For those of you who are not familiar with The End
Zone, this information is only available to IowaPreps.com premium subscribers
and mainly focuses on recruiting in both football and basketball. They are
much more prevalent in the off-season for those sports but with Signing Day
rapidly approaching, this will be a feature that you will see often leading up
until February 1st. This current edition focuses solely on football
recruiting.

One All Stater who has already set two official
visits for this month is Treynor linebacker Austin Frain. This
senior earned those elite honors in each of the past two seasons so it is not a
surprise that he has received a lot of recruiting attention. Frain will be
headed to South Dakota State on January 14th and 15th then is off to Northwest
Missouri State over the weekend of January 28th. He has yet to receive an
offer but expect him to leave at least one of his visits with an offer in-hand.

After the success that Cedar Falls had this past
year on the football field it is no wonder that college coaches are trying hard
to recruit their top players. Quarterback Ben Curran and athlete
Nate Curran
are now both looking hard at Winona State and Northern Iowa.
Being so close to the Panthers, it is no wonder that they have taken visits to
the UNI-Dome but the twins also had time to travel to Winona State late in their
football season. It is far from a done deal but there is a chance that the
two may become a package deal when everything is said and done.

The running back for the Tiger's team was two-time
All Stater Taylor Brookins. This senior dominated the MVC over the
past two years and it is no wonder that college coaches are coming after him
hard. Brookins has already received a scholarship offer from Minnesota
State and the Iowa Hawkeyes have given him an option as a preferred walk-on.
Other schools he is still considering include UNI, Northwest Missouri State,
South Dakota, and South Dakota State.

Speaking of the MVC, with Iowa City High
linebacker Dorian Davis having committed to the University of Tennessee, his
teammate Ben Evans remains a very sought after prospect. He may not
have put up huge numbers this year because of the running game but Evans can
play. He has set three official visits to some major Midwest powers.
Evans will be officially visiting Iowa over the weekend of January 20th, South
Dakota State over the weekend of January 14th, and is headed to Northwest
Missouri State on a Wednesday-Thursday visit on January 18th and 19th.
After taking his visits, Evans will then take a week and make a decision.

Another interesting recruiting saga in the MVC
conference belongs to Jayme Murphy of Dubuque Senior. This standout
scheduled a vacation in late-January that will seriously limit the amount of
visits he can take before making a decision. That vacation only allows him
one official visit, which will be taken to Northern Iowa over the weekend of
January 14th. And before leaving for Maui, Murphy hopes to make a decision
and then get a chance to relax on the beach. In my opinion, that is a
great plan to avoid the bitter cold of Iowa in January. However it does
limit his options in recruiting but also could help Murphy land in Cedar Falls.

What about the MAC Conference? The player of
the year in this conference has yet to make a decision and hopes to do so in the
next month or so. That player, Brett Greenwood of Pleasant Valley,
is an amazing athlete who I believe could be the next great walk-on story at
Iowa. After seeing him at a basketball practice last winter, there is no
doubt he has the work ethic to do it. Greenwood is still looking at the
Hawkeyes, Drake, Western Illinois, Northwest Missouri State, Winona State, and a
number of Division II schools. The question I am wondering is where is UNI?
After what he has accomplished in high school, the Panthers should at least be
giving Greenwood a look. This senior currently has an official visit set
for Iowa over the weekend of the 21st and hopes to set up visits to Drake,
Winona State, and Northwest Missouri State at this point.

The title of the best wide receiver in the CIML
conference could belong to Joel Quick of Johnston. His speed and
ability have caught the eyes of college coaches across the Midwest. Quick
has received a large variety of interest but the three schools that currently
standout for this senior include Northern Iowa, South Dakota State, and Winona
State. He would like to use all five of his official visits but the only
one that has been scheduled is one to Winona State over the weekend of January
14th and 15th.

And last but certainly not least is the MRC
conference. One of the most dominant defensive players over the past two
years has been end Kyle Bennett. This senior has scheduled his first
official visit over the weekend of January 14th and 15th to South Dakota.
Also keep an eye on Northern Iowa, who has Bennett's former teammate, Patrick
Grace, on their roster and unofficially recruiting him. The Panther
coaches will be paying Bennett a visit in Sioux City soon and that could lead to
an official visit before Signing Day 2006.

Obviously this version of The End Zone is not
completely about Class 4A. One player who was named All State over the
past two years in Class 3A has been Taylor Mansfield of Decorah. He
has not narrowed down recruiting but mentioned Iowa, Iowa State, UNI, and
Columbia as four schools he is looking at hard. Mansfield is seriously
considering walking-on at a bigger school and getting a chance to earn a
scholarship over the next few years. Time will tell where he ends up but
the school he picks will also be getting one of the best wrestlers in Iowa.

One player who has received little attention from
IowaPreps.com is Alta lineman T.J. Aube. This senior is a very
talented player and has been receiving interest from Iowa State, UNI, Augustana,
and South Dakota State. But right now, Aube has one favorite and that is
Iowa State. It is up in the air what the Cyclones will offer but if they
continue showing this standout interest he may end up in Ames by next fall.

Iowa
City Regina was able to take home the Class 1A State title and both Mike
O'Connell
and Daniel Murray have received a lot of recruiting
attention over the past year. Murray has already decided that he will be
walking at Iowa and O'Connell may end up joining him. This senior has
received an offer for the Hawkeyes as a preferred walk-on. Time will tell
if he takes the offer but it may be tough for this Iowa City native to turn down
Iowa.

Other
recruiting rumors and information. I have not been able to confirm this
but I have been told that Cedar Rapids Kennedy linebacker Mike Morio also
has been offered a preferred walk-on spot for the Hawkeyes. This senior
really was under the radar for most of the year but put up some huge numbers for
the Cougars. Also I don't have the date but Cresco-Crestwood linebacker
Kyle Slifka
will be taking an official visit in the near future to St. Cloud
State.
