Overview:

Midway through the season, people knew Ankeny was a decent team capable of
giving teams a fight. With their eventual run to the State tournament, the
Hawks changed that perception by knocking off some of the top teams in Iowa.
They may have eventually came up short to Linn-Mar in that first round game but
few picked Ankeny to make it into the State tournament. The team was hit
hard by graduation but returns one of the most talented guards in Nate Nygren.
They senior nearly averaged 15 points per game and will be better this winter.

The Pirates finished at .500 last year but lost two very talented players.
Both Dan Sherman and Daniel Possehl were
able to average over 14 points per game. Sherman is continuing his career
at Wartburg and could have a bright future. As for who is back, the team
does return three starters who put up a combined 25 points per contest.
The guard trio of Korey Johnson, Jaime McBurney, and Robby Morrison will be
tough to stop in any league. As for interior player, with only one player
taller than 6-foot-2, Alburnett may have some struggles with guarding in the
post.

Question Marks:

Overview:

When looking at the breakdown of this team, it is rather obvious that they were
inexperienced. Then freshmen Jack Bruns was second on the team in scoring
and is the top returning scorer this winter. He spent the summer playing
AAU basketball and that will only help him prepare for the rigors of conference
play. Look for this sophomore class to continue to make an impact this
year. A lot of these preps will be getting a chance to show off their
skills at the varsity level. That early experience could become very
beneficial two years from now.

Question Marks:

Rebounding and Inside Play

Overview:

With Tyler Sash returning, Oskaloosa may have what it takes to finally break
through and compete in the competitive Little Hawkeye conference. The
problem has been that they play a Class 3A schedule but then bump up to the
Class 4A playoffs. This is always a tough transition, even with a talented
player like Sash. Also if the team continue to have success on the
football field, players like Sash, Ryan VanDalen, and others will get a late
start on basketball. This could cause the Indians to start the new year
slow.

IowaPreps.com pre-pre-season Class 4A Basketball Rankings

The season does not start until November 15 but
that does not mean IowaPreps.com cannot look ahead. This year has all the
makings of another outstanding finish because of the amount of talented players
and athletes all across the State. IowaPreps.com looks ahead and has put
together out pre-pre-season Class 4A top ten. This list is subject to
change but is meant to get fans excited about the upcoming season.

1.) Iowa City West

Although the Trojans saw starter Michael Walker head to prep school, West
returns two All State caliber players in sophomore Jordan Stoermer and senior
Ali Farokhmanesh. Both have had big off-seasons on the AAU circuit and
that will show this winter. And with Coach Bergman back at the helm, look
for West to get after it defensively. The Trojans are always a tough team
to score on.

2.) Des Moines Hoover

The Huskies received some serious consideration for the number one spot but will
have to play up to their potential this season. Raymond Miller and
De'Anthony Zanders will be the leaders on this team. Zanders is a heady
point guard who can score points in a hurry. Miller may be the best
athlete in Iowa.

3.) Pleasant Valley

The Spartans fell repeatedly to the eventual State champions from Bettendorf.
But with most of that Bulldog team now graduated, look for Pleasant Valley to
take over in the MAC Conference. Brian Larson was named All State as a
junior. A host of other talented players return, include Brett Greenwood,
Matt Ryder, and others.

4.) Linn-Mar

With the consensus best player in Iowa returning, the Lions will be tough to
beat. But outside of Jason Bohannon and Jordan Printy, there are a lot of
question marks. Linn-Mar will have a tougher time this season but will be
a lot more fun to watch.

5.) Cedar Falls

With only one senior on the roster last year, Cedar Falls will be a tough team
to beat. The Tigers have State tournament experience but may have a late
start on the year. Many of the standout basketball players are playing for
the #3 ranked Cedar Falls football team.

6.) Bettendorf

Many expect the Bulldogs to have a down year after winning a State title, but
don't expect that to be the case. Bettendorf did lose a lot to graduation
but there are some very talented players waiting in the wings.

7.) Sioux City East

Roman Gentry and crew had a chance to experience playing at the State
tournament. But now the Black Raiders must replace All Stater Dan Bohall
to get back to Des Moines.

8.) Urbandale

Junior Ethan Freeman is heading into his third year as a starter for Urbandale
and is a very good athlete. Also returning are two solid seniors in Jake
Jacobs and Nevin Conlon.

9.) Cedar Rapids Kennedy

The Cougars were hampered last year by early injuries that saw them struggle
through the early part of the season. But with seniors Ben Lamaak and Ryan
Keel back, look for Kennedy to be tough if they can remain healthy.

10.) Johnston

This team will be somewhat inexperienced but with Iowa's top junior, Brent Barz,
on the roster, Johnston will be a tough team to beat. Also keep an eye on
senior Joel Quick.

Underwood

Defeated Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn in the first round (15-6)

Lost to Council Bluff St. Albert in the quarterfinals (14-45)

Thoughts on District 1 for 2005:

With the defending State champions in the district, many Class 1A experts
would normally know that this is will be a great race. But even with that
in-mind, St. Albert has a lot of holes to fill. They were hit hard by a
graduated senior class and on top of that, Coach Adam Kuhl will be elsewhere
this fall. Last year the Falcons were able to replace the graduated
seniors but this year will the well be dry? Time will obviously tell but
there were some sophomores who stepped in last fall and made an impact.
The team that gave St. Albert a run for their money in district play was
Underwood. The Eagles had an extremely stingy defensive attack and were
able to win one playoff game before falling to their district foe for the second
time in the season. Overall this entire district seemed senior dominated
so that means there are two playoff spots open to any team who can capitalize on
inexperience. Griswold will be hoping to do so with senior-to-be running
back Lucas Mosier. This first team
all district performer also made a name for himself during the track season.

Sleeper team:

Although they won the title last year, teams may sleep on St. Albert because of
the small amount of seniors that they have returning.

Sleeper Player:

Nolan Batten - This super sophomore quarterbacked the Falcons to a title last
year.

Thoughts on District 2 for 2005:

Early on this district ended up being a five team race as teams distanced
themselves from the pack. The two that made it to the postseason, Alta and
Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn, struggled in postseason games against District One.
But despite the setbacks, there was some great Class 1A football being played
here. M-M-C ended up finishing with three players earning All State honors
but will have some holes to fill as the season is just about to start. The
Eagles were able to finish district play with only one loss, which is quite an
accomplishment with some of the talented teams they had to face every week.
Alta may have had the same district record as Akron-Westfield but was left on
the outside looking in because of tie breakers. But the Westerners return
All State lineman T.J. Aube and quarterback Brad Payne. Both will be a
major factor for the success of Alta. Akron-Westfield will be hoping to
make it back to the playoffs and have a longer stay in the postseason. One
prep on this team to keep an eye on is wide receiver Dustin Carter. This
soon-to-be three-year starter has totaled over 900 receiving yards over the past
two years.

Sleeper team:

Alta - Returns one of the best linemen in Iowa.

Dustin Carter - Wide receiver is a great all around athlete. He also
rushed for over 200 yards last fall.

Lost to Gladbrook-Reinbeck in the first round (9-13)

Thoughts on District 3 for 2005:

When looking at the results in District three, no they are not a misprint.
Both Algona Garrigan and Saint Ansgar were able to dominate district play and
hold traditional power Aplington-Parkersburg out of the postseason. But
with a bad taste in their mouth all off-season, and sporting a loaded junior
class, the Falcons are ready to get back to their old ways this fall. Two
sophomores who have very bright futures ahead of themselves are Jesse Nitcher
and Colin Groeneveld. Nitcher was second on the team in rushing with 813
yards and Groeneveld led the team with 67 tackles. How often do you see
younger players dominate like that for head coach Ed Thomas? Both teams
that did make the playoffs last fall each lost three All State players and the
youth will need to step up. Lake Mills brings back All Stater linebacker
Justin Kester and will be hoping to improve on their 4-5 overall record from
last fall. And as for Belmond-Klemme, after moving down from Class 2A, the
Broncos struggles at times in and out of district play. And what about
North Butler? Despite some serious struggles getting to 2-7, wide receiver
Luke Brocka put up some monster numbers. He finished the year with 50
catches for 857 yards and 13 touchdowns.

Sleeper team:

Aplington-Parkersburg - Can they really be a sleeper team?

Turkey Valley

Lost to Algona Garrigan in the first round (16-8)

Thoughts on District 4 for 2005:

If you would have asked any at the end of the regular season which team out
of District four was primed for a long postseason run, the safe bet was on
Turkey Valley. They were undefeated and had done some serious damage to
the opposition during district play. But that didn't end up being the case
as the Trojans were upset in the first round and Gladbrook-Reinbeck went on an
amazing postseason run that saw them yards away from playing overtime in the
State title game. Who would have guessed (Not me after how I picked them
to finish last year. Side note, my picks for this district last year were
atrocious. I might as well apologize in-advance for this fall).
Anyways, this district has some serious talent returning and many of these teams
and players will want nothing more than a postseason berth. The Rebels of
Gladbrook-Reinbeck return a great deal of talent, including potential All State
running back Nick Peterson. Turkey Valley also returns their standout
running back in Nate Mracek. This senior-to-be will have the luxury of
running behind All State lineman Eric Schmitt. Denver returns future Drake
basketball player Keith Worner but sees quarterback Jake Kuennen move on to
college sports at Wartburg. One receiver that proved almost unstoppable
last year was Brad Theilen of Nashua-Plainfield. He put up some major
numbers during the fall. Dike-New Hartford always seems to sport a
competitive team and will be led by running back Michael Schreck. This
senior-to-be rushed for over 1,000 yards last fall and was named All State as a
kicker.

Sleeper team:

Dike-New Hartford - Always a good team who may surprise some people this fall.

Sleeper Player:

Brad Theilen - Does not get the respect that he should for the numbers he put
up.

