Wat West was down 13-6 after the first. 24-17 at half and they led the remainder of the game. Absolutely didn't expect that result with the way Xavier has been playing and with West losing to Cedar Falls big and somehow to Crestwood by 1. I think West that needs some motivation. They didn't show up for CF and we saw the exact opposite against Waterloo East. Now we've seen it twice in a row with this result.

Muscatine 71 Dav North 57. Weiskamp went nuts... 43pts 25 rebounds 3 assists 3 blocks 2 steals

I think people are underestimating SC Heelan rather than overestimating SC East. SC East may be a little lower on the rankings, but they are not a mediocre team compared to the rest of the states best though.

Will Clapper had 23 points. He and Braydon Aker both had double/doubles.

I had Bishop Heelan in my final four picks in Des Moines....Hazekamp is a beast...

However, as we have seen already 3A may be up for grabs this year...

Agree--3A is about as up for grabs as I've seen it in many years. Records will mean almost nothing for a lot of schools. An undefeated record will mean (to me) that that particular school doesn't play very strong competition (as compared to some other teams). I think the best ratings will be one of these--1) the first rating of the year, when teams are ranked on perceived strength before all the losses pile up, or 2) B.C. Moore's ratings, based on strength of schedule and record. (In other words, in 3A it is still going to be Xavier, Mt. Pleasant, Heelan, Osky, Norwalk, and maybe Wahlert or Dallas Center-Grimes-- no matter how dismal their record is.

Agree...for instance Mt Pleasant has upped their schedule this year and may have more losses than last year. They play Linn Mar next week and have Charles City and CR Washington in January as well as Pella. I heard they did this on purpose so that they can be battle tested by tournament time.

I think that Heelan and Glenwood with their experience and balance on offense are the two top teams in 3A. Xavier got beat by Waterloo West the other night? It seems they might be down a little this year. Oskaloosa is undefeated and so is Norwalk...I agree it is pretty wide open this year but I like Heelan or Glenwood. Western Iowa is due for a state title in 3A this year.

SC Heelan 70
SC East 59

East #2 in 4A (not seeing it); Heelan #3 in 3A.

It's difficult to determine merit early in the year on I-29. They typically only play each other, so there aren't many "measuring stick" games before winter break. A loss to a strong Heelan team, at Heelan, doesn't warrant the "overrated" label for East immediately. Both schools have some big non-conference games after break. By the end of the day on January 20th, both sides will know more about what this particular game meant. Slight edge in scheduling to East between now and then, but both schools have some quality non-conference opponents (plus the 2nd meeting at East) in that time. They'll also have a full conference rotation in too. It's cliche, but time will tell.

Could you tell us something about Glenwood? I also heard that West Waterloo may be the best team they've had in years.

Waterloo West has depth, but they don't have a ton of size. They have very good balance though. I have seen them 2 times. West Delaware they whipped in the pre season scrimmage. Denver the whipped in the Jamboree.

They match up really well with Xavier.
Harris-Anderson is one of the 5 best players in the MVC and I didn't see them against Xavier, but I could see him shutting down Joens and I don't think Xavier has someone to consistently guard him. Transition he is deadly and off the dribble he is near impossible to say in front of.

Keller is only a sophomore, but he is the best post player they have at about 6'5 and he can cause some tough shots. He did pretty well against Krogmann from WD. West was quicker and lots better defensively than WD.

The biggest strength for West I believe is the perimeter defense. They have 3-4 guards who communicate and move well along the perimeter. If they can lock in defensively most teams won't be able to guard Harris-Anderson, while guarding Pepin and others on the perimeter. They are a team similar to Linn Mar. Harris-Anderson will lead them in scoring, but the key is for the role guys to be hitting from outside and them to lock in defensively.
