Pick any regular season game and take a look, Hillmer with 10+ assists.
Pick any playoff game with more eyes on the game and he’s got half the assists, if that.

Are you implying that assists of the assistor are being credited? Who turns in stats during the season?

Looks like for the season, NL has scored over 50% less in the 4th quarter compared to the first. To those of us who have actually seen them play throughout the years, this is no surprise. I have seen games where Hilmer has 25 plus at half and then sits half the 3rd and all the 4th. But nevermind those facts, when the "pad the stats" jealousy gets going.

Can you give us a % of points scored by starters and the younger Hilmer? That might be an interesting stat when they win their games by such a large amount.

I've never understood the cynicism/bitterness towards North Linn. I'll admit that the "Co-Coach" situation is kind of bogus (it happens in other sports too by the way). As a coach, I'm not sure why every staff doesn't just name someone co-coach if they can collect two wins basically. But, be that as it is, Bob Hilmer is a legendary figure in Iowa Basketball and great guy. He's also a grandfather who wanted to be able to coach with his son and coach his grandkids. Mike Hilmer is a son who wanted his dad to be around for an awesome run with his grandkids. I don't begrudge them that at all.

As far as Jake is concerned, I have no idea why people get so worked up towards him. He plays incredibly hard, with passion, and competitively the entire time he's on the floor. I would assume every fan, coach, parent would hope their teams' kids would all play like this.

Yes, his stats are kind of cartoonish, and largely a result of the 1A league they play in; a league with 19 conference games (even though the Tri-Rivers sent three teams to State, it's a pretty weak league and NL just swamps those guys; to NL's credit, they did schedule Applington-Parkersburg and Cascade this year, though Cascade got snowed out). I understand some think they run up scores and whatnot; I have no personal knowledge or experience so I can't speak to that end of it. I would say that looking at Quikstats, the majority of their games are composed of two entirely different halves. I also don't begrudge any coach for playing his starters in at least the 3rd quarter of every game, for game conditioning if nothing else.

But, His numbers are legit. If you watch any film from their league games, every steal or rebound winds up in his hands on an outlet and he's off to the races. They score a TON of points and he's normally the guy that makes the scoring pass. Not many of those other guys create for themselves; they've evolved to be in the right position, run the right lanes, spot up, etc. to score off Jake. They've made 849 FG's this year and he's scored or assisted on over half of those. If you've seen their games, that's 100% legit. At the state tournament, his teammates have made 23 FG's, he's made 18, and he has 12 assists (these are State official stats), so he's scored or assisted on 30 of 41 baskets, which is actually a higher percentage than the regular season.

So, if you want to say the majority of their games are against much inferior competition, that's fine (though they've made 2 straight championship games now and 3 straight semis and only have 2 losses in the past 3 years, both close games at State). The numbers are the numbers though, and he's clearly the best player in the 2A field, and would play for any team down here.

As for going to Upper Iowa? So? He gets to play basketball and baseball on a free ride. He's had D-1 interest in basketball, especially as the year went on, but he committed early and that's where he's going.

That is strange I honestly believed those statistics were the greatest stat lines of all time even better than his last year unreal ( yes, unreal )stats.
Funny, missed more shots in 2 state games than he did all year. Had more turnovers in 1st state game than had all year too. Nevertheless, Roy Williams is getting a great one ... whoops I mean Upper Iowa coach.

You don't like the Hillmers or IAHSAA. We get it.

Here this will help you understand the BS this daddy/coach is trying to sell

I'll admit that the "Co-Coach" situation is kind of bogus

Insulting to all the long time coaches who actually coached and should anything resulting in this garbage not be recognized

Yes, his stats are kind of cartoonish

BS is a better description but hey even more creative than last year

majority of their games are against much inferior competition

Starmont, Albunett,Central City, Lisbon ( Portugal?) and Springville

He's had D-1 interest in basketball, especially as the year went on

Says who, you or daddy

but he committed early and that's where he's going.

hahahahaha ... broke Coach K's heart with that call. " Coach I remain committed to Upper Iowa"

Hey great kid, loves the game, obviously put in alot of hours. Nice little 1a/2a Iowa high school player just like the 1,000 others in the state and NL nice little town so good for them. But stop the BS, not necessary and no one that knows anything isn't buying the BS. Get over yourself dad, you are small time and comprimised your kids hard work to be a nice little D3 player.

So give me a police escort out like the last game you officiated in. Just kidding. Nothing against the kid, but daddy needed to stop with the BS. Really didn't do him any favors. And it's really insulting to players, coaches, etc state wide. Those are stats only a mother could love ... or believe. But hey, Upper Iowa got a nice little player. Drake, Iowa, and UNI have some really good players coming that played in the tourney.

You are a pathetic human being for getting this worked up and trashing people over high school basketball. I have zero ties to the NL area but by all accounts they're a great family and the kid is legit. And keep ripping him for going to Upper Iowa, very big of you

So, is this 2A game not on TV? It doesn't seem like NBC Sports Chicago is showing it?

He had 9 points in the 4th quarter but ended up with 20 due in large part to free throws at the end. Good game though overall. He's a volume guy who benefits from a style of play.
Numbers at state were more in line with other top players, as opposed to what was occurring during the regular season.
