Not really sure you can buy into North Linn, yet. They've beaten two sub-par class A schools. Of course, you can only beat who the state puts in front of you, but still the schedule wasn't too rough the first two weeks. And DNH seems undervalued at 5.

My thoughts, too. I’d put them in over Cascade, North Linn, and Western

Now that I got looking, iahsaa has the score from Friday wrong, has it listed Camanche winning 51-12, which would explain why Bellevue disappeared from the ratings

Well quikstats has Bellevue with the win and Camanche with the loss. I’m looking at it now and Camanche qb threw 2 tds and that was all the scoring for them

DNH is too low

I was surprised in the rankings last week that Luke didn’t have them ranked at all. 1A is gonna be a lot of fun come post season time. I’d say there’s several teams with a true legitimate shot at the title.

So, I did the consensus consolidation of the 4 polls, the same as last week and that yielded this:

1 Van Meter
2 Regina
3 DNH
4 WB
5 West Lyon
6 South Central Calhoun
7 West Sioux
8 Bellevue
9 Wilton
10 PC
11 Cascade
12 North Linn
13 Panorama
14 I 35
15 Sumner f'burg
16 Western Christian

I can't believe PC dropped out of one poll (Gazette dropped them from 4 to out after losing to the defending state champs? And then put in I-35 instead? So, the Gazette is picking I-35 over PC in District 7)

I'm really trying to find more about that PC Van Meter game - it seems like something happened but I can find any game accounts, tweets or stats. Does anyone know how wo pull single game individual stats from Quickstats? I looked at Treimer's receiving numbers and wish I had saved where he was last week, because my recollection was that he had a pretty good game week 1. So with 6 catches for 76 yards and one TD to date, it would seem he didn't have much week two, but why?

So, it's really confusing how Van Meter, consensus #8 last week, vaults to #1 and PC drops from 1 to 10 after what would seem on paper to be a quality loss. Do the writers know something?

If there's a problem at PC, it could be good news for Regina this week, but I'm not ready to crown them number 1 as some have or even 2 consensus.

Still think CNH is a solid performer. Not sure WB is really that strong, sure they put up big numbers, but against who?

West Lyon and South Central Calhoun are my teams to watch, along with Bellevue who doesn't seem to be getting much respect.

West Lyon has an enormous test this week on the road at 2A #1 BHRV. I expect the Nighthawks to get the job done, but still think West Lyon is a top 10 team regardless. A lot of juniors for them are leading the way and still figuring things out.

PC Stats from week 2:

Jungling 15-24 145 yards, 0 tds, 3 ints

Treimer 11 rushes, 34 yards; 2 rec, 34 yards

Van Meter also had 4 sacks according to their stats

Just sounds like their defense had a great game plan and got after PC.

I can't answer your questions but nice analysis. I agree with the top 5 for sure. I think I'd drop Wilton and Bellevue some more and elevate PC just a bit. We will see where PC and Regina stand after the week.

Thanks - We'll see if defense really does win championships... Most of the ranked teams playing pretty good defense so far. It will be interesting to see how the kids grow for all the teams. That's one of the exciting things about HS football; the amount of change an individual and a team can undergo over the span of 9 weeks.

Defense was the recipe a year ago for Van Meter, and I believe their kids understand that and know what it takes. They have really boughten into that concept about playing hard every snap on that side of the ball. I don't think they will have a let down defensively very much if at all this season. I want to see who can make the best adjustments offensively against them to get enough points to come out on top.

The problem with analyzing PC and Regina after their matchup, is if it's a close game, will we really know much more? A loss by PC and they'll drop out of the rankings, even though they probably wouldn't deserve it and might climb back in later. Elevating Regina after a win may not be well deserved either, unless it's lop-sided. From my view right now, it looks like at least 7 maybe 8 teams that have a legitimate shot at a championship.

I was at the VM/PC game. What happened was PC got man handled. My unbiased opinion is VM should not be the #1 team because too little sample group. Too early to tell anything really. VM plays great defense though. 3A oskaloosa couldn’t stop PC’s offense but VM sure did.

But everyone only has 2 games away so far - So, are you just not picking a number one right now?

Thanks for the info on VM/PC.

I suppose you have to pick one but does it really matter? Too much changing talent across the state from year to year to really know anything for sure. It’s an endless debate but kind of fun I guess. I just love watching high school football. Rankings based on some RPI system are flawed but I don’t have a better answer. I guess if a team goes the whole season without a loss then they will be #1. I guess my thought is, one of the two stays near the top along with West Branch, Van Meter, and DNH. Unless WB loses. The loser takes a tumble in the rankings. You are right, either may climb back in later and due to difficulty of schedule, both are likely deserving teams. The proof is always in the pudding and we will see how that plays out as the season progresses. This game is likely more important for Regina as I think they will have a more difficult time winning the district (DNH).

