Why FDSE will beat WL

Why does every SE fan get so defensive when someone states an opinion that another team might beat them. SE you haven't earned the reputation that WL has yet. That may change this week, but I believe that you will be utterly disappointed.

Everyone keeps bringing up Madrid like they should be a measuring stick for a good running team. Who is Madrid? What have they done as a program?

Someone also used Avoca as a measuring tool for IKM and SE....... Look what WL did to them last year......Yikes

WL vs CL/GLR has also been used as why WL is weak against the run. I am a CL/GLR fan and I will be the first one to admit that if these teams played again. It would be a complete different game(CL/GLR would still win I believe, but it would be close). WL hammered CL/GLR in the trenches. CL/GLR rushing yards came from the QB getting loose on 2 big runs.

I agree that SE has played better rushing team than WL, and I have an answer to why. The teams in WL district have great athletes and know that they can't beat WL if their bread and butter is the run game. The arrogance CP84 to believe that SE is better than CL/GLR is just laughable. CL/GLR loses this year. Heelan, SC, SPL, and SC. is a great resume.

I know SE is a catholic school so they should recognize the 1st commandment. " I am the Lord your God; you shall not have strange god before me"

You hold O'Toole on a pedestal. You use yards/carry on all of your arguments except his rushing stats. He has 163 more carries than WL leading rusher. I believe this is why some people have been calling SE a 1 trick pony; not because they don't throw.

Finally.... The size advantage, which SE fans are trying to blow off because they think it doesn't matter. Well let me tell you that you IT DOES MATTER. WL isn't just a bunch of slow fatties. These are big, fast, strong, mean SOB farm boys that will get after you for 4 quarters. WL will be the most physical team you will have faced. That is a fact.

I'm sure CP84 or DT#61 will accuse me of not stating facts.......Your correct this is MY OPINION....just like you are stating yours.

LYON COUNTY STRONG............GOOD LUCK WILDCATS

I've seen both teams play. Regardless of any type of stats, SE has not faced a front like the one they will against WL in terms of physicality and skill. It will be a good game with two great teams and coaching staffs. I'll take WL by 7 in a physical, low scoring game.

I'm not big into comparing scores but here is a comparison: IKM beat East Sac....East Sac beat SCC. SCC gave SE a good game twice and missed several opportunities to make them closer (yes SE fans, I know the Gaels had something to do with this). WL beat IKM handily. I know it might not mean much but just something to think about.

SE and WL are very comparable running the ball. That's why they are ranked #1 and #2 in the state in total rushing yards. Others are calling them 1 dimensional because they don't throw not because O'Tool is their most utilized back.

"The arrogance CP84 to believe that SE is better than CL/GLR is just laughable."

I never said SE is a better team than CL/GLR, I said they are a better rushing team. Now you're just making quotes up to fit your argument.

"Everyone keeps bringing up Madrid like they should be a measuring stick

Madrid is the 3rd best rushing team in 1A. Nobody ever said they were an elite team overall or said they were comparable to WL as a team. They don't have much of a defense and they were riddled with injuries the last few games of the season. You can't argue that they were a bad rushing team though. Santi is one of the best play makers in the state and SE held him to 32 yards on 13 carries. It's not a big deal that SE blew them out, it is however an accomplishment to hold them to 3 ypc.

This should be a great game with two very similar teams and this post is really just to provoke good conversation. No need to start calling me arrogant because of my opinions. Anything could happen in this game. I wouldn't be surprised if either team won big or if it turn into a close game. Just relax and enjoy next week.

Jammer welcome to my world and that is excactly what I have been talking about. SE fans most always get very defensive when you question anything about their school. DT I really don't like wings and I don't drink therefore I will probably never step foot into b-dubs thanks for the invite anyways.

I haven't been defensive. You are the one that just trolls with anti-SE rhetoric every week. One of these next games SE will probably finally lose so you can gloat.

This thread was solely meant to lead to good discussion with WL fans and others interested in HS football leading into a fun week. The Southeast Valley players and fans are welcome to come and cheer the team on when they leave on the buses from Fort Dodge to head to the dome.

I agree, it was kind of funny. Actually, the entire thread is rather funny/entertaining in a Jerry Springer sort of way.

I'm certain both TEAMS will give it their best shot.
uzi.r191677.gif
Congrats to both for getting this far and good luck to ALL the players!

I "think" SE will win by a touchdown......but I'm biased and have no stats to back up my prediction. Just going with the TEAM from Fort Dodge!

For those wondering, my son occasionally allows me to post under his username - such a nice young man.

Deploying soon and will miss the semis and finals but will be looking here for scores and details - hopefully, without a lot of bickering . Lighten up and enjoy the game! Wish I was going.

