Watching some of that after the fact (saw no footage prior to returning stateside), the failures are really quite astounding. It's absolutely embarrassing.
I wouldn't sign off on a new patrol deputy who couldn't holster their weapon, as Pops eluded to. None of the pistols I saw had red dots. Perhaps that's some ridiculous USSS protocol but I have a hard time believing that the SS has a policy that requires their agents be "gun Amish."
Hair...want long hair? Fine. But when you are on duty, that shit is up and it's up tight where it's unlikely to fall into your eyes or, worse, be used as a handle by a person beating your ass.
Head movement and getting off the X. I saw some decent head movement by the agents but FAR too often they were looking in towards Trump instead of out towards the threat(s). And they absolutely failed at getting him off the X rapidly.
I've never worked a presidential detail but I have worked security for VIP's, Senators and Governors. This isn't how we trained nor prepared for it. The attention to detail was incredible...and mind-numbingly painful to participate in. We literally knew every rock, crevice, tree and tree limb, hillside, rooftop (of course), window (of course) or obstruction that could hinder a counter-sniper's shot.

This is what I would expect from a competent USSS. I’m sure some of the agents are good. But the team as a whole failed.

I wondered the same thing the first time I watched it unfold. Although we would have never seen the infamous Trump (fist raised fight, fight, fight scene), they should have escorted him out of harm’s way ASAP…shoes or no shoes!
I considered that too and the fist pump was great and I'm glad we got it.
That said, what should have happened is that the agents should have taken him off his feet to the vehicle, or whatever other emergency egress they had preplanned, before Trump had time to know what was happening.
You don't treat him there or even check him there. That all happens once your VIP is off the X. He has no time to say, "hang on a minute" which they all will say if given the opportunity. And Trump did say that, obviously.
Reagan said he believed the SS agent broke his rib getting him into the vehicle during his assassination attempt. That event was handled perfectly btw.