Lost to West Branch in the first round (7-38)

Thoughts on District 5 for 2005:

What a strange year in this district last fall. Tipton came down from
Class 2A and started as high as #1 in some preseason polls. The Tigers
were expected to battle with Northeast Gooselake for a right to go to the
playoffs. And when they met, it was an outstanding game with the Rebels
pulling out a very close victory. But when play was finished in this
district, both teams fell short of the postseason while Clayton Ridge and
Starmont punched their ticket for the playoffs. The bad part was that both
teams lost in the postseason opener to teams from District 6. Each of the
four teams who fought for a playoff berth in this district lost a great deal of
talent in that senior class. Because so many teams lost players, this
district could once again be up for grabs. Starmont returns some very
solid players in All District selections David Trumblee and Nate Goedken but has
some major holes to fill. Tipton lost six All District players and could
be somewhat down. Returning for Clayton Ridge is linebacker Tyler Seeley.
This senior-to-be is undersized but makes up for it with his heart and work
ethic. Northeast Gooselake lost some talented seniors but will be bringing
back some very outstanding skilled players. Their biggest question marks
will be along the lines.

Sleeper team:

Northeast Gooselake - Can the Rebels be the surprise team this year?

Sleeper Player:

David Trumblee - This Starmont standout is a great athlete.

Defeated West Branch in the quarterfinals (23-7)

Lost to Gladbrook-Reinbeck in the semifinals (14-28)

Thoughts on District 6 for 2005:

Last year this district ended with three teams giving serious chase at the
postseason but Iowa City Regina was able to knock off Pekin late in the season
with a playoff berth on the line. This propelled the Regals and West
Branch in the postseason and both has solid showings. The Bears had went
undefeated in-district play but was not able to knock off Regina for the second
time this year. The Regals used that win to propel them to an eventual
final four finish before bowing out to the runner-up, Gladbrook-Reinbeck.
With their showing last year and the amount of players they will have back this
fall, Regina is ready to make another long postseason run. They will have
their hands full during district play, but if they can remain focused, the sky
is the limit. The team that lost to them in the playoffs, West Branch,
lost some quality seniors but returns some very talented players. All
State lineman David English is back as is junior-to-be quarterback Caleb Walter.
This duo will be crucial to the success of the Bears. Pekin may have lost
two All Staters but returns a very loaded junior class, headlined by All
District selections Justin Chambers and Matt Noel. Montezuma was a senior
dominated team that said goodbye to eight All District players from last year.

Belle Plaine - Not much is expected but four All District selections return

How
did District 7 do in the playoffs?

AGWSR

Defeated Interstate 35 in the first round (33-7)

Defeated Central Decatur in the quarterfinals (45-14)

Lost to Council Bluffs St. Albert in the semifinals (21-36)
West Marshall

Lost to Central Decatur in the first round (35-52)

Thoughts on District 7 for 2005:

Despite losing their opening district game to West Marshall, AGWSR did not
lose the rest of the season until falling to Council Bluffs St. Albert.
The Cougars really used the season to get better after that loss but will be
hoping to bring their A game early against district-foe West Marshall.
AGWSR returns two All Staters in Corey Viet and Ryley Schipper. Both are
outstanding athletes and really helped the team last season succeed. As
for West Marshall, the Trojans said goodbye to three All State players, two of
them being Cody and Cory Hackett. West Marshall does have a strong
football program and will need to rely on some younger, more inexperienced
players this fall. After winning the State title in 2003, Eldora-New
Providence came back down to Earth and struggled to a 4-5 season. Codie
Fetters has moved on and will be playing this fall as Northern Iowa for the
Panthers. Prairie Valley returns one very talented tight end in Shane
Allen. This third team All State selection will be even better this fall.
Overall, AGWSR looks like the obvious favorite to make the postseason but the
question is, who will be joining them?

Sleeper team:

Prairie Valley - The Warriors will be even better this year.

Sleeper Player:

Ryley Schipper - Teams focus on Viet but forget about this senior-to-be.

Defeated West Marshall in the first round (52-35)

Lost to AGWSR in the quarterfinals (49-18)

Thoughts on District 8 for 2005:

Like every district, District 8 sent two teams to the postseason. The
only bad thing about that was they were forced to face off against AGWSR at the
wrong time and both teams were beaten badly. Those Cougars did go on to
finish in the top four and lose to the eventual champions, but it was not a good
showing from these teams. Central Decatur was the team that made it the
farthest in the postseason and were led by an extremely potent passing attack.
The Cardinals will need to do a lot of reloading this fall because they were hit
hard by graduation. One returning player on this team who has a bright
future is junior-to-be Joe Audelhelm. He totaled nearly 600 receiving
yards and was a pain to stop. Interstate-35 also will need some younger
players stepping up because of the graduated seniors. Returning players to
keep an eye on include linebacker Eric Scrivner and wide receiver Justin Weeks.
This is another district that has two playoff spots completely up for grabs.

Sleeper team:

Interstate-35 - Although they had a good showing in district play last year, who
is expecting much from them?

Sleeper Player:

Joe Audelhelm - Underrated athlete that was overlooked last year.

Nate David makes verbal commitment

After a summer full of basketball, Dubuque
Hempstead forward Nate David had a chance to showcase his skills all across the
country in-front of college coaches. This senior took a visit in early
September and has since made a verbal commitment. Where is David headed?
Find out in this premium article! IowaPreps.com caught up with Dubuque
Hempstead head basketball coach Eric Miller and talked to him about David's
decision, what schools he was considering, and much more.

245115.gif
What are his strengths?

"Obviously he is skilled at 6-foot-7. He is not a true back to the basket
kid but his shooting touch, ball handling, and height are what made him
marketable to other schools. A lot of the schools that did recruit him
played a four out, one in. They have one true post player and then a power
forward who can shoot it and handle it. That is the system that South
Dakota runs. The biggest attribute in his game is his versatility.
Last year he blocked 65 shots and broke the school record. He was the
leading shot blocker and rebounder in the Valley. He finished the year
outrebounding (Nate) Garner by over one rebound per game. If you put a
true post on him who doesn't move their feet well, Nate can make it really
difficult on you because he can go by you. If he has a height advantage,
he is good around the bucket. He can back you down and hit the short
jumper in the paint. A lot has to do with him being 6-foot-7 and having a
7-foot wing span. He is not a great jumper but he is just so versatile.
He led the league in blocked shots, rebounds, three point percentage, and was
fourth in scoring and sixth in field goal percentage. Our team struggled
last year and we lost a lot of close games. I think if we would have won
five or six more games last year, he could have gotten votes for player of the
year. I'm not sure if he'll be able to do it again because I hope we will
be more balanced. If he is putting up those numbers, our team is probably
struggling."

What areas does he need to continue on?

"Strength because everyone knows that there is a big difference between high
school and college, especially at the power forward spot. He is up to 205
pounds and is getting stronger but is still a tall, skinny kid. This year
he has to maintain and hit the weights hard after the season. If he can
get up to 215 pounds, South Dakota has been saying they really want him to play
next year. I would love to see him also work on his feet. There are
going to be some nights when he is outside and he'll really have to guard.
Nate has gotten by guarding the other team's post player and your lateral
movement is limited in that. He is going to have to sit down and spread
out when guarding someone."

When did he officially decide on South Dakota?

"He called them about ten days ago and verbally committed. We're not going
to do any press stuff until he signs in November. He took his visit in the
first weekend of September and they offered then. They told him that he
has a great shot to play as a freshman and they want him to shoot 100 three
pointers each year starting as a freshman. Nate and his family really like
the staff, especially assistant coach Joey James. When they visited, it
was a good fit. South Dakota is supposed to be ranked in the preseason
poll somewhere around seven or eight in the country. You are talking about
the top of the heap for Division II schools. He did still have five or six
Division I schools telling him they were going to watch him this season.
His worry was that if he did that, would he have to sit for two years? He
took a visit and found a good fit. After he came home, he thought about it
for a week or two and took them up on it. I think they're happy on both
ends."

What other schools was he considering?

"At the Division II level, Lewis was in the picture but South Dakota won him
over. For Division I schools, Wolford, Florida Atlantic, Western Carolina,
and Illinois State were recruiting him. Illinois State had somewhat backed
off but those were the main four. He took an unofficial visit to Drake in
the spring and
I thought he'd be a great fit for that system. But he made the visit to
South Dakota and
liked it. You can't complain about four years of free education.
He'll be the first kid out of Dubuque to sign a full four year ride in a long
time. We haven't had one at Hempstead since PJ Hogan in 1995."

How did District 1 do in the playoffs?

Northeast Hamilton

Lost to Twin River Valley Bode in the quarterfinals (37-40, 3OT)

Thoughts on District 1 for 2005:

Northeast Hamilton dominated district play and last year and ended up
winning the thing by two games. And although they lost a thrilling game in
the opening round of the playoffs, the Trojans had three seniors named All
State. Each one will be gone now, which includes a lineman, a linebacker,
and a wide receiver. The Trojans still have proven that they can win and
has enough returning experience to make a run at another district title.
Look for junior-to-be quarterback Alex Renaud to have an even better year.
As for the teams trying to get into the playoff race next year, three were tied
at 3-2 in-district play. C-W-L, Nora Springs-Rock Falls, and Ventura will
be hoping to make the leap to the top of district play. C-W-L also returns
their starting quarterback in Ben DeGroote. This talented dual-threat
quarterback is a tough prep to stop. Nora Springs-Rock Falls will have to
replace All State running back Mark Meehan but on the defensive side of things,
Justin Heimer returns at linebacker. Ventura had one of the best
linebacker crews in 8-man last year but does return senior-to-be Josh Brager.

Sleeper team:

Nora Springs-Rock
Falls - They finished last year with seven wins.

Sleeper Player:

Alex Renaud - Helped team to district title as a sophomore.

Josh Brager - Ventura standout is a load on both sides of the ball.

How
did District 2 do in the playoffs?

Twin River Valley, Bode

Defeated Northeast Hamilton in the quarterfinals (40-37, 3OT)

Lost to St. Mary's Remsen in the semifinals (14-42)

Thoughts on District 2 for 2005:

Similar to District 1, the top team in this district ended up dominating and
won by two games. Twin River Valley, Bode had a very impressive season but
said goodbye to two All State players. The team does return kicker/running
back Mark Cirks. But with the team losing their starting quarterback and
leading receiver, it may be tougher for the Thunder to open up the running game.
Sentral-Fenton has one of the most dominant traditions in 8-man football.
But after a down year, the big question is can they rebound? All State
lineman Ryan Luedtke returns as well as a good deal of their running backs from
last fall. North Kossuth brings back leading running back Joe Johnson and
a lot of talent around him. Pomeroy-Palmer has a chance to improve on
their two district wins from last year with quarterback David Erickson and
running back Craig Juilfs returning. This really is going to be a great
district and could really go a lot of different ways.

