Iowa Newspaper Association - All State Teams Announced

the iowa newspaper association never seems to have a clue. How do they even come up with some of this stuff?

Did I miss something here. How would Dowling, Valley have more players on these teams than Ankeny did? Belzer not making first team is a joke.

the iowa newspaper association lists are always jokes. its been that way since i can remember. the biggest joke might be hadaway from NP not making first team, especially when you see Halbur from kuemper on the first team as a pitcher instead. he should easily be above Halbur or Henke. just look at the difference in statistics.

For those of you wondering:
Writers making up the selection committee were: Ross Thede, Marshalltown Times-Republican; Matt Gengler, Missouri Valley Times-News; Jim Sullivan, Waterloo Courier; Kevin White, Omaha World-Herald; Perry Bell, Knoxville Journal-Express; Ross Eberhart, DeWitt Observer; Zachary James, Grinnell Poweshiek County CR; Mike Oeffner, Harlan Newspapers; Ashley Schable, Carroll Times Herald; Mike Helle, Knoxville Journal-Express; Scott Spurgeon, Bloomfield Democrat; Kevin Kirkpatrick, Indianola Record-Herald and Tribune; Tommy Birch, Des Moines Register; Jeremy Koenigs, Mason City Globe Gazette; and Jake Calhoun, Carroll Daily Times Herald.

I would say Alex Steines of Senior got snubbed, he had better stats than most who made it and had some outstanding performances including no hit bids where his teams defense let him down can you punish a kid for being on a poor team!

Two reporters from Carrol and Knoxville and none from Cedar Rapids, Iowa City or Davenport. How does one get on the panel?

FOR RELEASE - Tuesday, July 31, 2012, 12:01 A.M.
Iowa Newspaper
Association All-State Baseball Teams chosen
DES MOINES - The Iowa Newspaper
Association announced its 2012 All-State Baseball selections Tuesday, selecting
first, second, third teams and team captains for classes 1A, 2A, 3A, and 4A.

The four seniors selected as team captains are 4A ? Zach Coppola, Dowling
Catholic; 3A ? Tyler Peyton, Dallas Center-Grimes; 2A ? Calvin Mathews, Davis
County; and 1A ? Austin Vaske, Bishop Garrigan.
Dowling Catholic senior Zach
Coppola was named the Class 4-A captain. The outfielder led his team in almost
every major statistical category including batting average (.421), hits (53),
runs (35), triples (2), and stolen bases (19) entering the state tournament.
Coppola manned the outfield when the Maroons won the Class 4-A title in 2011. A
mainstay in the Maroons lineup, Coppola has been clocked in the 90s from the
outfield. He’ll play next season at South Dakota State.
Tyler Peyton has
been named the captain of the Class 3A All-State Baseball Team. He has used both
his pitching and hitting skills to lead the top ranked team in Class 3A into the
state tournament. The Dallas Center-Grimes senior entered the tourney with a
pitching mark of 9-0 and he was hitting at a .469 clip. As a pitcher he had 111
strikeouts in 62 innings of work with an ERA of 0.56. The .469 batting average
was tops on the team and his 35 RBI were second base on the squad. The Mustangs
were 33-2 when they arrived in Des Moines for state play.
Calvin Mathews,
who was named captain of the 2A team, is a five-year letter winner for the Davis
County Mustangs and has led the team to its third straight appearance in the
Iowa State Tournament. Mathews was named the Iowa Gatorade Player of the Year in
the 2011 season. In 2012, Mathews led the Mustangs to an undefeated 20-0 record
in South Central Conference and a 41-1 record in the regular season. Mathews
headed up the Mustang pitching staff with a 12-0 regular season record in 80-1/3
innings of work. He struck out 165 batters, walked four, and had an earned run
average of 0.70. He was also an offensive threat with a batting average of .475.
He had 58 hits, 11 home runs and 59 RBIs this season. Mathews will attend the
University of Iowa this fall where he plans to further his baseball career with
the Hawkeyes.
Class 1A captain Austin Vaske compiled a stellar senior season
for Bishop Garrigan, leading the Golden Bears to the state tournament for the
first time since 1999. On the hill, the tall right-hander is 11-1 with three
saves in 15 appearances. He has struck out 116 batters in 83 innings and has an
ERA of 1.09. At the plate, Austin is currently batting .479 with 70 hits in 146
at bats, including 15 doubles, two triples and a state-leading 13 home runs. The
Iowa Central recruit has scored 55 runs; drove in 62 more, walked 21 times and
has a slugging percentage this summer of .877.

