2024 Soccer

Tipton knocked off West Liberty 1-0 last night. Pretty impressed with the jump forward they've made. Wins over Beckman and WL this season.

Shocked by how far Waterloo Columbus has fallen in just a couple of seasons.

Muscatine defeated North Fayette Valley in PK's. NFV has got a really good team.

What's the story with 'Northeast Iowa United' and 'Central Iowa United'? Anyone have any background?
A number of smaller schools combined?
NE Iowa is Sumner-Fred, Tripoli and Oelwein I believe and Central Iowa is Baxter, Colfax-Mingo, Collins-Maxwell, West Marshall and Colo-NESCO.

Regina again fails to close out a game it clearly controlled.

GR and Hudson in the same district really sucks but I get why.

Regina dominated that game and should have easily won. WB only had a couple of shots on goal and chased the ball all game. Coach refuses to address finishing in the final third, and it continues to cost them.
80% possession and 15+ shots doesn't win games, goals do.

Score isn't posted yet, but WB won 2-1 with 13 seconds left in the 2nd overtime period.

Curious what you think the coach should do to address their finishing?

Thoughts on the GCGR bracket. That's a tough one with Hudson.
Not a great deal for Hudson getting jumped by West Sioux but it does make things easier for the state to make brackets. Its always tough to play the same team three times but you play who is in front of you. Hudson hasn't face GR when they have been full strength so we shall see.

They got a good draw. Probably lucky they didn't have to play NFV. Most likely wouldn't have ended up with a 1 if they had lost. Not sure what to expect out of GR. I've been told they haven't played with a full team for the majority of the year. I've only been able to catch 2 matches as the girls usually have the same schedule.

I really think west liberty screwed a lot of things up. They should not be a 1 seed this year.

Mediapolis avenges 2 of their 3 regular season losses beating Danville (6-2) and Notre Dame (4-1) in the Southeast Iowa Super Conference tournament to claim the title in back to back years. Also, beat Hillcrest (3-0) at the the end of the regular season. Playing really well right now.

They lost to Burlington to open the season in double OT, the Danville loss was on the 13th or 14th penalty kick and the ND loss (2-1) was missing a couple key players including leading goal scorer.

Do they have it in them to knock off WB?

We’ll find out Wednesday. I think they have a shot, but will take their best game of the year. Qualifier: I know less than nothing about West Branch soccer. Drew will give his best coaching job though and have them ready and fired up.

CLASS 1A

4:00— (Field 9) #1 West Branch (18-0) vs. #8 Van Meter (14-5)

4:10— (Field 8) #4 Western Christian, Hull (12-4) vs. #5 West Liberty (12-5)

4:20— (Field 7) #3 North Fayette Valley (15-3) vs. #6 West Sioux, Hawarden (12-3)

4:30— (Field 6) #2 Regina, Iowa City (15-3) vs. #7 Hudson (14-5)

Congrats to Western Christian for winning the district again. Really thought this was our year to take them down. I’m not one to typically complain about refs, but realistically I think we could’ve and should’ve won 3-1 if not for bad calls (missed offside on their winning goal, missed handball in the box on one of their defenders, wrongful penalty call in their favor). But oh well, we graduate our best player in school history and it hurts knowing he should’ve been in Des Moines next week. It also hurts seeing our two biggest rivals in soccer, Western Christian and West Sioux, both make the tournament. (I still think if the state correctly paired us in WS district that we’d have qualified) but sorry for the long rant. Was very much emotionally invested this year and needed to let it all out.

I’ll still be watching the state tournament next week. I’ll probably be a big West Liberty and North Fayette Valley fans as well. My prediction is @Pinehawk’s team finally wins after their mini drought the past few years.

I hope you're right, but I think the favorite is North Fayette Valley this year. But, we'll see.
The quality of teams overall appears to be down this year compared to past years.

Top to bottom, I think this is the most competitive 1a field I've ever seen (going back to 2012. Feels like most every game could go either way.

Van Meter easily handles West Branch 3-1. Not a surprise as WB had played one of the worst schedules in 1A.
West Liberty upsets Western Christian in overtime. Didn't expect that.
NFV holds off West Sioux 2-1.
Regina cruises to a 3-0 victory over Hudson in probably one of their best games of the season.

Interesting change this year with the semifinals and finals moving to Drake Stadium and Mediacom Stadium. Which will mean state tournament games on turf for the first time.

Nice job from the IHSAA putting all of the games on YouTube for free. The camera work was good, and the announcers were great. They just need to work on their timing as the video cut off on several games prior to them being over.

DCG with an 8-1 win over Storm Lake in one of the biggest blowouts at State that I can recall.
Did not expect Assumption to defeat Glenwood 4-0. Impressive.
City High with another tough loss at State, falling in overtime to Johnston.