Sleeper team:

Pomeroy-Palmer - Can this basketball school have football success?

Defeated Adair-Casey in the State championship (56-8)

Thoughts on District 3 for 2005:

District 3 hosted the eventual 8-man State champions in St. Mary's Remsen.
But even though they won the title last year, they are no lock to get back into
the postseason. Not only did they lose their top lineman to UNI, the Hawks
also graduated their leading running back, quarterback, wide receiver, and more.
So where does that leave the team? Missing six All Staters and having a
lot of question marks heading into the fall. Aurelia only lost one game on
the year and that cost them a chance to play in the postseason. They also
were hit hard by graduation but the Bulldogs return a strong number of talented
players. This whole district has some question marks with the talent
graduated so things are up for grabs.

Sleeper team:

St. Mary's Remsen - They might have won the State title but many are sleeping on
them this fall.

Thoughts on District 4 for 2005:

Glidden-Ralston dominated district play and gave the eventual champions a
very good game in the opening round. And despite the fact that they lose a
lot of All State players and seniors, this will still be the team to be in
district play. Returning for the team is a very talented All Stater in
linebacker T.J. Lensch. This senior was a load on both sides of the ball
and will be even better this fall. Also keep an eye on quarterback Nick
Lensch. This junior had a very solid season last fall. Elk-Horn
Kimballbon tasted success last year and will be hoping to repeat it this fall.
They will have quite the test with a number of other district teams.
Ar-We-Va lost two very talented players in athlete Teddy Hawley and lineman
Ricky Lueders. Outside of the Glidden-Ralston, this district could end up
wide open.

Sleeper team:

Ar-We-Va - They return some solid players from last year and will be looking for

Thoughts on District 5 for 2005:

After dominating the regular season, many expected Walnut to play in the
State title game. And although they ended up falling short of that goal,
the Warriors still had quite the season. Walnut said goodbye to five All
State players, including current Iowa Hawkeye Tyler Blum. Malvern gave
Walnut their toughest test in-district play but that lost cost them a postseason
appearance. The Panthers will have some holes to fill as five All State
players are not graduated as well. With those two teams having a lot of
holes to fill, I feel the team to beat is Stanton. Quarterback Drew
Whigham earned first team All State honors as a junior and his numbers will only
get better this fall. In eight games last year, this senior threw 24
touchdowns and only three inteceptions. The second leading pass catcher,
Ryan Meier, returns and will give Whigham a great target. Nishna Valley
returns a very talented running back in Austin Duysen. This junior will
likely break the 1,000 yard barrier this fall.

Stanton - They have some serious talent returning.

Thoughts on District 6 for 2005:

Farragut gave Walnut a very tough test in the first round of the playoffs
but is now without a lot of their firepower. Gone are two All State
defenders and the offense was also hurt by graduation. All District wide
receiver Luk Miller does return. Hamburg brings back a very talented
running back in Ryan Haupt. This All Stater rushed for over 1,300 yards
last fall and was also dangerous as a pass catcher. Also keep an eye on
lineman Clay Hendrickson. One team who has a chance to be good is Essex.
They return their leading rusher in Adam Maher. Maher also snagged six
interceptions. And don't forget about Cliff Holmes, who led the team with
seven interceptions. Another Essex player primed for a huge year is Tom
Slater. He may be undersized but put up some huge numbers defensively.
I see these three teams fighting for the district title in the end.

Defeated Walnut in the semifinals (42-29)

Lost to St. Mary's Remsen in the State championship (8-56)

Thoughts on District 7 for 2005:

Another potential three team battle may happen in District 7 this fall.
Adair-Casey has the most dominant tradition in 8-man football and will be hoping
to make another State title run. But gone are four All Staters from a team
that made it all the way to the State title game. Gone from the Bombers
are their quarterback, three leading running backs, and leading receiver.
Defensive back Andrew Leeper does return and he snagged five interceptions last
year as a sophomore. The only loss for Lenox last season was to the
Bombers. All State athlete Jake Samo returns and is a presence on both
sides of the ball. The Tigers also return a very talented running back in
sophomore Kalab Evans. Lamoni said goodbye to All Stater Chris Seymour but
has some quality returning. That includes All District lineman Zach Kotz
and some very underrated athletes. Murray lost their top
running back from last year but brings athlete Patrick Flaherty, who was a load
to block.

Sleeper team:

Lamoni - They have some underrated talent returning but will need to avenge both

Twin Cedar and Melcher-Dallas fought for the district title last year and
that could be the case again this fall. The biggest hole that Twin Cedar
will have to replace is athlete Scott Schippers. Also gone are two other
All Staters. Melcher-Dallas returns All State linebacker Jesse Clark but
will have to replace quarterback B.J. Wells. Players returning that will
help include running back Willy Westberry, receiver Jordy Tickle, and linebacker
Jimmy Lane. With the talent they return, the Saints will be tough to beat.
One of the best linebackers gone this year is Casey Warren of Seymour.

Thoughts on District 1 for 2005:

When looking back at how this district finished last fall, it is obvious
that this really was a two-team race. Central Lyon was able to finish
district played undefeated but West Lyon extracted some revenge on them in the
playoffs. This really was one of the best rivalries to watch in district
play and made things very interesting all year. Although Central Lyon lost
a lot on the offensive side of the ball, they return five All District defensive
players to a unit that was tough to score on last year. These five
returning include Joey Kruger, Chad Lenz, Nate Van Briesen, Jaren Wiersma, and
Tim Kruse. Central Lyon will have to replace the bulk of their offensive
attack and that will be interesting to watch early on. West Lyon on the
other hand lost eight All District players to graduation and will have a lot of
players to replace. But with their tradition and ability to reload, look
for them to make things interesting in this district. Outside of those two
teams, Rock Valley/Boyden Hull will be hoping to make the jump up to serious
playoff contender. A number of other teams lost a lot of talented seniors
and will have a lot of ground to make up.

the team to beat. But after winning two straight State titles, they were
finally beaten in district play thanks to Cherokee and eventually fell in the
quarterfinals of the playoffs. But with all the talented seniors they had
lost the year before, it is amazing they were as good as they were last fall.
Gone from the E-Hawks are three All State players in Will McCann, Joe Noonan,
and Max Osborn. This trio played a major role in their success and will
really be missed. But like most Emmetsburg teams, look for this squad to
reload with talented younger players. The tradition that this team has is
among the top five in Iowa. Cherokee was the only team to beat Emmetsburg
in the regular season but saw their postseason hopes dashed when veteran
quarterback Korey Stephens went down with an injury for the season. So
instead of Cherokee, Fort Dodge St. Edmond raised their level of play and earned
a hard fought spot into the playoffs. Will these three teams be fighting
for the district title or will H-M-S have anything to say about it?

Sleeper team:

Cherokee - This pass-first offense is always tough to stop.

Sleeper Player:

Grant Hegsted - H-M-S linebacker who is overlooked.

Thoughts on District 3 for 2005:

If you want a blueprint on how you can finish 4-3 in district play and win
the State title, just take a long look at what Waterloo Columbus did last year.
After some serious struggles during district play, the Sailors brought their A
game into the postseason and dominated the postseason. Who would have
thought they had what it takes to get in with some luck and use their passing
attack all the way to the Dome. But with the title now behind them,
Columbus said goodbye to three All State players, which included some vital
parts of the offensive attack. There will be some holes that will need to
be filled and what they did last fall will take a lot to repeat. The team
that dominated the district during the regular season was North Fayette.
They went undefeated on the season until every bounce went against them at the
Dome against Waterloo Columbus. But despite the struggles, this team
really accomplished a lot and will be among the top returning teams in Class 2A.
Leading the charge is All State running back Mike Moser. This junior-to-be
is very hard nosed and just gets the job done on the football field. The
team that slipped that to let Columbus into the playoffs was Union-LaPorte City.
Look for this team to have a much different look as Matt Pipho, who was named
the Class 3A Player of the Year, will be working hard at the University of
Miami.

Sleeper team:

Sumner-Fredricksburg - Will they finally put things together?

Sleeper Player:

Chris Snyder - This big man is dominant on the line for Garner-Hayfield

Center Point-Urbana

Thoughts on District 4 for 2005:

After finishing just yards away from a State title, there was a lot of
pressure on the shoulders of Solon to get back to the Dome. But things
didn't go their way in a loss to Center Point-Urbana that saw the Spartans miss
out on the playoffs. Gone from that team is All State lineman Chris Mensen,
who signed a Letter of Intent to play college football at Minnesota. But
back for Solon is standout running back Clint Donovan. This senior-to-be
was the second leading rusher in this district and will be even better this
fall. As for the leading rusher in this district, Robbie Mohr of Maquoketa
Valley, he is now gone to the college ranks. His athleticism on all parts
of the field will be missed by the Wildcats as will the two other All Staters
lost to graduation. This team was a major surprise last year but will have
a target on their back after winning the district. One player that is
returning for the team is Donny Nordmann, who recorded four interceptions in
district play. The other playoff team, Center Point-Urbana, won the games
they really had to against Solon and that was enough to help them into the
postseason. They have some holes to fill but are underrated.

Sleeper team:

Dyersville Beckman - They may have struggled last year but they really gave some
good teams a run

Clint Donovan - He is very overlooked on both sides of the ball.

Thoughts on District 5 for 2005:

This district ended up being a three team race as Mid-Prairie was able to
take home the district title but will have a lot of pieces to replace.
Coming back for the Golden Hawks is All State defensive Josh Berry. This
standout athlete had a very impressive junior season but will have to do a lot
more on both sides of the ball. In-order for this team to succeed, a
number of younger players will have to step up to replace Jordan Montgomery,
Travis Kern, Ben Rousch, and many others. The Beavers of Wilton were able
to give Mid-Prairie the biggest scare last year but also saw two All Staters
move on to college. Their entire senior class was loaded with athletes who
succeeded in multiple sports and football was no exception. West Liberty
was another team who has some question marks after seeing a talented class of
players move on. Jake Meyers was one of the most underrated players in
Class 2A and will be missed. When looking at this district for 2005, there
are so many teams that could easily turn around their record and take home the
district title. All three of the top teams lost a lot of players and that
opens the door for Durant, Mediapolis, and every other team in the district.

