I see how Des Moines schools have to go to Sioux City to play Sioux City teams. Des Moines is in the central Iowa, and Sioux City is in the west. Since Sioux City is in the west, they should play Council Bluffs schools. Since they are also in the north, (they are really in the north-west) they shuld play Dubuque. Then no one would have to travel out of their areas. Except Dubuque isn't in the west and should not have to play Council bluffs.

Er, what?

Dubuque-Sioux City: 300 miles
Des Moines-Sioux City: about 200 miles

How is giving schools a 600-mile round trip defined as "no one would have to travel out of their areas"? Look, Sioux City is just kind of isolated, that's the way it is. Personally I wouldn't mind if Iowa would once again allow schools to play across state lines for non-district games, so Sioux City could play Sioux Falls, and Bettendorf/Pleasant Valley could play Moline/Rock Island. Dubuque schools might even be able to play Platteville, I dunno.

But putting Dubuque and Sioux City together schedule-wise? I don't see it.

It IS logistically stupid, but when US 20 gets done in a couple of years, the SC to DBQ trip will be only four hrs.......

...if school busses were allowed to exceed the speed limit by 10mph and not make a stop the entire 300 mile trip. You're still pushing 5 hrs at 65.

I would like to see the some DMS schools at least either Dowling or Valley go east in regular season play. We need to shake things up a bit and get the best in the finals.

You can drive 70-72 in a 4-lane 65 mph zone pretty much without risk of getting stopped. A chartered bus may be under more scrutiny than a privately driven car. But no matter....the trip for a Sioux City school to play a DBQ school would be outrageous. Ask the Sioux Falls schools about their (almost) 400 mile trip to Rapid City & Spearfish...the result of a huge boner pulled off by the geniuses in charge of South Dakota's high school athletics that, in addition, led to the disbanding of the old Sioux Interstate Conference.

they could move the Dubuque school buildings west, and the sioux city school buildings east to lower the travel time.

actually Wyoming forced South Dakota's hand when they forced their large schools to play an intrastate schedule. That left the two Rapid City schools on an island, so their association would no longer sanction interstate football competition. That's what led to the current travel predicament for the Sioux City schools.

We have a winner. Wyoming truly was the reason the SIC went away. And...if you're a charter or school bus driver, you're probably not going to risk your livelihood in order to get some players to their game sooner. They're missing a half day of school or you're leaving leaving a zero dark hundred, depending on game time and site.

They could do some non-conf games at "neutral sites" possibly. I have suggested this to other schools before. I mean if you don't want to play the schools in your area, do some work to set up a neutral site game. Of course it will have to be a Saturday or possibly Thursday night, but it could work. For example if those schools want to play they could meet in CF or FD possibly for a game. I realize it is still a 3hr drive for some of them. If you play it on Saturday, won't be nothing.

I have buddies who coach football in other states and trust me it isn't anything for some of their schools to travel 3-5 hours for a game. Now some of those schools play on Saturdays when they have the long road trips. I have buddy out in Washington that they have a game like 6hrs away. They leave on Friday night and stay in a hotel half way and then play on Saturday. Apparently their a larger school and the only one in their area. Have to travel through the mountains to get to some of their games.

The state of Iowa should look into playing some more games on Saturdays if they want to get some of these larger schools to play each other.

Sorry fellas, but football is about the all mighty dollar. This is exactly why Iowa rarely plays a neutral site game. What school would want to give a home game gate/concessions to play a team at a neutral sight. Also, no appeal to fans to travel 3 hours