This will be an interesting one to watch and I think it will give us a peek at how this 1A district shapes up. BHRV is rock solid at every position. They had 0 trouble with anything Western and West Sioux threw at them so finding a weakness on tape could be tough. BHRV is definitely not a one-man show, but Van't Hul makes them so dangerous and difficult to defend.

They could really stand to have WB lose to W'burg for RPI help. But if they don't help themselves with a win vs PC it puts a lot of pressure on the DNH finale in the District.

Is Pella healthy? I read where they lost 3 starters to injury during the game last week, including all everything back Noah Treiner (sp)

They're a little banged up from Van Meter, but most of the injuries were just that night dingers that really slowed them down. Triemer should be back, along with DE, Josh Adkison

PC is still scary good. I honestly think that the Van Meter game was a case of the legendary, "PC Choke" when they play in big games, (i.e. Regina last two years in football and basketball in the Well). PC's offense sputtered early when there were some rolled ankles and dings. This week VS Regina will really show what they're made of.

Expect big things from PC's defense this week. The "Jackrabbit Blitz" (PC's fast DL) will be able to keep Regina's Ashton Cook from being able to sit in the pocket too long. They tend to be pretty good pass rushers. This will factor in, since Regina is a 82% pass team. (Van Meter only threw 10 time tops.)

This year so far Regina has 58% of their plays as pass, 71% yardage is from pass. But your point stands, passes will have to be quick strikes or the line will need to step up.

That was generous lol. Van Meter's defense is steller. I looking for a PC v. VM rematch in the Dome if PC pulls it out tomorrow.
So, if PC pulls out a win, you think the state will send them east to contend with Regina, DNH, WB etc.? If they lose, would they go west....? could they go west? Arguably easier road to the dome (no offense to an west teams, just going off the preponderance of the polls at this point.

This is a really good question. I think it will depend on a couple of things. If PC beats Regina and then beats 2A PCM next week, they will get the easier "Road to the Dome" - which would probably be west. I can see PC ending up with a 4 seed if they can go 8-1.

A 7-2 team would likely end up going east. A 6-3 team would be an almost lock. (I would put PC up against DNH or WB any day to be honest.) Hopefully any of these harder post season games would be in the Dome, and since this year's 1A teams in general look really good across the state, someone is going to be at a huge disadvantage.

Just depends on this week and next. For PC, non-district is almost more important than district. (It is looking pretty easy right now...no offense...)

Thoughts?

After two games we are already boasting that the east is better than the west. Based on what? It could be argued that the west won the last two titles...... except that it is in the past and talent changes every year. So after two games someone already is claiming the east is better. Let’s get real and let some things play out first. When you have to say no offense it’s usually because you have already been offensive. It is interesting to read people’s opinions cuz they are all over the board at times...... so maybe it’s the simple entertainment value that brings me here?! Doesn’t seem to be football prowess or rankings patience.

not boasting, not even my judgement - " just going off the preponderance of the polls at this point"

I said "no offense," because I thought it could be taken offensively and wanted to make sure it was understood that it wasn't my assessment that the east is stronger than the west, just seems to be the large part of the analysis by the guys who get paid to do this.

but, I guess you're right, nobody should comment on anything until the playoffs.

Remember everybody, the internets is serious business.

I will just say that there are a lot of damn good teams in 1A this year and several with a legit shot at the title. It will be interesting to see who goes west, but West Sioux, West Lyon, South Central Calhoun, and Van Meter are all really good teams that will be out west. I might be missing a couple more. But, it also depends on who else gets sent west. Maybe DNH gets sent that direction which adds another. Then east you have Regina, WB, probably PC, Bellevue, Wilton, Cascade can still be tough. So there's a chance for good balance once the post season comes. We just have to wait and see where the state sends some of these teams. Some of these non district matchups have been great so far and the challenging schedules some of these teams are putting themselves through are awesome and will hopefully serve them well down the road. I can't wait for district play to begin with how loaded a few of the districts are. Should be fun.

Regina may not even make it, Charles.
If they lose to PC tonight they have to run table or they'll be out. RPI is a bitxh

That's true about the RPI, but I expect Regina to get the job done tonight and come away with a huge win.