Sleeper team:

Durant - Can their talented senior class make some noise on the football field?

Josh Berry - This All Stater really has not received that much pub.

Thoughts on District
6 for 2005:

When a team that went undefeated during the regular season returns 20 of 22
starters, there is a good chance that they will remain the favorite in their
district play. That is the exact case as Sigourney-Keota is not only the
favorite in this district but also the favorite in Class 2A. And if not
for an impressive passing attack by Waterloo Columbus, the Savage Cobras may
have added another State title to their resume. Leading the way the
offensive attack this season is running back Jon McLaughlin and quarterback Kyle
Bermel. Both made a name for themselves over the past few years and are
among the best in Iowa. Along the offensive line is two returning All
Staters in Tyler Sheets and Brandon Berg. Overall this team is just loaded
with talented players. It really would be a surprise if they get beat in
district play because they are the obvious team to beat. But another team
out of this district will have to make the playoffs and the big question is who?
West Burlington was strong last year but will be missing All State running back
David Wall. Also gone are All Staters Collin Ramsdell and John Howard.
Albia had a solid showing in-district play and return one of the most talented
linemen in Iowa in Patrick Steinbach. This man among boys at the high
school level has the size to play major Division I football and has been
receiving some serious looks from the in-state college programs.

Sleeper team:

Albia - It will be tough to surpass Sigourney-Keota but they may have what it
takes to earn a playoff berth.

Kyle Bermel - This All State QB does not get the recognition he deserves

BRIANSCHMIDT1150.JPG
Thoughts on District
7 for 2005:

With the football tradition that Roland Story has, it is no wonder that they
finished last year undefeated in district play and finished two games ahead of
the competition. But that competition came back and haunted Norsemen in
the first round of the postseason. They were upset by district foe
Gilbert, who they had defeated earlier in the regular season. That win
helped propel Gilbert to what was a very impressive turn around. After
finishing the 2003 season 1-8 overall, the Tigers went 5-2 in district play and
ended up playing for a State title. What gave them confidence for that
long run was their postseason win over Roland Story. Gilbert returns a
load of talent, which includes All State running back Brian Schmidt. This
senior-to-be is one of three All State players returning to the Tiger lineup
(Others include lineman Brady Clary and kicker Alex Bowers). Roland Story
will obviously have revenge on their mind when they get another chance at
Gilbert but these three All Staters may be too much in the long run.
Grundy Center lost out on the postseason to Gilbert based on points but they
have linebacker Tom McKendree returning. This senior-to-be was named All
State last fall and will only be better this year. Time will tell who can
make it to the postseason out of this district and there will be some major
battles with some of these games.

Sleeper team:

Grundy Center - Points away from sending Gilbert home from the playoffs.

Sleeper Player:

Tom McKendree - Although he only earned third team All State honors, he is very
talented.

Thoughts on District
8 for 2005:

Although Clarinda had a lot of promise heading into the postseason, they
were unable to get back to the Dome. Gone from that team are a number of
All Staters, including Billy March and Scott Snook. But even with those
players gone, the Cardinals return a very strong linebacker core in Seth
Humphrey and Troy Snook. It will be very tough for this team to remain on
top of the district because of Red Oak and Kuemper Catholic. Red Oak
returns one of the best players in Iowa with running back/linebacker Andy
Jennings. This All Stater has been hampered this summer with a hamstring
injury but if he returns to 100%, he will likely be the best player in this
district. Jennings will be hoping to help Red Oak to their first
postseason berth ever. They nearly did it last year but with another year
of experience and the core returning, this will be the year for the Tigers.
The team expected to give Red Oak their toughest test is Kuemper Catholic.
They made a postseason appearance last year and return a bulk of All District
players. Some of the top players returning include quarterback Justin
Schultes, defensive back Jake Foley, kicker Michael Romey, defensive lineman
Richard Lawler, and many others. A number of other teams will be hoping to
bump up into contention but it will take some work in-district games.

Thoughts on District 1 for 2005:

Who would have known West Bend-Mallard would have dominated like they did in
2004? They were unstoppable in the postseason and their closest game was a
20-8 win. And in the final two games, they scored an impressive 79 points.
The Wolverines did lose some talent but have some very strong players returning.
Quarterback Jason Banwart returns as well as running back Brad Ruppert.
Both of these standouts were named first team All District last year.
Southeast Webster gave them their toughest challenge last year but lost six
first team All District players. However they do return a number of
younger standout players. Keep an eye out for lineman Scott Danielson,
kicker Jesse Smith, and linebacker Donavan Grove. Two teams that will be
hoping to turn things around this fall and really compete for a playoff spot are
Armstrong-Ringstead and Southern Cal. Armstrong will be bringing back a
very talented running back in senior-to-be Jake Petersen. Also watch out
for Joel Godfredsen and Grant Grabinoski. Southern Cal had to say goodbye
to a lot of senior starters but All District quarterback Gavin Crandall returns.
He is a very skilled athlete who is an impact player.

Thoughts on District 2 for 2005:

After finishing district play and the regular season undefeated, Riceville
had a very quick exit in the playoffs as they were upended by Elgin Valley,
13-10. Three All Staters are now gone off of that team, which includes
standout Grant Lilly. But despite the losses, this team will not be down
for long. All Stater wide receiver Zach Shane and standout running back
Nate Lidtke both return. Northwood-Kensett said goodbye to one very
talented athlete in Eric Parker. This All Stater knew how to run the
option and gave teams fits. One player that is back is Preston Davidson, a
very underrated athlete who led the team in receiving. SCMT returns
quarterback Josh Nalan and running back Jordan Mondt. These two preps were
impressive on both sides of the ball.

245121.gif
Thoughts on District 3 for 2005:

Postville had an exciting run last season that saw them finish the regular
season undefeated. But the luck of the Pirates seemed to run out in the
first round of the postseason as they were blanked by Northwood-Kensett.
Both Postville All State players, Joel Hanson and Alex Berns, have since
graduated. The Pirates accomplished a lot last fall, which included
breaking Elgin Valley's district win streak, but a great senior class is now
gone. Elgin Valley also fell at the hands of Northwood-Kensett in the
playoffs but this time it was in the quarterfinals. Despite the setback,
the Tigers may have what it takes to fight for another district title and more.
Returning for the team are their three leading rushers, Matt Sodoma, Derek Kleve,
and Greg Schutte. Sodoma was named All State at linebacker and is a load
to handle on both sides of the ball. Also coming back for Elgin Valley is
junior athlete Jacob Larson, who brought down as impressive six interceptions
last fall. The district ended up a two-team race but both Dunkerton and
Central Elkader will hope to get in-contention this fall. Dunkerton saw
running back Robby Marquart graduate. This standout rushed for over 1,500
yards and led the offensive attack. Central Elkader graduated third team
All State defensive back Dan Bauder. Kee Lansing graduated their
quarterback, leading rusher, and leading receiver. But one player who
might see a bigger role on both sides of the ball is junior Brett Meyer.
His numbers were not amazing but they were very solid for a sophomore at the
varsity level. A player to keep an eye on for the future is sophomore
Darin Lockard of West Central Maynard. His future is very bright.

Sleeper team:

West Central
Maynard - Underrated team with a wealth of young talent.

Sleeper Player:

Matt Sodoma - He was named All State last year and does not receive much

Lisbon

Lost to WACO in the first round (6-33)

Thoughts on District 4 for 2005:

East Buchanan was the team to beat in this district last fall but will
really feel the loss of athlete Cannon Dolan. This All Stater made an
impact on both sides of the ball and was a very good leader at quarterback and
defensive back. Also gone is leading rusher Bryce Griswold but senior
running back Andrew Mass will be back. His role will likely shift to be
featured more often in the Buccaneer's offense. Lisbon also has been a
very tough team to beat in-district play over the past few years and made
another trip to the postseason. Although it ended early to WACO, the Lions
had a very successful overall season. Lineman Jordan Edgerly will need to
be replaced. He was named All State last year after giving the opposition
some serious headaches. As the year wore on, it really ended up being a
two-team race but four-teams were still within striking distance. Olin
returns an explosive passing attack and quarterback Colton Hansen. With
another year of workouts under his belt, look for this senior to reduce his
interceptions and help his team to more wins. Also returning are two of
their top three receivers. Preston returns a very talented athlete in
Mitch Petersen. He was productive in a lot of areas last year. One
player to keep an eye on for Alburnett is Jordan Bergren. As a junior, he
was tough to stop at wide receiver and made his presence felt defensively as
well.

Sleeper team:

Olin - Their passing attack gives the opposition problems.

Colton Hansen - If he can reduce his interceptions, watch out.

Thoughts on District 5 for 2005:

If you want to talk about one of the most heated rivalries on the
IowaPreps.com Message Boards, I have to say that WACO and North Mahaska is near,
if not at the top of the list. Both teams had great seasons last year and
each has a chance to be fighting for a State title once again. Although
many people forget this, WACO did win the district last year (I am not even
going to go into the game). Both starting quarterback and go-to running
back are now gone for the Warriors. But they do return one of the best
athletes in Iowa in Travis Temple. This senior nearly caught 800 receiving
yards last season and averaged over 20 yards per catch. Temple also
snagged seven interceptions defensively and will be back. The team was hit
hard by graduation but does also return junior linebacker Chayse Roth.
When looking at North Mahaska, the team starts with standout Levi Ferguson.
This senior is a very tough athlete who plays his heart out both at running back
and linebacker. He played a huge role in the team's run towards the State
title last fall. But also don't forget about quarterback Joel Stout and a
number of other players. This team tasted a lot of success last year in
the playoffs and that experience could be huge if they want to take another run
at the Dome. BCLUW fell short of the playoffs with losses to the two top
teams but they have a great deal of their talent returning. Juniors Chris
Crawford and Beau Dielschneider were named All State. HLV also is a very
young team that was up and down last fall.

