the states pre / season rankings

Register came out with their rankings today.

Overall these are pretty good by Register standards.

1. Hudson (13-0)

2. West Hancock (9-3)

3. Wapsie Valley (7-3)

4. Edgewood-Colesburg (10-2)

5. St. Albert, Council Bluffs (5-4)

6. Alburnett (5-4)

7. Wayne (5-4)

8. Alta-Aurelia (7-3)

9. Bishop Garrigan (10-1)

10. Grundy Center (5-4)

I can't say that I agree with all of these, but there isn't anyone that is a glaring omission and no one of these 10 that I think would be out of the top 20.

I am not sure that Hudson is better than West Hancock this year. West Hancock has all their horses back, while Hudson lost some of theirs. I guess we will see. The rest of the poll looks about right though.

I do not see Wayne being a top 10 team. I think you flip flop west Hancock and Hudson, take out Wayne, and replace Edgewood with them at 7

Edgewood is at 4

Wayne returns everyone from a winning team last year, and has one of the easiest teams. I would guess they make the playoffs easily, then lose in the first round.

Wayne has the leading rusher in the state coming back also. Not just class a, whole state so with that and being in the worst district safe bet to pick them in the rankings. Will get blown out first round to someone but will end up with a good record from a bad schedule

Yes I’m saying move Edgewood to 7th from 4th, take Wayne out and replace them with another team who is more likely to actually make some noise in the playoffs. I believe Saint Ansgar will be that team

Wayne lost to cardinal last year, who was far and away the worst team in D6, I don’t care if they bring back all 22 starters, not a top 10 team

The rankings this early are based on what schools or own coaches basically responded to the Registars or any papers preseason questionnaires and last season stats. I think Ed-Co is a top 10 team but more so 9 or 10 based on what they return, losing the older Rochford will be a big blow and tough to replace. I think Alb is NOT a top 10 team and not sure why the love for them and also Grundy Center as they have a new coach this season. I think Grundy is probably the 4th or 5th best team in their district behind, Wapsie, Hudson, North Tama for sure. Throw in East Buc and that district is brutal. The biggest omission on the list easily is St Ansgar, they are a top 3 - 5 team. This biggest change this year will be no 3 way ties in the districts so unless you win your district outright your not guaranteed a post season birth so that and the RPI still in tact will be huge. A 6-3 with a tough sched and high RPI can jump teams with a better record and not have to worry about 3 teams tying for the district title and taking a spot away. It will be a lot more clear in the next month or so.

I'm a pirate fan and would tend to agree with Trout, but considering they bring back the vast majority of their production from last year. And alot of the same kids from runner up state basketball and state baseball teams, I think I can at least SEE why there might be some pub coming their way in pre-season.

But honestly would have preferred the Pirates ranked outside the top 10. Not really a fan of any pre-season rankings . Guess it generates some interest, but whats the point?

Great insight. I agree with what you said about everything except I think Alburnett will be very solid this year. Maybe not too 10, but fringe top 10

I'm not saying Alb wont be good, I'm just saying they are not a top 10 ranked team. I think they are getting more pub because of their basketball and baseball teams and automatically thinking that will transpire into the football program for success. I think their biggest challenge other than Ed Co in their district is their own schedule as its not that tough as far as the RPI is concerned and unless they win the district that will really come back to haunt them. They could go 8-1 lose to EdCo and get leaped over by a 6-3 team with a much higher RPI and sched. If you look at D7 no way anyone come out of there undefeated in the district and if the 3rd place team goes 6-3 they will have a pretty high RPI behind it. Another team that could cause some issues in their district is Clayton Ridge, again not a top team but they do return quite a few guys up front.

Trout, you may be right for RPI. But at the end of the day, winning matters in that formula more than anything else. The pirates would like Highland to win D6. And that should be a really sneaky good week 2 game. But otherwise dont see any benefit to playing Vinton-Shellsburg, North Linn (aside from rivalry) or NE Goose Lake in non-district games. And I agree about CR, even MFL and Lisbon (if they get some QB play). i'm not saying its automatic that the pirates are 7-0 going into the Ed-co game. Anyone that experienced the last season with the Pirates would have to be a little crazy to think that.

man its nice to be talking about football again though!

Solid points. I see edco struggling to start the year a bit after losing Rochford and ultimately ending up with 2 losses. That district is not very good to begin with and I think Edco, Alburnett, and Clayton Ridge are much much better then the rest of there district

Welp so much for you guys saying Wayne is a top 10 worthy preseason team. Got walloped tonight by BGM. I expect them to be in top 10 next rankings