Thanks for you service. We will all enjoy the games win or lose (some more than others). This message board banter sometimes looks worse than it is. It's all in good fun. The final four teams are all deserving to be there and I wish them all good luck.

If Saint Ed's loses I'll be regretting starting this thread though

(Usually what happens when discussing sports and the two or more parties discussing the subject are on opposite sides, one side gives their opinion, and then the other rebuttles....It's a rare occasion when you see both parties immediately agree with the position one side has made. For example, why should SE fans simply agree with others and say that West Lyon is the better team and will win? That's not how it works...normally. Unless they also truly feel that their team won't win. Like if you were an Iowa State fan and told Iowa fans that they will lose to Illinois...right now you'll probably find a lot of Iowa fans willing to agree.

SE you haven't earned the reputation that WL has yet. (Irrelevent.) That may change this week, but I believe that you will be utterly disappointed. (Of course. That's your opinion, and also the side of the argument you're taking.)

(Though, my question would be, are you in charge of whether or not SE's reputation improves depending on the outcome of this game? You seem to have knowledge of how this stuff works....regarding reputation, etc and what not.....

If the Gaels win, are they "invited to the super secret awesome team club"?.......)[/B]
Everyone keeps bringing up Madrid like they should be a measuring stick for a good running team. Who is Madrid? What have they done as a program? (If you have to ask.......)

Someone also used Avoca as a measuring tool for IKM and SE....... Look what WL did to them last year......Yikes

)[/B].
WL hammered CL/GLR in the trenches. CL/GLR rushing yards came from the QB getting loose on 2 big runs. (212 yds and 3 TDs to go along with 257 yds and 2 TDs passing. 7.3 yards per carry on 29 carries. And no I'm not saying anything, I'm just putting the stats out there for everyone to read.)
I agree that SE has played better rushing teams than WL, and I have an answer to why. The teams in WL district have great athletes and know that they can't beat WL if their bread and butter is the run game. The arrogance CP84 to believe that SE is better than CL/GLR is just laughable. CL/GLR loses this year. Heelan, SC, SPL, and SC. is a great resume. (It is a tough schedule, but there's no bowl game or 65-team tournament you're looking to make with a great resume.....It makes you better for a postseason run, but you also need to win those games for it to make any difference.)

I know SE is a catholic school so they should recognize the 1st commandment. " I am the Lord your God; you shall not have strange god before me" (What?....)

You hold O'Tool on a pedestal. (Not really.) You use yards/carry on all of your arguments except his rushing stats. (I don't know what you're saying here.)
He has 163 more carries than WL leading rusher. (Yeah?...) I believe this is why some people have been calling SE a 1 trick pony; not because they don't throw. (You believe? So that possibly means that you're guessing, or making an assumption, or at the very least you aren't 100% certain....correct?

Landon Peed was 8th in District 7 with 109 carries, second on the team, just over 9 carries a game.)
Finally.... The size advantage, which SE fans are trying to blow off because they think it doesn't matter. Well let me tell you that you IT DOES MATTER. (And I'm telling you that the truth is probably somewhere in the middle of what both sides are claiming. Sure, the Wildcats have great size on the lines. That doesn't mean that they can't be beat by a team with a smaller line, now does it. And to say "but it is much more difficult" is irrelevant to the sheer fact that it is possible. Just sayin.) WL isn't just a bunch of slow fatties. These are big, fast, strong, mean SOB farm boys that will get after you for 4 quarters. (And?....) WL will be the most physical team you will have faced. That is a fact. (And St. Eds will be the most physical team West Lyon has faced....until either/or faces Regina. Deal with it.)

I'm sure CP84 or DT#61 will accuse me of not stating facts (Nope, because you aren't using stats to make assumptions about a team you haven't seen play).......You're correct this is MY OPINION....just like you are stating yours. (All I'm doing is trying to help you with any discrepancies you may have in your opinions, or answer any questions you may have...

It just sounded like something, you know (IDK - please expand), a kid would say (and I'm an expert on that) ....that's all.

West Lyon will likely win this one. SE has not faced a team this physical since they matched up with Regina last year and that didn't end well for them. This game will be closer than the SE/Regina game last year but I don't expect SE to matchup favorably with WL.

The Messenger is reporting that Bocken (SE QB) has a broken wrist as well as other injuries to the area. Pretty amazing he played through that against SCC last Friday but will he be able to play through it against WL? Possibly not. Even if he is on the field that likely makes SE even less of a passing threat than normal.