Sleeper team:

BCLUW - Watch out because they may be ready to make a postseason run this fall.

Sleeper Player:

Beau Dielschneider - This junior put up some nice numbers last fall.

Thoughts on District 6 for 2005:

Madrid went undefeated all season before they were buzz sawed by West
Bend-Mallard in the semifinals. Despite the loss, they had a very good
season overall. Gone from that team are some important pieces, including
running back Sam Milani and quarterback Garret Reddish. The Tigers do
return junior-to-be fullback Caleb Blattel as well as All State linemen Tyler
Anderson and Bill Badgley. Earlham gave Madrid a run for the district
title but fell short in the end. Running back Jake Slusher was a first
team All District pick and has a chance to fight for All State honors this fall.
Slusher is a very talented junior-to-be. Colo-Nesco had a strong finish
last fall and bring back a very talented running back in junior-to-be Cody
Olson. Also keep an eye on Andy Becker. Hubbard-Radcliffe returns a
very potent combination in quarterback Nick Pearson and running back Dusty Wilke.

Sleeper team:

Hubbard-Radcliffe - The big question is if they can find anyone around Wilke and
Pearson.

Sleeper Player:

Jake Slusher - Why is this junior-to-be not receiving more love?

Thoughts on District 7 for 2005:

In 2004, the district ended up splitting into two groups. One that
made a push for the postseason and one that did not. In the end, Guthrie
Center was able to take home the district title despite being beaten once.
The five teams that made a playoff push made this district very tough on a
weekly-basis. That Guthrie Center team had four played named All State and
one is returning in defensive back Andrew Meier. This junior pulled in
seven interceptions and his role will expand this fall. Another Tiger to
keep an eye on is sophomore Spencer Railsback. This running back will
likely be featured this season and has a chance to rush for over 1,000 yards.
Woodbine has a solid nucleus of players returning, which include athlete Kane
Thompson and quarterback Brady Dickinson. Thompson played a variety of
positions and was very tough to stop. A-H-S-T fell short of a playoff
berth in the end and will be hoping for some similar success this season.
One Viking to keep an eye on is Don Bladt, who snagged six interceptions and led
the team in receiving last year. For Manning, two-time All State tight end
Brian Fogelman has moved on to playing basketball at Buena Vista. Despite
his loss, this team once again returns a lot of talent. Junior quarterback
Brad Renze returns as does three of their top four rushers from last year.
The Bulldogs will have to fill the holes defensively early in the season that
were caused by graduation. And what about Treynor? The 2003 State
champions will be looking to get back to the playoffs this year and do return
All Stater Austin Frain. This man among boys is finally a senior and will
play a huge role on both sides of the ball for the Cardinals. The team has
some holes to fill around him but look for him to have a monster season.
This district will be very exciting all season and every game will count to
which team makes the postseason.

Sleeper team:

Manning - Their offensive attack is still powerful and may surprise some people.

Sleeper Player:

Spencer Railsback - This sophomore has a bright future.

Thoughts on District 8 for 2005:

Led by a dominant senior class stocked full of athletes, Galva-Holstein
dominated district play and finished the regular season undefeated. Their
run ended in the playoffs to the eventual champions, West Bend Mallard.
But for the record, the Pirates gave them their toughest game of the playoffs.
Galva-Holstein was hit very hard by graduation but returns Ben Butcher, David
Doxtad, and Austin Todd. This trio tasted the success from last year and
will be hoping to replicate it this fall. Gehlen Catholic was the second
team to make the postseason and will miss the presence of athlete Joe Wells.
This standout receiver made a name for himself but the team has some very
talented players returning. Running backs Alex Loutsch and Andy Neary both
return as well as lineman Brian Kilker. Kingsley-Pierson returns standout
running back Nick Kuchel but will have some major holes to fill on both sides of
the ball. Wall Lake View Auburn had a very productive season last fall but
was lead by a senior oriented team. The majority of their top players have
since graduated.

Sleeper team:

Kingsley-Pierson - The team will go as far as athlete Nick Kuchel can take them.

Sleeper Player:

Brian Kilker - This big lineman takes up a lot of space.

The End Zone - August 1st

Can you really believe today is August 1st and
that football games will be played in the very near future? And after a
weekend of talking to a lot of football prospects, the talk is obviously that
their team is talented and will be hoping to make the UNI-Dome. But like
every year, you really never know what will happen until they put on the pads
and play some very meaningful district and conference games. For the
smaller teams, those first two games don't mean that much if you can run the
table in-district play.

183803.gif
Looking
at the Class 4A field, one team who is being extremely hyped up is Cedar Falls.
They return the majority of their players from last year and really could have
what it takes to win a State title on their home field. But before looking
that far ahead, they are going to have to get past the first two games of the
season. Tight end Schuyler Oordt broke his ankle in a 7-on-7
passing camp at Dike-New Hartford and will likely miss at least one game.
At this point it still depends on his progress but he is hoping to get clearance
at the end of August.

183763.gif
Also
missing time for the Tigers is running back Taylor Brookins. I
spoke with this senior-to-be after hearing a lot of rumors floating around and
Brookins will miss the first two games of the year. Because of a school
policy, this standout will be forced to miss those two games because he was
in-attendance at a party that was broken up. And although he was doing
nothing illegal, school policy was to suspend him for twenty percent of the
season just for being there.

The team that knocked the Tigers out of the
postseason last year was Iowa City High, who made it to the semifinals before
losing to the eventual champions Bettendorf. The Little Hawks are once
again loaded with talent and seniors Ben Evans and Dorian Davis will both play
huge roles this year. But it looks like sophomore-to-be James Ferentz
could also see time on both sides of the ball. James, who is the son
of Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz, has a chance to be a very special player for
City High. Remember that name this fall.

200131.gif
Moving
to smaller classes, Waukee quarterback Tim Getting was one of the few
returning players at his position who earned All State honors. As a
junior, this talented prep helped his team to a final four finish before losing
to Harlan. The main schools Getting has been receiving interest from have
been Northern Iowa, Iowa State, Wisconsin, South Dakota, Army, and Truman State.

As for Class 2A, the team that I expect to start
the season #1 is Sigourney-Keota. They are loaded to the brim with
talented seniors-to-be returning and have a very tradition-rich program.
One of their returning All Staters, Tyler Sheets, has continued to
receive interest from two in-state programs. It seems Northern Iowa and
Iowa State are showing him the most interest.

244324.gif
Although
the football season is nearly underway, the AAU basketball circuit just finished
up and there is always interesting news. Jason Bohannon, who was
named among the top five at the NIKE Camp, has been sidelined. This
senior-to-be and future Wisconsin Badger has once again torn meniscus in his
knee. Bohannon did the same thing last spring but this time he did it on
the other side of the knee. The cure to help his knee get better is rest,
which is a very difficult thing for a gym rat like Bohannon. Overall the
rest may help this standout because now he can spend more time in the weight
room and it gives him a breather before fall workouts.

Simpson held their huge team camp this past
weekend and although IowaPreps.com was not there, someone in-attendance reported
that three of the big school teams really stood out. They included
Bettendorf, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, and Iowa City West. For West and
Kennedy, it really is not much of a surprise because of the talent they have
returning. As for the defending State champions from Bettendorf, it is a
surprise considering they lost a number of contributors from last year.
One player who really looks like he has gotten a lot better for the Bulldogs is
junior-to-be Charlie Schwartz. As a sophomore, this heady point
guard played varsity basketball. With another year of experience under his
belt, look for Schwartz to really make a name for himself in the MAC Conference.

For Iowa Conference news, one player that the
Wartburg coaches are high on is incoming point guard Cashes Mason.
This West Des Moines Valley prep is extremely quick and could be a very talented
player for the Knights. Like most prep players, he will need to add
strength early to contribute.

Speaking of Wartburg, the buzz at Snow Valley was
that the camp will not be held in Waverly next summer. Why you ask?
Although it has yet to be fully approved, the Knights will be putting over 30
million dollars into renovation and additions to their sports complex. I
did not see any diagrams but what they are planning on doing sounds amazing.
If other schools in the IIAC had trouble recruiting against Wartburg in the
past, there will be now 30 million more reasons to become a Knight. If
this does get approved, construction should start shortly after the 2005-2006
basketball season.

The End Zone - May 13th

156235.jpg
The Class of 2005 continues to have a number of
basketball players finalize college plans. One of the most recent that was
talked about was Waterloo East guard Tyrone Scott, who is headed to Tyler
Junior College in Texas. Scott will be teamed with his former AAU
teammate, Nate Garner. This senior looked at a variety of junior
colleges in Iowa and Wayne State College in Nebraska before making his final
decision. With former Martin Bros. forward Jessan Gray coming back
home to Iowa State, the coaches at Tyler may have struck a pipeline into Iowa.

155310.gif
Another player who had Division II interest was
Webster City guard Brock Jacobson. This senior has been named All
State over the past two years and his decision finally became public recently.
Instead of being a standout at the Division II level, Jacobson will walk-on at
Iowa State. He will hope to follow in the footsteps of John Neal. He
walked-on after a nice prep career at Winterset and eventually earned a
scholarship. That will give Jacobson a great deal of motivation of the
next four or five years.

Two of the most interesting recruiting stories
that I have heard lately center around Buena Vista. The Beavers have
dominated the Iowa Conference over the past six years and just continue to get
better. They have an outstanding recruiting class coming in but it appears
that there has been some changes with the players that initially thought had
verballed. Ryan Sones of Laurens-Marathon was a 6-foot-10 All
Stater and expected to be headed to Storm Lake. A late charge by NIACC and
head coach Steve Krafcisin helped sway this standout into signing with the
Trojans.

Although they may have lost one prep, Buena Vista
also gained another. Sioux City Heelan forward Matt Cleveland was a
three year starter and many expected him to earn All State honors as a senior.
Although he fell short of that goal, when Cleveland came to play, he was nearly
unstoppable. He is a tough player to guard because he has the ability to
score both inside and outside. Cleveland had some very strong interest
from Division II schools but spurned them to play basketball at Buena Vista.

