Apparently the Spaulding J5V is the official ball for Iowa high School football. While not every team uses it during the regular season, it is mandated by the IHSSA during the play-offs. Out high school uses it during the regular season so the kids are familiar with it during the play-offs. The ball is slick, fat and in inclement weather, very difficult to throw or catch.

All that said, does anyone know the IHSSA deal with the ball? Contract terms?

I notice most schools outside the state use Wilson GST, such a better ball.

Thoughts?

Agreed, the Spaulding ball is awful. Moved in to Iowa a few years ago from a state where we used the Wilson GST; it is a much better ball than the Spaulding. Hopefully this Spaulding ball is short lived.

Spalding has a contract with I think the National Federation, so I don't know why other states wouldn't be forced to use the spalding ball, maybe it is just Iowa, the footballs are nearly as bad as the baseballs they have to use in post season games.
