49-20 Solon sophs score on a pass from B Childs! That should do it. Looks like Solon will travel to Decorah (maybe the state will put it in the dome...).

This sets up Grinnell @ Clear Lake on Friday night. Should be a very good game! Don't think this one will be played in the dome this season.

Note to self: Watch the game until the end! I left the Grinnell @ DCG game when Grinnell scored and went up 28-14 w/ like 2:50 to play.... of course DCG runs the ensuing kickoff back.. 21-28, and of course gets the on-side kick.. and makes a miraculous catch after going thru a few sets of hands to get t he ball inside the 10.. and ends up 1st & goal on the 8 yard line.... and has a chance to tie the game maybe.. w/ still 2 min to go in the game (as I'm told). .but DCG throws a pick in the endzone and Grinnell takes a few knee's to end the game.. dang. good game! DCG just lacked the playmakers on OFF to make the diff in the game.. their Def played great.. but Grinnells Off just more dynamic w/ Dunne back there making plays.. the 1 TD pass he threw. geezuz.. lucky as it was.. it's still a TD.. the future is still very bright for DCG though.. so many underclassmen playing on the field tonight.. I expect good things for DCG going forward after this breakout season they had! ...

Nope.....no dome games in the quarterfinals. The Association decided this year to only allow Cedar Falls home games in the dome this postseason prior to the semis.

Heelan held spencer to 27 net yards on the ground after giving up like 350 10 days ago. Impressive to hold that running game to 27 yards. Paper said they lead 3A at around 350 a game on the ground.

Wow.. Heelan had 103 yards in penalties.. Spencer only had 111 yards total offense.. very sloppy. I hope they got that out of their system before playing Harlan this Friday..

SIOUX CITY, Iowa | A 42-17 victory 10 nights earlier certainly
didn't tell the whole story.

Top-ranked Bishop Heelan, which scored the last 35 points after
trailing 17-7 in a regular season finale at Spencer, had kept its record
spotless despite surrendering 346 yards rushing to Iowa Class 3A football's No.
1 running team.

So, it was downright remarkable that Heelan limited the visiting
Tigers to just 27 net yards rushing in a second-round Class 3A state playoff
rematch that still wound up being more tense than the previous encounter.

Clinging to a 7-3 lead at halftime and a 14-10 advantage after
three quarters at Memorial Field, the Crusaders of Coach Roger Jansen came up
with two late touchdowns to secure a 28-10 triumph that sent them to 11-0 on
the season.

Junior running back Tony Tobin had a season-high 168 yards on 33
carries, breaking tackles to spurt loose for a game-clinching 20-yard touchdown
with 6:27 remaining in the contest.

Then, as icing on the cake, Tyler Cropley hauled back a pass
interception 40 yards for a last-minute score that turned a 21-10 lead into the
28-10 final verdict.

It was the only turnover of the game for Spencer, 8-3, while
Heelan had to overcome three giveaways with two lost fumbles and an
interception.

Meanwhile, the victorious Crusaders' decisive 346-111 advantage
in total yards was somewhat minimized by 11 penalties for 103 yards compared to
just five infractions for 45 yards against Spencer.

"This game was all about our defense, plain and simple,'' said
Jansen, whose team hosts Harlan, 10-1, in a quarterfinal contest Friday night
at Memorial. "Our defensive coaches -- Coach (Jerry) Steffen, Coach (Charlie)
Curran and Coach (Dave) Hegarty -- did an unbelievable job of putting together
a scheme that the kids really believed in and they played it well.''

Facing a team averaging a 3A-best 356.8 yards rushing per game,
Heelan sought to slow down quarterback Matt Finnern and junior running back
John Greer, who came into the game with 912 and 907 yards rushing,
respectively.

Greer, who hammered out 222 yards in the previous meeting, was
limited to 25 yards on 11 carries. And, Finnern, who ran for over 1,300 yards
as a junior, was even more stymied, netting only five yards on 11 attempts.

"Me and (Keaton) Slaughter (the defensive ends) had the
quarterback the whole game,'' said Heelan standout Christian Brobst. "If he
pitched it, we were supposed to still go after him. We really took it
personally that someone was able to run all over us like that in the first
game.''

Tobin's first of two touchdowns was a one-yarder to cap an
80-yard drive on Heelan's first possession of the game. However, the Crusaders
got nothing out of three subsequent chances on offense in the first half,
turning it over twice and then having Trent Solsma's fourth-and-goal keeper
play from less than a yard turned back with 1:45 left in the half.

Spencer, meanwhile, got on the board with a 22-yard field goal
by Mark Malm after two pass plays netted 45 yards and moved the Tigers into the
red zone.

Heelan finally reached the end zone on the first series of the
second half as Solsma hit Philip Jacobson with a pass over the middle that went
for a 39-yard TD and a 14-3 lead.

However, another lost fumble late in the third quarter put the
Tigers at the Heelan 34 and a pass interference penalty let them convert a
third-and-12 to the Crusader 21. From there, Finnern found Hunter Cushman open
over the middle for a 21-yard score that made it a 14-10 nailbiter.

Tobin's tackle-breaking TD restored an 11-point margin and
punctuated a big night that sent the junior's season rushing total to 1,119 --
an impressive stat on a team that came into the game with a 3A-leading 32
touchdown passes.

"It's obvious with the passing game we have that we need the
running game,'' said Tobin. "I've got a good line to run behind, so it feels
good to step it up and do what I did.''

"Offensively, we just didn't quite get it done,'' said Spencer
Coach Jim Tighe. "They really sent linebackers a bunch and we just couldn't
make 'em pay for doing that. Our guys came out and played hard because they
knew we were going to have to if we were going to compete against a team this
good.''

Harlan's District 1 champs earned their berth in Friday's game
with a 21-18 squeaker over Carroll, avenging the Cyclones' lone defeat and
sidelining a team that finished second to Heelan in District 2.

Solon did a fantastic job of shutting down the states leading 3A offense:

The Spartans scored on five of their six first half possessions and out-gained West Delaware 267 to 36 in the opening two quarters.

West Delaware managed just two first downs and had 27 rushing yards on 17 carries in the opening half.

"All week we talked about shutting down their offense," Senior linebacker Nate Kennedy said. "We really needed to shut down their running back for sure, and we were able to shut down their whole offense all around."

West Delaware running back Coy Roussell, who entered the game second in 3A in rushing managed just 26 yards on nine first half carries.

Defense

Ginger in praising Solon's impressive defensive performance you failed to mention that west Delaware's starting quarterback was injured on the first defensive series of the game and did not continue on offense. I would think that the subtraction of the abilities of a player who has passed for 1427 yds. and rushed for 701 yds. from a high school team's offensive lineup might somehow impair its effectiveness. Might in fact allow the defense to key on another player and thus curtail his effectiveness. I wonder how Solon would have fared on offense if Jacob black had not taken a snap last night.

It was in the article that was linked from what I read.

Take Black out and put Seth in - definite drop in speed but offense would still click.

Solon's ability to move the ball and score against West Delaware was never in question. West Delaware had been surrendering 26.22 points per game prior to their matchup with Solon. My point was that Solon's impressive defensive performance has to be tempered by the knowledge that West Delaware's quarterback, a player who has accounted for over 2100 yds. of total offensive had to leave the game after playing only one series on offense. This is not a knock on Solon. They played their game and the circumstances were what they were. I'm just saying that I don't believe Solon was still playing 3a's top offensive team after Lammers was injured. Solon played great defense against a much diminished opponent.
