The End Zone. The End Zone is for Iowa prep fans only. Whatever is said in The
End Zone, must stay in The End Zone.
For those of you who are not familiar with The End Zone, this information is
only available to IowaPreps.com premium subscribers and mainly focuses on
recruiting in both football and basketball. It may seem like a ways off
but Signing Day for the Class of 2008 is now less than two months away.
Find out which players have set up official visits, added scholarship offers,
and are hosting college coaches on in home visits! There are a number of
recruiting tidbits stocked throughout this End Zone!
Cherokee wide receiver Chris Campbell had a chance to take an official
visit to South Dakota State recently. While this senior had been there
many times, he saw a new side of the school that he was unaware of and it gave
him a new perspective on the program. Campbell has an official visit to
Iowa State scheduled for the weekend of January 25th and plans to take a better
look at NIACC as well. It appears as if he is down to these three schools
but did mention he expect other schools to pick up interest late in the process.
West Lyon running back/safety Chris Tracy had a chance to make back to
back official visits before the dead period started and enjoyed his time at
North Dakota State and Augustana (South Dakota). This talented senior
received his first offer from North Dakota State while on his trip but Augustana
told him they would get back to him on his scholarship status. He
mentioned no favorites between the two visits. Tracy now has visits
planned for Northern Iowa and Nebraska-Omaha next month and could make a
decision shortly after those trips. He is also looking at North Dakota
State and South Dakota State but is unsure if he will make a fifth official
visit. One name Tracy did mention that was on the official visit to
Augustana with him was Central Lyon, GLR tight end Joel DeJongh.
Little is known about this 6-foot-4, 225 pound tight end but he was named first
team All District as a senior. I will try to catch up with him in the near
future but he has been added to the official visitors list. An update:
Tracy spurned the other visits and has since committed to North Dakota.
Clear Lake defensive lineman Jared Sholly has been one of
the most impressive football players the last two years so it has been a
surprise that he does not hold any scholarship offers. That changed this
past weekend after he took an official visit to St. Cloud State and left campus
with an offer in hand. This two time All Stater could play with former
teammate Thomas Gruis if he decides to go to St. Cloud State. But before
he makes that decision, he has a visit planned to the University of Pennsylvania
on January 12th. Sholly wants to take at least four visits before he comes
up with his final decision.
Waukee athlete Jeff Getting had a chance to receive his
first scholarship offer of the recruiting period and that was from Southwest
Minnesota State. This was after he took an official visit there this
weekend. The trip helped move the school among his favorites in the
recruiting process. Getting is far from a final decision though and is
looking at St. Cloud State, Winona State, Truman State, Augustana, Washburn,
South Dakota State, and Western Illinois as other places he may take official
visits to. If the schedule works out, which may be hard with basketball,
he mentioned he would like to take all five visits.
The other Iowan on the visit to Southwest Minnesota State was Newton athlete
Nate Doeden. This talented senior enjoyed his first official visit
but did not leave the campus with an offer. The coaching staff plans to
further evaluate this athletic senior. Outside of them, Doeden is looking
at UNI, UNO, and Wartburg. He currently does not have any visits setup but
mentioned that he plans to take a trip to William Penn after Christmas break.
Marshalltown quarterback Tyler Peschong had already received an offer
from St. Cloud State but this Elite All Stater had a chance to visit the school
officially over the weekend. While there, the coaching staff had a chance
to talk specific financial numbers for his scholarship. One thing that
really stood out to Peschong was learning more about their offense and seeing
that it is similar to that run at Marshalltown. He is also looking at
taking visits to Illinois State, Augustana, Nebraska-Omaha, and Northwest
Missouri State. Peschong is the type of athlete who will not rush a
decision and wants to make as many visits as possible.
Mason
City Newman running back/linebacker Adam Buffington is another in-stater
who hopes to continue his football career at the next level. At this
point, it appears that this senior is looking at a number of smaller schools.
Programs like Coe, Morningside, Loras, Central, and others could be places that
Buffington could visit. At this point, he is leaning towards playing in
college so it should come as no surprise that a lot of programs are interested
in him. This standout helped his team to the Class 1A semifinals this year
as a senior.
Dubuque
Wahlert lineman Drew Davis switched his entire recruiting focus on
football during the fall. But considering the big schools that he hoped to
be there may not be around, this senior is considering his basketball options as
well. There appears to be a wide variety of options for both sports but
many of the Iowa Conference schools would love to land this senior. Davis
mentioned his favorite option right now may be going to Iowa State and walking
on with the Cyclones. He is also considering playing football at Iowa
Central and going to a bigger program afterwards.
Another
lineman who is trying to figure out where he will play football in college is
Jon Orr of Maquoketa Valley. This two time All Stater has interest
from Iowa, Iowa Central, and schools in the IIAC. Orr mentioned his best
chance to land with the Hawkeyes is likely to be as a walk on but he is unsure
if he wants to take that route. His skills on the football field have
helped him get off to a 12-0 start in wrestling this winter. Schools Orr
mentioned he hopes to visit include Wartburg, Central, and Upper Iowa.
Could the Peacocks step up and offer him a scholarship?
