Who you got and why? These are the games I'm particularly interested in.

Solon vs Mt Vernon
Xavier vs Regina
West Liberty
vs West Branch
Decorah vs NFV
Western Christian
vs BHRV

I'll agree but will take BHRV over WC. Where is that game played? Not sold on West Liberty but I won't disagree with you. WL has some nice athletes and WB lost a lot. Tradition often seems to win out in those situations though.

Solon should beat Mount Vernon, but it is a rivalry of two great programs. Regina vs. Xavier is a tossup, I would probably take Xavier do to the depth that they will have. West Liberty is a popular pick to push for the playoffs in a very strong district. I don't see NFV beating Decorah, they lost almost everyone, and while they have a great program, I've heard that they don't have the strongest classes coming up. Finally I'll take BHRV just because I think they will have an easier time replacing talent.

NFV will be rebuilding but I told him he says that every year. What do you base the Solon over MV pick? Should be a tough game.

Cid how's Regina looking healthwise? I heard they had a few guys banged up, one being a big o-line guy with a shoulder issue. Can't imagine they could afford to lose anyone on the O-line with Cole White already ineligible. Also heard Phillips was in a boot at the Mid-Prarie scrimmage. Any word on whether these guys are playing tonight?

A little dinged up to start the year. A couple of guys are going to play through it. Any injuries hurt on a team low on numbers

I'll be at Regina/Xavier. Both City and West are on the road, so there should be a pretty large crowd for the game tonight.

I don't know what to expect tonight. I'm leaning towards Regina, but Xavier usually is one of the few teams Regina plays that has the size on the interior line to compete with them. Regina lost a ton up front, and it sounds like some of the guys are already playing hurt. On the other hand, Xavier doesn't have Schulte nor Maliki Wilson (the kid who ran all over Regina last year).

It wasn't pretty, solid early, then it slipped away. Xavier is bigger than expected and Regina couldn't get the run game going early. It's the start of the season though

Sounds like turnovers (a lot of them) plagued the Regals?

Xavier had a lot to do with that. If you keep putting yourself in tough spots something is going to break. Regals couldn't move the ball on the ground early.
Looks like the Bears threw the ball around a bit, good to see. Hopefully they stay more diversified. Butch has always been very ground focused and it catches up eventually. Good to see.

They got pushed around by Xavier and couldn't get much going on offense. The score line shows it being a somewhat close game, but it really wasn't. If Xavier would have been able to capitalize on Regina's sloppy ball control in the first half, it could have been 40-0.

It was a pretty bad night for Regina, overall.

It wasn't that bad. Xavier broke a big run in the 2nd quarter to get on the board. Otherwise they'd had nothing going most of the first half. A late mistake deep in the Regina half cost them.
Second half was a TD apiece.
Too many mistakes for Regina to overcome. First possession fumble. Blocked punt, 40 yard pass called back on penalty, dropped snap for safety, interception in end zone, etc.

Vollestedt was the toughest player on the field between both teams.

But, they'll need to be better next week.

It seems like Regina's first game of every season is always really ugly. I know all teams are still working out the cobwebs in week 1, but I've especially noticed this with Regina in recent years. Far too many unforced errors and lack of execution.

Yep, agreed.
It sure would be fun to see West Branch vs. Solon some year.
No....no....no. Solon is on another level than WB. I'm a WB guy too(home grown). WL and WBND are as big of school WB needs to play. Big difference between talent pool at Solon and MV compared to WB

Yeah, you're probably right...

I think the quantity of talent may be the difference, similar to what we have seen in Regima vs. Xavier games. Starter vs. starter is similar but single platoon starter vs. two way starter wears a team down. Do you think the Bears would benefit from a game like that? Even with an L? I know Regina learned a great deal Friday about what they need to do to get better. If they remained healthy than the game helps down the road.

the mistakes for Regina were bad, but Xavier didn't do anything with them. Fumble nothing and block punt was a miss FG. The Even 2nd half because each team scored is a little deceiving. Regina got their one lone TD with 12 seconds left and Xavier scout team in for the last 3 minutes. Last 2-3 years it seemed like Regina could run at will, then they decide to go to the passing game and everything falls apart.

Interesting game. You can make the argument that Regina should have gotten blown out. You can also make the argument that the game was closer than it looked. Regina throwing the ball 39 times is an awful lot. Although, the end of the first half eventually dictated that Regina was going to have to score and score reasonably quickly. Regina actually did out gain Xavier in total yardage and it wasn't garbage yardage at the end of the game. The Regina-Solon game should be quite entertaining.

Being unable to run early wasn't good for Regina, I think it was 11 yards on 13 carries in the first half with the miscues hurting that total.

I agree. Although, I think it was 3 years ago I watched WB play at Regina in the quarterfinal and that WB team was certainly on another level for 1A ball. Could have beaten a lot of 3A schools that year. Wish I could be more specific as to which year it was, or players' names, but I can't recall.

I think you're talking about the Cade Jones and Bo Bowers senior year. They were leading Regina in the quarterfinal I believe

Pretty sure he was talking about 2015.
Was a good game.
Cade Jones was hurt early on vs Regina in 2012. Tried to make a go of it in the 2nd half but was nowhere near 100 percent, let alone 70.

2015 was a good game as well 35-28, Lenoch and Stenger going back and forth.

Yes, 2015 is the game I'm talking about. I remember the Lenoch name. Thought WB was every bit as good as Regina, and could certainly contend with 3A teams that year. Heck of a playoff game to watch.