Not agreeing with CPs analysis that, "I think we will find out who wins the battle of the line early". This could be a game where the smaller, quicker SE matches the bigger more physical WL line early but wears down when they cannot shut down the WL offense and find their defense on the field for too many minutes. I think that will be the deciding factor in this game. Can SE stop WL from moving the sticks and get their defense off the field? My opinion is maybe early but not as the game progresses.

Prediction: WL 28 - SE 14.

Prediction in the Finals: Regina 35 - WL 20.

At least St. Edmond has something to be defensive about. When you have a worthless football program, Warrior Dad, there isn't much for you to defend or talk about.

Might wanna take it down juuust a touch their, Deep....

I don't want to get into this argument, but here are my two cents.

This is going to be one heck of a game. These two teams have combined for over 8000 rushing yards this year!

The Comparison:

FDSE:

Offense: 4768 total yards / 4182 rushing / 556 passing

Standouts:

TJ O'Tool: 359 carries / 2534 yards / 46 TDS
Landon Peed: 109 carries / 715 yards / 5 TDS / 13 Rec / 316 yards / 4 TDS

Defense:

- Allowed only 8.58 points per game
- Allowed only 200.9 yards of total offense per game

Standouts:

Eric Kremer: 77 tackles / 4 sacks
Nick Hindt: 58 tackles / 1 INT

WL:

Offense: 4680 total yards / 4161 rushing / 519 passing

Standouts:

Vaughn Moser: 196 carries / 1719 yards / 19 TDS
Chase Grotewold: 85 carries / 825 yards / 11 TDS

Defense:

- Allowed only 12.92 points per game
- Allowed only 228.4 yards of total offense per game

Standouts:

Jake Newborg: 35 tackles / 6 sacks
Trevor Rozeboom: 55.5 tackles / 2 INTs

The Breakdown:
These teams are very similar in both style and stats. FDSE has a slight edge in offensive and defensive stats, but stats can be skewed for a number of reasons including quality of opponents and when teams are pulling their starters. When comparing the carries of each team's feature backs I think its fair to say that O'Tool plays deeper into games than Moser. According to bcmoore FDSE plays the 13th most difficult schedule in 1A while WL plays the 9th most difficult. With no common opponents its tough to get a read on who has the edge either way.

This game will be won up front. Which team wins the battle in the trenches will win this game. West Lyon may have the size advantage and are very skilled upfront, but FDSE is just as impressive. They fly off the ball and play down hill. I see this one being a low scoring game. Both teams will need to have guys step up. Looking forward to a good one!!!

How irresponsible is it to run a kid 48 times in a 35-13 game?

Not to mention 31 times four days prior in a 47-0 game. I hear arguments about pitch counts all the time in baseball but that's just an arm. Here, we are talking about a much more serious concern.

Not to mention, this kid is 175lbs. Yes, I realize this coach has done this to numerous kids over their careers but it is still pretty ridiculous

I got this one fellas by putting the cart before the horse. SE winter student athletes take notice: Your bball or wrestling coaches may ask you to shoot a lot or wrestle a bunch of matches. Be forewarned!!!!!! To quote Lt Kaffee from "A Few Good Men." "Should we or should we not follow the advice from the galactically stupid."

I don't see ad hominem attacks in my previous replies. I've tried to keep this discussion limited to the game. You go from blanket statement ad hominem attacks to ripping on a coach.

Running the ball is SE's primary offense. Peed contributed 17 carries in the Avoca game so it certainly wasn't all O'Tool. O'Tool's 31 carries amounted to only 55% of the total run plays.

The SCC game was competitive through the 3rd quarter so it shouldn't come as a surprise that they relied heavily on their best offensive player.

Derek Hensley for Earlham had 44 carries on 11/3 and added 33 on 11/7.

You think O'Tool's 48 carries is bad then what do you think about All State back Ryan Parmely getting 51 carries against Denver last week?

How about Matt George for Sergeant Bluff getting 38 carries on 10/24 and 33 more carries 5 days later?

How about Carter Isley for Albia getting 38 carries against Williamsburg a few days after getting 40 against Clarinda?

But I'm sure this was just an objective post from you and had nothing to do with another petty attack on SE and Tighe.

Yep, nice breakdown usfhawk.

I do think that on paper, people would look at this and think it will end up a low-scoring affair between two stout, physical football teams that play great defense and love to run the ball.

But I could also see it end up similar to the time St. Edmond met up with Aplington-Parkersburg a few years ago. SE actually passed it a lot more with that group, if you can believe it. Meanwhile, A-P attempted I think 3 passes and I remember at least 2 getting intercepted including one for a touchdown.

And while both teams were known for their smashmouth defense, their offenses were also rolling at that time as well, and it turned into a game of who could just get one more stop than the other team. A-P ended up winning 40-35.