last time i checked, a .360 batting average was not worthy of all state honors... let alone first team

No reporter from Muscatine, numbers don't always tell the entire story but some of these are head scratchers, 5 loss pitcher, .360 1st team? Odd to say the least

I know of at least one conference who won't nominate players for all-conference if kids get suspended for violating conduct rules. The unwritten rule is - miss a portion of the season for drinking, kiss post season coaches honors goodbye.

I don't believe it's an official conference wide policy, but don't know for sure. I think it's just something the basball coaches evolved into on their own over the course of a couple years. It's gotten to the point now that the head coach won't even nominate his own kids if they get caught up in a significant suspension. Personally, I think it's a great practice.

The ultimate outcome is if you don't make all-conference, you will not get conference support at the District meetings. Further - no All-District, then no All-State.

INA doesn't appear to look that deep, instead, voting for who they know locally and/or their sometimes unexplainable perceptions of performance on the field (as has been well noted above)

I doubt my explanation covers every situation, but just one explanation of how you can miss the coach's all-district while making INA all-state.

if your local paper is not on the committee then your likelihood of getting selected is significantly reduced. To think that sports reporters from weekly newspapers decide the fate of these teams is a complete joke. There should be input from coaches & then voted on by arbitrary third parties.

At the INA All-State meeting input is taken from coaches then teams are voted on. The INA makes it very clear that all coaches are encouraged to attend and participate in the conversation. Coaches need to take the time to show up and help.

Nothing against a kid making one of the teams for his pitching record...but if he is going to make it as a Utility Player, he better be more than just a pitcher if you ask me. You got a kid making 3A, third team Utility based on his pitching (10-2), but batted .171? How about a kid that batted .370, was 27-27 in stolen base attempts, flawless in the outfield and had a 6-1 pitching record in what was most likely the best 3A conference. That would be worthy of being name Utility All-State. And yes, he did make 1st Team All-Conference and 2nd Team All-District, so he should have been considered. WIth the availabilty of Quick Stats, the writer's need to take the time to research before casting their vote, not just have a coach attend the meeting to politic for their kid.

I'm fully aware of how these teams are put together & like I said...it leaves a ton to be desired. The wishes of a few weekly newspaper types have a huge say in the direction of these teams. Most coaches could care less about this & rarely do they go or even give input.

How does a kid like Michael Callahan not appear on any all state lists? The sophomore was 17th in 1A with 44 RBI's and he hit .477. His team went 18-10 and lost in a district final game. He only had 88 bats on the year due to only playing 28 games and still put up these numbers. He also had 12 doubles and was 3rd in 1A with 10 homeruns. This really struck me that he did not make the cut.

All of these post season teams have head scratchers, but none more then INA. i had a player that was a IBCA all state catcher two straight years and never received any INA honors. The way that all of these teams are selected leaves a lot to be desired. Many times i leave all district and all conference meetings wondering what in the heck some of these coaches are voting on. Many vote to strategically to get their guy on, some just vote for their buddies players while others just look at the top average. the worst thing that happens at these meetings is when a team that finishes 4th or so in the league shows up, and nominates his entire team. Id have to say if your whole team is all conference and you didnt win the league, you are a very pathetic coach.

Although it is great for these kids to get these honors i try to stress to my players that the best kids dont always get these awards, so dont put too much stock into them.

He is the best hitter I saw all year in all classes! It takes local coaches and media to nominate and PUSH them through.

Like I said, weekly newspaper writers go to the event & simply get their own local players through. If you are a good player & your local paper does not go, your chances are greatly diminished. I'm always amazed how more of this does not happen.

One problem with stats is the fact that many coaches amp their players stats. We have a couple that are notorious for it in our conference.
