I have heard many times that the senior class is
not very talented as a whole but there are a lot of players who have been
receiving college interest. Because the total number of players who can
play at the next level is small, some of these players are hearing from a lot of
schools. And by schools, I do not mean just Division I programs. I
was a Division III player and I have to give some love to those players taking
the small college route.

The big question is where should I start?
I'll take it back to the State tournament where a number of standout players
were showcasing their skills. At the Class 1A level, one of the most
recruited players in the entire class was the eventual Player of the Year,
Brian Fogelman
. This All Stater turned down schools recruiting him for
football and is looking to where he will continue playing hoops. The three
schools who are vying for his services are Buena Vista, Dana, and Briar Cliff.
Each school offers different things and that is making this a very difficult
decision for Fogelman. Buena Vista has been rumored to be the favorite but
time will tell where he ends up.

Speaking of the Beavers, with five senior starters
graduating, the team needs to continue to stock the cupboard for more title
runs. Two players who have already pledged to come to Storm Lake are
Teddy Hawley
of Ar-We-Va and Jon Millea of Davenport Assumption.
Hawley is an All Stater who was looking at a number of schools in the recruiting
process but could showcase his skills early for the Beavers. Hawley is
also a major plus in the recruitment of Fogelman. The Buena Vista coaching
staff likes their 3-men big and Millea is that. This senior stands
6-foot-7 but will need to put on some serious weight at the college level.
The plus side is that if he can get strong, he does have perimeter skills and
could be a tough matchup for opposing teams in the IIAC.

One player who might have been the most recruited
player by IIAC schools was Jake Oeth of Ogden. This senior was
looking hard at Simpson and Central before committing to Loras. Oeth could
have taken the NAIA or JuCo route but felt comfortable with the Duhawk coaching
staff.

When looking for players at the Division III/NAIA
level, it is important to find players with a big upside. One prep who has
a chance to do some damage if he puts in the work is Ryan Sones of
Laurens-Marathon. This 6-foot-10 senior recently took a visit to Wayne
State but is rumored to be down to Buena Vista and Simpson. The Storm have
struggled in head-to-head battles with BV but could things change here?

The CIML normally has a strong presence in
recruiting and that is once again the case this year. West Des Moines
Dowling proved to be a very recruited school this season and two of their
players are likely headed to college. Guard Devin Whiteley will
continue with sports and academics at Iowa State. This All Stater has
proven to be one of the most effective shooters in Iowa. Teammate David
Ferezy
may not look like much of an athlete but once you get him on the
basketball court, watch out. This senior can dunk with ease and blocks a
lot of shots. Grades are not a problem with Ferenzy as he is looking hard
at both Simpson and Central.

Although he won't be playing in the Iowa
Conference, Marshalltown point guard Andrew Peschong made his decision
over spring break. This senior visited both Southwest Minnesota State and
Iowa State over his time off and decided he wanted to head north to continue his
basketball career. Peschong mentioned that this was a tough decision for
him but a scholarship and the chance to play early was more important to him
than walking-on with the Cyclones.

One NAIA school that has had a strong year
recruiting has been Dordt. They were able to land Scott Van Zanten
and Jordan Zantingh out of Pella Christian. Both players are very
tall and could land early playing time. Two others headed to the College
are Aaron Teerink and Mark Rowenhorst. Teerink is from Hull
Western Christian while Rowenhorst is from Unity Christian.

Some
of the Division II signees that I have already mentioned include Michael
Dickes
of Sioux Center, Jonathon Thomas of Maquoketa Valley, David
Walters
of BCLUW, and Joshua Hughes of Forest City all to Wayne
State. Two confirmed junior college signings include Dion Curry of
Des Moines Roosevelt to Iowa Western and Adam Rodenberg to Kirkwood.

Two
players who have a big decision ahead of them are Dan Bohall of Sioux
City East and Brett Wessels of Bettendorf. Both made the All
Tournament team at Vets and are looking at some similar schools. Both have
been offered walk-on roles at Iowa and Illinois State has come strong into the
picture for both. With one scholarship recently opening up, will the
Redbirds offer one of these standouts or go elsewhere with their offer?

Stayed tuned as IowaPreps.com will keep users
updated of the recruiting saga for the Class of 2005.