I believe these two teams will be a bit more up to the task defensively, but I could still see it being something like 28-21.

Why is it that people on these boards won't just come out and say they dislike a team and instead hide behind stupid remarks? Karma name one running back that Coach Tighe has injured from giving him the ball too much. I can assure you O'Tool is a tough kid. On defense he gives it out as much as he takes it on offense. The kid can just plain hit people. I have seen many a player get the finger/eye test after a hit by O'Tool. O'Tool has lifted weights all summer and fall to get into the condition he is in. He can take more because when you play for a winner, you expect more out of yourself and the other players around you. I assure you any kid worth his weight in gold, is not going to refuse to carry the ball when a game is at stake.

Your pitch count theory is really smart. In Japan a pitcher is expected to throw more pitchers than here in the U S. It is a sign of strength and they are given respect that is given to only a few. They call these pitchers 'Monster.'

Again, name me one player that coach Tighe has injured from running him too much. If you can, then I will listen.

KarmaKiller do you really know what a dirt bag is? If you did, you would be using it on yourself and not trying to degrade other people because you don't like them.

I am assuming you are KarmaKiller because whenever someone gets around you, things go bad.

If all of you could stop your whining on here, that'd be great.

FDSE wins this one big, 45-21. Done.

Doubtful. They allowed Central Lyon to run for 208 yards at 7.2 ypc. SE has a better running game.

SE absolutely shut down a top 5 1A halfback in Michael Santi, holding him to 35 yards on 13 carries. Madrid has a big line on offense as well.

WL is obviously better than Madrid overall but Madrid has one of the best running games in the class.

O'Tool will go for 200 in this one barring an injury.

I will take the under on O'Tool getting 200.

Off the top of my head I cannot think of the last time West Lyon allowed a single back to run for over 200. (Can't remember a back running for over 150)

200 may be a stretch prediction but I think it could be achieved regardless of the final score. Not many single backs have gone for 150+ because not many teams they've faced rely heavily on a single back. E-berg split 36 carries between 3 backs totaling 190 yards. A fair amount of that was in garbage time.

Central Lyon split 23 carries between 4 backs for 122 yards and had a few long runs by their QB totaling 90 yards. Once again different offenses so it's hard to compare apples and oranges.

Western Christian had 113 yards on 12 carries from Ganstra.

O'Tool had > 200 yards in 6/12 games. He did not against Garrigan (35/188), Newman (7/151), Manson (37/195), Woodward Academy (18/145), South Hamilton (31/135), Avoca (31/168). He did twice against SCC, Madrid, Ogden, SE Valley and Woodward Granger. The Avoca game was interesting in that O'Tool had a mediocre game by his standards but Peed ran all over them (17/152). South Hamilton appears to have done the best job shutting him down but it opened up some opportunity passing. Bocken completed 4/6 passes for 109 yards in that game.

It's certainly possible that if O'Tool is bottled up early they may look to other options such as giving more carries to Peed or throwing a little more. I think it goes without saying that regardless of the score I'd expect O'Tool to get at least 25 carries and more than likely upwards of 30-35. It's certainly possible that WL's size creates a mismatch that SE can't handle. It's difficult to predict this game because they don't really have a lot of common opponents.

Both teams put up near identical offensive and defensive numbers passing and running. I think the game will come down to if SE have the athletes to offset WL's size. Both of the semi final games should be fun to watch. It'll be interesting to see if South Winn can hang with Regina too. They have the offense to score some points but I'm not sure their defense can stop Cook and Brinkman long enough to make it close.

What quikstatsiowa doesn't tell you is that the majority of yards gained against WL were late in games when freshman and sophomores were on the field. WL does good job of when a gain is under control to get young guys in the game. Starters played one half in most of the games this year, Emmetsburg included.

Interesting stat: OTool has more carries in a season than any player in the state since 2011.

Guys, it's high school football....it's really not that important and no need to get all worked about. I've never even heard of west Lyon and I've lived in iowa for 27 years. Better team will win Saturday then you can go back to having lives

I did mention that E-berg got one long drive in garbage time, however, it's interesting that Moser was still carrying the ball with 6 minutes left in the game already up 28-0 against E-berg.

" But with 6:19 to go in the game, West Lyon would find the end zone again when Vaughan Moser raced in from 13 yards out for the score. The kick made the score 35-0, starting the continuous clock."

I doubt they pulled most starters too soon after half as they were only up 14-0 at half.

Well you've never "played" high school football, so you wouldn't
understand where all of us high school football players that actually
played are coming from.

Only because of games played. Attempts per game there have been people leaned on more. See Parmely, Maquoketa Valley.