I reported on The End Zone recently that they had
signed Decorah forward Brett Humpal. Now they have added another
underrated prep player in Andrew Ellingboe of Central Lee.
Ellingboe is a standout in multiple sports and will likely be even better once
he focuses on basketball. On top of his skill in sports, he also was named
Academic All Conference.

156887.jpg
This
is a late edition but I thought it was important to highlight three players.
Although he had to play through injury during most of his senior season, Cedar
Rapids Jefferson guard Tyler Born had a lot of interest from Iowa
Conference schools and other programs across the country. Born decided to
continue his hoops career at Washington University in St. Louis. This
decision was based on the outstanding academics offered by the school.

Two other players who received some serious
attention were Nashua-Plainfield forwards Nick and Kyle Kramer.
These cousins helped the Huskies to a great season on the basketball court and
have decided to remain teammates at the next level. This Kramer duo will
be playing next winter in Waverly, Iowa for the Knights of Wartburg. Both
have the ability to score inside and outside.

134643.gif
The
biggest news this past week was obviously Jason Bohannon. After an
official visit, he called Coach Bo Ryan and verbally committed to the Badgers on
Saturday. What this does is make the Wisconsin and Iowa recruiting classes
interesting. The Badgers have one spot open and it will likely be either
Trevon Hughes or Jerry Smith, depending on who commits first. The Hawkeyes
are hoping to land Hughes and Minnesota standout Isiah Dahlman. This new
is not Iowa preps but it concerns who the Hawkeyes end up with and who will be
playing with Bohannon in the future.

179975.jpg
On
the football side of things, I posted an article today about Austen Arnaud
earning his third offer from the University of Houston. For whatever
reason, I keep hearing that the Cougars have been offering all the top players
across the Midwest. Top athletes in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Iowa now have
seen Houston come out of nowhere and just offer them. For most of these
offers, I see it adding to the players offer total and not much else.

I hope you enjoyed this latest installment of

The End Zone - May 6th

Over the past few End Zones, we have focused on
the basketball recruiting in the Class of 2005. There have been a great
deal of seniors making plans for next year and the majority have already made
their decisions. With the Division I and II schools having mostly finished
up their recruiting, NAIA and Division III schools can now really begin to wrap
things up. Two teams who appear to have finished their recruiting Class of
2005 is Northwestern in Orange City and Buena Vista. I broke down both
recruiting classes recently and hope to do the same for other small colleges.
This is a new feature and could be interesting when comparing who brought in the
top Iowa Conference class. It will take some feedback from coaches but
could be something that is a lot of fun.

155584.jpg
Going
back to the senior class, two of the most recent commitments have come to
Division I and Division II schools. As posted on the Off the Record forum
earlier this week, it has been confirmed that Dan Bohall of Sioux City
East will be walking-on at Iowa. This talented guard had a wide variety of
interest from schools all over the country, including programs in North and
South Dakota as well as Oral Roberts. In the end, the dream of playing for
the Hawkeyes was tough to turn down. This 6-foot-4 wing joins Bettendorf
guard Brett Wessels as walk-ons in this class. An interesting note
is that these two faced off against one another in the Class 4A semifinals.

155276.jpg
Now
looking at the Division II ranks, one player who saw a wide variety of interest
was Jefferson-Scranton guard Brett Fagen. This first team all
conference selection has proven time and time again that he can flat out shoot
the ball. After looking at a number of options, Fagen had recruiting
narrowed down to Upper Iowa and Cornell. Each school has its positives and
negatives but money offered and the chance to play Division II basketball helped
lead Fagen to Upper Iowa. He will be spending the next four years in
Fayette, Iowa playing for the Peacocks as they develop as a Division II program.
With his commitment, Fagen joins John Schutte of Wapsie Valley as Iowans
in this recruiting class.

Although it is fun to figure out where these
seniors are going, a number of younger preps have seen their recruiting recently
start to take off. This recruiting has increased enough that two preps
recently earned their first scholarship offer. One player in the Class of
2006 and the other in 2007.

158099.jpg
Starting
with the junior, Battle Creek-Ida Grove wing forward Casey Harriman put
up some monster numbers on the basketball court. Although he changed AAU
teams this off-season, college coaches have continued to take notice of this
high scoring talent. As reported earlier this week on the Off the Record
Forum, Harriman earned his first scholarship offer from the Wyoming Cowboys.
Coach Steve McClain made a visit recently and had seen enough of Harriman to
offer. The Cowboys have had success in the past and appear to be
recruiting the State hard once again. They landed Linn-Mar bigman
Travis Nelson
this year and have also been taking a long look at Sioux City
East wing forward Roman Gentry.

158452.jpg
The
big news of the week pertains to Johnston bigman Brent Barz. In
just his first season at the varsity level, this sophomore blew up and finished
the year with All State honors. Because of his size, perimeter skills, and
potential, college coaches from across the Midwest have started to take some
serious notice of this Barz. Those attributes were enough for the Northern
Iowa coaching staff to extend a scholarship offer recently. Unless Barz
makes a decision soon, I would expect him to see more scholarship offers.
He has some major skills and if he continues growing, watch out. One
advantage Northern Iowa may have in his recruiting is that his parents both
attended college in Cedar Falls.

AUSTENARNAUD120.JPG
Now
we need to switch our focus to football. Many Iowans are in the final
stages of preparation for the NIKE camp and will be traveling either to Ann
Arbor, Michigan or Manhattan, Kansas on Sunday. Austen Arnaud of
Ames, Taylor Brookins of Cedar Falls, and many others will be competing
against the best in the Midwest. I want to wish all Iowa preps the best of
luck on Sunday.

BENLAMAK2_11120.JPG
Speaking
of Arnaud, the Iowa State Cyclones were the first to drop this standout a call.
The coaches called him late on Sunday and have been also making some other
in-state calls. Preps we have confirmed that the Iowa State staff include
Ben Lamaak of Cedar Rapids Kennedy and Mike O'Connell of Iowa City
Regina. Over the next week we plan to get in-touch with these preps and
many more on how the calling period has been for them.

The End Zone - April 29th

There are still a number of prep players in the
Class of 2005 who are being recruited hard. Some of these players are
narrowing things down while others have decided to end the recruiting process
and make a decision. This End Zone is another addition to last
week's version.

193873.gif
One of the most widely recruited areas of the
state is the Iowa side of the Quad Cities. Schools from Illinois,
Wisconsin, and Iowa have always shown interest and one Quad Cities prep has
landed at Elmhurst College. Pleasant Valley bigman Matt Winter was
being recruited by a variety of schools in the Iowa Conference and Midwest
Classic Conference before making a recent decision. The Bluejays picked up
a talented bigman who has a bright future. He has size and the ability to
knock down the 15-foot jumper.

163566.jpg
One eastern Iowan who will be staying in-state to
play basketball is Michael Tierney of Cedar Rapids Jefferson. This
explosive guard had some monster games this
season and saw his role change dramatically as
some of his teammates went down with injuries. Tierney received a great
deal of attention from schools in-state. Tierney narrowed it down to Mt.
Mercy, Cornell, and Iowa Wesleyan before committing to Coach Mike DeGeorge and
the Cornell Rams. With a lot of question marks heading into next season,
this pre definitely has a chance to get some early playing time in Mt. Vernon.

224973.gif
The J-Hawks had a number of players receive
recruiting attention but another school who had some talented players was
Carroll. Seniors Sean Haluska and Shane Nissen both were
sought after by schools at a number of different levels and had a lot of
options. There had been a rumor floating around about Haluska going to
Buena Vista but this All Stater will be headed to Indian Hills Community
College. At one time or another, this standout had interest from all
levels, including Division I. Nissen on the other hand had a big decision
to make between going junior college or Division III. He has decided to
play in the Iowa Conference and will be headed to Wartburg College.

157952.jpg
Nissen will be
teaming with Dubuque Wahlert guard Ryan Burbach in Wavlery. This senior committed to Wartburg on
Tuesday night and we already spoke with him about the commitment in this
article here.

Back to the Junior College ranks, NIACC was able
to nab two talented teammates from Waterloo East. Both Master Irvin
and De’Lain Riley have signed Letters of Intent to play next season for
the Trojans. Irvin was named second team all conference in the MVC and
Riley was named honorable mention.

181624.gif
One of the biggest commitments headed to an Iowa
Conference near you for next year is Brian Fogelman. This bigman
from Manning has helped his team to a final four finish in each of the past two
seasons is a done deal to Buena Vista. AAU teammate and
conference-rival Teddy Hawley was a major selling point for this All Stater to
head to Storm Lake.

As for Buena Vista, one player I talked about in
the last End Zone was Ryan Sones of Laurens-Marathon. This bigman
stands 6-foot-10 and is a thick 260 pounds. From every indication he is
not the normal Division III player at his height and can finish well around the
hoop. Sones has committed to the Beavers. If he works hard and
continues to progress, he has a chance to be a very tough player to guard in the
Iowa Conference.

156985.jpg
The commitments listed above have either been
confirmed by a coach, player, or a relative of the player. Since there are
still some very good players left in the recruiting world, it may be time to
talk about rumors.

The two best rumors that I have heard at this
point involve the two top Iowa Conference teams, Buena Vista and Wartburg.
Both of these have not been confirmed, but have been talked about. The
Knights of Wartburg are close in location to Nashua-Plainfield and may have
landed their two top players, Nick Kramer and Kyle Kramer.
Both are very skilled players who have the ability to score. Each one will
need to put on weight to handle college basketball, but if they are indeed
headed to Waverly, the Knight's staff has brought in two potential players.

There are still a number of players who have not
made their decision. We spoke with Danny Stark of Nevada and he seems to
be looking hard at Wartburg, Simpson, and Central. Stayed tuned as we get
more and more information on players from the Class of 2005.

The End Zone - April 22nd

161710.jpg
There are still a number of prep players in the
Class of 2005 who are being recruited hard. Some of these players are
narrowing things down while others have decided to end the recruiting process
and make a decision. This version of The End Zone is a sequel to last
week's version.

One of the most talented point guards in Iowa over
the past few years has been Andrew Stimson of Clarinda. This
standout has been very elusive on the court as well as on the phone but
IowaPreps.com recently found out that this senior is headed to Northwestern
College in Orange City. The Red Raider coaching staff picked up a very
talented player in Stimson, who spent last summer as the backup point guard on
Martin Bros.

163561.jpg
Another NAIA school who has been recruiting Iowa
hard has been Briar Cliff. With Kelvin Adams of Madrid already in
the fold, two other Iowans have also signed on. One player who will be
staying close to home is Sioux City East point guard Ian Banks.
This senior helped his team to a third place finish in Class 4A and is an
intelligent floor leader. Also signing on was Kuemper Catholic guard
Alex Schleisman
. This talented athlete had a nice senior season and
has proven to be one of the most athletic wings in Iowa.

192349.gif
Iowa Wesleyan and Coach Al Magnani have been
working the State of Iowa hard to bring some standout preps to the school and
they recently landed one. Decorah forward Brett Humpal signed a his
Letter of Intent to attend the school earlier this week. Humpal is a very
skilled forward who can play inside as well as outside. He also is a very
underrated athlete who quarterbacked the football team to the Class 3A State
title game.

155697.gif
The Junior Colleges around Iowa have also been
recruiting the State hard. One school who saw a recent change in the
coaching staff was Indian Hills, but that did not stop them from landing two
in-state preps. Both are from the Des Moines area and are great athletes.
Des Moines Hoover forward J'Sean Gaddy blew up this summer and will be
showcasing his skills at the junior college level. Also joining him will
be Des Moines East point guard Ashton Sauls, who spurned football offers
to continue playing basketball.

J
155193.jpg
ust because Upper Iowa is the only Division II
school in Iowa does not mean they should be not included on this list. The
Peacocks were able to end the recruiting period with a signature from Wapsie
Valley point guard John Schutte. Although he is undersized, this
senior put up some monster numbers and even led the State in scoring (And yes he
did average more than Casey Harriman).

156829.jpg
One prep who decided to leave the State to
continue his basketball career at the DII level was Grant Franzen of
Waverly-Shell Rock. This very underrated athlete was taking a hard look at
Quincy or going the Junior College route but felt comfortable with Coach Marty
Bell and the Hawk program. Quincy had shown him a great deal of interest
and Coach Bell attended their game against Decorah, the same one that
IowaPreps.com was at as well.

What about the Division III schools? The
interesting thing about these schools is that the players basically give a
non-binding verbal commitment and might send a deposit to reserve their spot at
the school. With that in mind, the players may say they are coming but it
is never 100% sure until the player gets to campus in the late summer. And
that is exactly the reason why a lot of Division III schools are being extremely
tight lipped on recruiting. There have been a ton of rumors about a lot of
players going to Iowa Conference schools, but until I get a player or a coach to
confirm the rumors, I will not be posting them. Or maybe I will, depending
of course on how good the rumors are.

The Complete List of Signees - D1, D2, D3

If you know of any preps who have verballed or
signed with schools at the Division I-AA, Division I-AA, Division II, or
Division III levels, please add a reply and the player will be added.
Please add it in this format:

Player's name - Player's high school - Player's
Future College (What level it is)

An example would be:

Alex Thompson - Ames - Iowa (Division One)

Division One Signees

Jimmy Binnie - Johnston - Dayton

Dylan Grimsley - Sioux City Heelan - UNC-Wilmington

Alex Thompson - Ames - Iowa

Steven Wetrich - Ottumwa - Denver

Brent Wilson - Cedar Rapids Prairie - Albany

Division Two Signees

Travis Person - Tipton - Augustana

Division Three Verbals

NAIA Signees

Adam Fahrenkrog - North Scott - St. Ambrose

Junior College Signees

Shaun Logan - North Scott - Kirkwood

Dain Swetalla - Pleasant Valley - Kirkwood

The End Zone - April 15th

I have heard many times that the senior class is
not very talented as a whole but there are a lot of players who have been
receiving college interest. Because the total number of players who can
play at the next level is small, some of these players are hearing from a lot of
schools. And by schools, I do not mean just Division I programs. I
was a Division III player and I have to give some love to those players taking
the small college route.

181624.gif
The big question is where should I start?
I'll take it back to the State tournament where a number of standout players
were showcasing their skills. At the Class 1A level, one of the most
recruited players in the entire class was the eventual Player of the Year,
Brian Fogelman
. This All Stater turned down schools recruiting him for
football and is looking to where he will continue playing hoops. The three
schools who are vying for his services are Buena Vista, Dana, and Briar Cliff.
Each school offers different things and that is making this a very difficult
decision for Fogelman. Buena Vista has been rumored to be the favorite but
time will tell where he ends up.

156888.gif
Speaking of the Beavers, with five senior starters
graduating, the team needs to continue to stock the cupboard for more title
runs. Two players who have already pledged to come to Storm Lake are
Teddy Hawley
of Ar-We-Va and Jon Millea of Davenport Assumption.
Hawley is an All Stater who was looking at a number of schools in the recruiting
process but could showcase his skills early for the Beavers. Hawley is
also a major plus in the recruitment of Fogelman. The Buena Vista coaching
staff likes their 3-men big and Millea is that. This senior stands
6-foot-7 but will need to put on some serious weight at the college level.
The plus side is that if he can get strong, he does have perimeter skills and
could be a tough matchup for opposing teams in the IIAC.

163558.jpg
One player who might have been the most recruited
player by IIAC schools was Jake Oeth of Ogden. This senior was
looking hard at Simpson and Central before committing to Loras. Oeth could
have taken the NAIA or JuCo route but felt comfortable with the Duhawk coaching
staff.

When looking for players at the Division III/NAIA
level, it is important to find players with a big upside. One prep who has
a chance to do some damage if he puts in the work is Ryan Sones of
Laurens-Marathon. This 6-foot-10 senior recently took a visit to Wayne
State but is rumored to be down to Buena Vista and Simpson. The Storm have
struggled in head-to-head battles with BV but could things change here?

155417.gif
The CIML normally has a strong presence in
recruiting and that is once again the case this year. West Des Moines
Dowling proved to be a very recruited school this season and two of their
players are likely headed to college. Guard Devin Whiteley will
continue with sports and academics at Iowa State. This All Stater has
proven to be one of the most effective shooters in Iowa. Teammate David
Ferezy
may not look like much of an athlete but once you get him on the
basketball court, watch out. This senior can dunk with ease and blocks a
lot of shots. Grades are not a problem with Ferenzy as he is looking hard
at both Simpson and Central.

196226.gif
Although he won't be playing in the Iowa
Conference, Marshalltown point guard Andrew Peschong made his decision
over spring break. This senior visited both Southwest Minnesota State and
Iowa State over his time off and decided he wanted to head north to continue his
basketball career. Peschong mentioned that this was a tough decision for
him but a scholarship and the chance to play early was more important to him
than walking-on with the Cyclones.

One NAIA school that has had a strong year
recruiting has been Dordt. They were able to land Scott Van Zanten
and Jordan Zantingh out of Pella Christian. Both players are very
tall and could land early playing time. Two others headed to the College
are Aaron Teerink and Mark Rowenhorst. Teerink is from Hull
Western Christian while Rowenhorst is from Unity Christian.

163582.jpg
Some
of the Division II signees that I have already mentioned include Michael
Dickes
of Sioux Center, Jonathon Thomas of Maquoketa Valley, David
Walters
of BCLUW, and Joshua Hughes of Forest City all to Wayne
State. Two confirmed junior college signings include Dion Curry of
Des Moines Roosevelt to Iowa Western and Adam Rodenberg to Kirkwood.

221378.gif
Two
players who have a big decision ahead of them are Dan Bohall of Sioux
City East and Brett Wessels of Bettendorf. Both made the All
Tournament team at Vets and are looking at some similar schools. Both have
been offered walk-on roles at Iowa and Illinois State has come strong into the
picture for both. With one scholarship recently opening up, will the
Redbirds offer one of these standouts or go elsewhere with their offer?

Stayed tuned as IowaPreps.com will keep users
updated of the recruiting saga for the Class of 2005.

IowaPreps.com All State Sophomores - Defense

Two things
before going into the main list. Although I tried hard to get all
the all conference and the all districts lists from across the State,
there are a lot that were missing. Because there are not a great
deal of sophomores playing varsity, it was tough at times for this list.
However, I did make posts on the football board about it and this list is
final. If there are players I should keep an eye on in the future,
please email me at Luke@Rivals.com.
And for the second thing, if you are a sophomore who has not played
varsity, it doesn't mean you won't be able to play college football.
Look for example at Pat Angerer and Travis Rhone, two of the top seniors
this year. Both were not brought up to varsity until their junior
year. And now on to the list:

DL
Andrew Billerbeck
Gladbrook-Reinbeck

Starter for the Rebel team that made it to
the championship game before bowing out to Council Bluffs St. Albert.

DL
Leon Drake
Chariton

Drake was a man among boys this past year
and earned just about every All State honor possible. He has a very
bright future ahead of him.

DL
Jason Killeen
Kuemper Catholic

This all district pick helped get Kuemper
Catholic in the postseason.

LB
T.J. Hicks
Nodaway Valley

Hicks stepped up his play at linebacker to
lessen the loss of three All State seniors the year before.

LB
Scott Wagner
Ankeny

Not very often do sophomores start on
varsity for Ankeny, but Wagner made a name for himself by playing smart
and hard football.

LB
Adam Gregerson
Gilbert

This sophomore helped his team make a deep
postseason run and surprise Class 2A fans along the way.

LB
Donavon Grove
Southeast Webster

An all district selection, Grove made a name
for himself during the regular season.

LB
Joel Godfredsen
Armstrong-Ringsted

Godfredsen did the same as he earned second
team all district honors.

LB
Adam Martensen
Iowa City Regina

Although the majority of the Regina players
were juniors, Martensen made an impact early and often at the varsity
level. He was a first team all district selection and was
honored by the Press Citizen.

DB
Tyler Sash
Oskaloosa

This multi-sport athlete is outstanding at
football and basketball but earned his first All State honors on the
football field. He is explosive on both sides of the ball.

DB
Eric Hammes
Sigourney-Keota

Hammes was the only sophomore starter on the
Savage Cobra team that finished undefeated in the regular season.

DB
Michael Lahart
Chariton

Like his teammate Leon Drake, Lahart did
some amazing things as a sophomore. He picked off seven passes and
took three of them in for touchdowns.

Stayed tuned as
IowaPreps.com will be bringing more on the top sophomores and juniors
across the State of Iowa.

The End Zone - December 13th

TYLERBLUM120.JPG
Before going into the End Zone, I just wanted
to say that I am glad we are back. I haven't had a chance to put one of
these together for quite sometime but I have a lot of information in football
and basketball that I will share with users.

ANDY-KUEMPEL1202.JPG
First, lets take a look at some of the top
football players in the Class of 2005.
This class brings back the bread and butter of Iowa while being loaded with
linemen. These top linemen have been making visits. Tyler Blum
and Andy Kuempel both finally made their official visits to Iowa over
the past two weeks. The interesting thing about Kuempel's visit is that he
had to leave on Saturday night and head over to the Five Seasons Center for a
basketball game. He made it back in time to see the Hawkeyes snag some of
the other top linemen in the country, including Rafeal Eubanks of Minnesota and
possibly more silent commitments.

As for the players who haven't decided their
future, Matt Pipho started his official visits this Saturday.
Because of a basketball game on Friday night, Pipho was unable to leave for
Oregon until Saturday so he stayed an extra day and will return later tonight.
IowaPreps.com plans to get a hold of this standout and talk about the visit.
In
MATTPIPHO05120.JPG

other Pipho news, Nebraska and Oklahoma have come on hard for his services as of
late. The Cornhuskers and Bill Callahan have been trying hard to get Pipho
to commit, but at this point, it appears he will be taking at least his two
scheduled official visits to Miami and Stanford. As for the new coach at
Stanford, how will that effect his recruiting? Time will tell but if Walt
Harris was smart, he'd be calling Pipho as soon as possible before another team
can snag him. If Pipho decides to wait, he still has two other official
visits up for grabs. Some schools that could come on strong include
Wisconsin, Minnesota, and other schools in the Midwest. At this point
these schools are waiting for the cards to fall from some of the other linemen
in this class. If and when they do, Pipho could see a lot more schools
showing him interest late. Could it be too little too late or could a new
school sway him their way?

Also don't forget about Chris Mensen of
Solon. Although people continue to keep the rumor mill going that he is a
done deal to Minnesota, this senior still continues to receive interest from
both Iowa and Iowa State. Mensen will be headed to the home of the Gophers
this weekend for his first official visit. They continue to remain strong
with the offer and have been impressed with his play since the summer camp.
IowaPreps.com
183803.gif
will
keep users updated on his visit.

One of the most interesting developments in
this class is happening with Sioux City West athlete BJ Steed. This
UAB verbal is currently finishing up his high school classes and will be headed
down to Birmingham at the end of December. This will give him a head start
on classes as well as spring football. Look for more in the very near
future about this.

155415.gif
Looking more towards the Class of
2006, it is still unclear if any other prospects
have been offered outside of Ames stud Austen Arnaud. This class has some
very big boys and a lot of players who could make an impact at the next level.
Currently one position that may be very strong is tight end. Three players
who could play tight end at major college football programs includes Corey
Viet
of AGWSR, Ben Lamaak of Cedar Rapids Kennedy, and also
Schuylar Oordt
of Cedar Falls. What makes this trio so attractive to
college programs is their athleticism as each one is a multi-sport athlete.
All three are strong, can run, and big in-size. Is there really much more
a college coach wants?

Moving our attention to basketball, the Class
of 2006 is loaded with talented players. I still believe that Jason
Bohannon
of Linn-Mar is the best player in the State and saw nothing to
change my mind in the Lions win on Saturday. For the next two years, every
player
134643.gif
guarding him will do their best to prove that they are better than him.
Washington tried just about everything to shut him down but he still ended with
twenty points. As far as recruiting goes for this junior, Iowa and
Wisconsin have both offered. Stanford, Illinois, NC State, and a load of
others are all showing him a lot of attention. Because Bohannon recently
took his ACT's, he will be able to make his first official visit to Stanford at
the end of January. Taking that visit might be enough to earn an offer
from the Cardinals. When I talked to him after their game on Saturday, it
was obvious that Bohannon was very excited to check out the campus and
facilities at Stanford.

154478.jpg
Another player who currently holds a
scholarship offer from this class is Keaton Frye of North Scott. It
is obvious that the Lancers are much different without their trio of bigmen, but
Frye has been putting up some solid numbers. Frye took an unofficial visit
to Valparaiso at the end of October and from the sound of things, loved the
visit. What sets them apart from the other schools is that they really get
to know the recruits. Iowa, Wisconsin, Marquette, and others are still
keeping after him actively.

IowaPreps.com will try to get a hold of more
basketball players in the senior and junior classes to update users of their
thoughts on college basketball. Also we will be putting together a lot of
highlight clips from the summer video that we previously had not made available.
Keep an eye on that in the near future.

I also wanted to just extend each and every
premium users a huge thank you for allowing me to do something that I love.
I receive a lot of kind words about the website and they are all appreciated and
make me work harder to increase the traffic at IowaPreps.com.

IowaPreps.com Elite Second Team Offense

After traveling to a variety of games
throughout the past season, IowaPreps.com is taking a look back at all the
players they have seen and honors the top players on both sides of the ball.
We will be bringing users an elite first and second team for both offense and
defense. Our second look is at the IowaPreps.com Elite second team offense
that is loaded with juniors.

QB
Brad Schmit

6-1
195
Waterloo Columbus

This
quarterback would likely have not received this honor if he had not helped
his team to the State title, but Schmit really proved then that he
belonged. He had a great senior season and college programs will
keep in close contact with this standout.

QB
Korey Stephens

5-10
155
Cherokee

If
Stephens senior season would not have ended due to an injury in the
Emmetsburg game, there was a good chance he would have broken even more of
Iowa's passing records. This senior had a great season and proved
that he could win this year, which included a victory over the E-Hawks
that snapped their winning streak.

RB
Brandon Fischer
5-10
165
Council Bluffs St. Albert

Like
Schmit, Fischer was able to win a State title and really proved during the
team's postseason run that he belonged to be mentioned with the best
running backs in the State.

RB
Zac Sandvig
6-1
165
West Des Moines Valley

Although
Sandvig was finally slowed down by Bettendorf in the title game, he really
proved all season that he was among the elite running backs in the State.
He will likely get the Tigers started on a new winning streak next year
and headed back towards the UNI-Dome.

RB
Brad Ruppert
6-0
200
West Bend-Mallard

Another
state title winner, this junior was the leading rusher on one of the top
teams in the State of Iowa. He really made an impact on both sides
of the ball and will have West Bend-Mallard looking for a repeat next
fall.

WR
Luke Brocka
6-3
200
North Butler

Brocka is
a great athlete who put up some huge numbers on the football field this
year. He caught 50 passes for 857 yards and 13 touchdowns.
With numbers like those, he might be an athlete that major college
programs will be looking at this winter.

WR
Michael Harper
5-9
178
Oelwein

Despite
his small stature, Harper has proven to be very difficult to stop over the
past two years. He may be a product of the pass-happy system at
Oelwein, but keep an eye on this junior.

WR
Mike O'Connell
6-1
184
Iowa City Regina

This list
is just loaded with juniors and O'Connell is another one of many.
This phenomenal athlete made a name for himself by making people miss and
scoring touchdowns. Regina used him in a number of ways this year
and that is why he was named All State for the second consecutive season.
O'Connell is also a very good basketball player.

WR
Wade Riley
6-2
175
Cherokee

Riley was
the man for Cherokee this season at wide receiver and received the
majority of the throws from Stephens. He really stepped up to the
challenge of replacing and Brock Campbell and had a very good senior
season.

TE
Ben Percival
6-3
220
West Des Moines Valley

One Class
4A coach called Percival the best tight end they had seen all season.
The other tight end may be going to Iowa State, but this senior had a
great season and deserves a lot more recognition.

OL
David Bohnstengel
6-5
235
Gladbrook-Reinbeck

Bohnstengel was blocking for one of the most talented offenses in his
class and did a very good job. He worked hard on the line and
allowed for big years by the skill players.

OL
Ross Hastert
6-2
250
Harlan

Kevin
Kruse, Greg Applegate, and company may get the recognition during the
season but it is almost always the case that the Cyclones have All State
linemen. This is once again the case with Ross Hastert, who was
tough to get past all year.

OL
R.J. McKee
6-2
240
North Mahaska

McKee
really stepped up his game during the team's postseason run that saw them
upset everyone up until the championship game. He is a repeat All
State select and stood out as a senior.

OL
Matt Schutt
6-5
315
Northeast Hamilton

This 8-man
monster made it very difficult for teams to get at his quarterback and
took up a lot of space along the line.

OL
Tyler Sheets
6-4
275
Sigourney-Keota

Only a
junior, Sheets helped Sigourney-Keota to an undefeated regular season
before falling to Waterloo Columbus in the semifinals. With the bulk
of the team juniors, that loss will motivate them all winter, spring, and
summer.

OL
Justin Steffens
6-7
230
North Fayette

Steffens
was very versatile for North Fayette this past season and played a big
part in their success. He has a big body but also can step out and
catch the pass if need be.

ATH
Jon McLaughlin
6-1
210
Sigourney-Keota

Like
Sheets, McLaughlin is a junior with a very bright future ahead of him.
This running back/linebacker made a name for himself all year and will be
the leader next season. If it was ever fourth and one with the game
on the line, this would be the guy I would give the ball to.

ATH
Levi Ferguson
6-1
190
North Mahaska

Ferguson
is in the same mold as McLaughlin as they both are hard nosed running
back/linebacker combinations. Ferguson put the team on the back
during their postseason run that saw them finish second in their class.
Will this junior be able to get them back to the Dome?

K
Nathan Rausa
5-9
150
Waterloo Columbus

There are
only a handful of kickers who can continually kick balls off into the end
zone, and Rausa is one of them. This senior had a great year with
the Sailors and saw his hard work pay off with a State championship.
