From today's Messenger: St. Edmond quarterback Matthew Bocken won't start. Hand injury. Receiver Robert Flattery will move to quarterback.

I wouldn't be too worried. With O'Tool and Peed still in the game, the offense should be just fine.

SE does have many capable players but this sudenly got interesting.

SCC has traditionally been a team very adept at capitalizing on the mistakes of others......just ask Madrid.

New QB, big game situation to take snaps and make the handoffs. Taking them in practice and during a game are 2 different things.

If SE makes mistakes tonight, SCC could very well win this game.

Madrid? Do you mean Ogden, or somebody, anybody, else?

Madrid put up 56 on them. Santi rushed for over 300 yds and 6 TDs. They were also the only ones to force a turnover......

Or were you even being serious?

I am being absolutely serious and I do mean Madrid. Might want to focus on the word traditionally.

SE is a team which offensively executes extremely well. A change in QB may be all that it takes cause problems. I'm sure SE has practiced the change but especially in a team with as little depth as SE, practice and the 3rd round of the playoffs are completely different things.

And to repeat myself this program has done well using patience and waiting for mistakes in big games in the past.

If SE hangs on to the ball they win......if SE suddenly gets fumblitis it's a whole different ball game.

Flattery is a junior and was SE's starting split end. He has played quarterback in quite a few varsity games during the continuous clock, which was nearly every game. He is an excellent passer, a little taller than Bocken. He is well drilled and prepared. From what I hear, Bocken could maybe play, but they want him healthy for the dome.

I don't think there's any question Flattery can fill in and do a great job....one of the strengths of Coach Tighe's offense is that an injury like this doesn't upset the entire applecart....you still hand it off to great backs behind a really good line and control the clock.

As is the case with ANY team to EVER play football.

I agree with WadeW - this will be felt more on defense.

Agree with Wade above- might be a bigger deal on defense. Gaels just need to throw a couple times tonight to loosen the defense. However, I do think this went from a 14 point game to a tossup/4 point game.

Yeah I was aware of the word. I just didn't know you were referring to games from 5-6 years ago.

Btw, this also shouldn't change SCC's game plan too much. Starting with them and every game I've gone too since their first meeting, every team's defense against SE basically looks like goal line man (for those of you who've played NCAA football video games and have trouble stopping teams from running, just throw in the good ole goal line defense and blitz everyone
indifferent.r191677.gif
). Essentially, 4-5 down linemen (sometimes more), 4-5 backers within a 5-yd box and 2, maybe 3, defensive backs. That's been the preferred defense against SE.......which averages 41 ppg (mostly on the ground).....I'm just sayin.

And I'm sure it's a little more technical than that. A lot of teams have a base 4-4, 4-5 or 5-4 defense (among others), but only against power running teams like SE will you see them stack the box so tightly (which when executed properly, makes for big plays in the passing game, should SE attempt to throw). SE was 1-4 for 28 yds and an INT in their 38-22 win over SCC. The INT set up a short field for the Titans' second touchdown just before halftime.

Could get darn interesting. Now the starting qb for the gaels in tonights game ( the biggest game of the year so far) has attempted a whooping 1 pass for the entire season. and that was in a 49 point victory. Well, I sure think tonights game will be a little tighter score than that.
someone posted " save bocken for the dome"....sounds just a little premature.
I do agree that no bocken on defense is probably more of a problem than him missing offense. ( his passing yards and rushing yards for the season aren't too impressive...and yes its because of a good running back in place. In fact I told the exact thing to Ghost this morn.
other teams have dealt with injuries, we'll just see how they do,

Does Bocken even play defense this season? Last year per Quikstats he had 25 tackles and 4 INTs. This season he only has 3 tackles and 0 INTs. It seems strange that a guy who was 2nd on the team in INTs last year is hardly a factor this season. Would they plan on playing him on defense in the playoffs if he does get healthy?

I think I will mosey on over to Dodger stadium tonight and cheer on the Titans. Most of you think I hate SE but in reality I only dislike them. I live and work in FD and work with several SE fans and their arrogance is mostly why. Anyways I will always cheer for twin lakes conference teams when they are not playing SEV. GO TITANS!!!!!!

You better buy a ticket and head to Des Moines to sit in the Regina section and cheer against SE. That's your best chance to get 1 right this season.

Here is the interesting part. It said he hurt it last week during the game.

Didn't SE win 47-0? Curious when he got hurt and if he was playing offense or defense when he was injured.

Warrior Dad, you must not be cheering loud enough for those twin lakes conference teams, because they have been getting their rear ends whipped by St. Edmond for as long as I can remember in all sports.

That goes back to the question I have Stick. Does he even play defense? Quikstats might be in error but it only shows him with 3 tackles.

I live and work in FD (been to Buffalo Wild Wings yet?) and work with several SE fans (Well there's your problem right there. Just stop working. That way you don't have to put up with people being people.........) and their arrogance is mostly why. (Oh well then that makes it okay..........) Anyways I will always cheer for twin lakes conference teams when they are not playing SEV. (Nothing wrong with that, but you've also displayed a tendency for cheering against SE, even though you "say" you'll be cheering for your fellow conference team....just sayin, is all.) GO TITANS!!!!!!

I have a feeling that it's an oversight. He's been in on tackles before last week's game and I think he has at least one interception on the year. He starts at corner. I wouldn't be surprised, though, to see Flattery assume both his positions for tonight's game. Good luck.

DT, if that's the case I would assume his impact will be felt more on defense than at quarterback especially against a passing team.

Bicker is playing . Completed 1 pass, ran for a first down. Se 14-7. ST gets the ball to start second half.

And he gets Player of the Game, lol.

A great, gutsy performance by the senior leader tonight on both sides of the ball.

Interesting situation Friday night. Coach Tighe reports to the Messenger that Bocken has not practiced all week and will not play Friday night. He does and SE advances for their second straight year to the Dome.

Congrats to the Gaels good luck next week!

The Messenger made it sound like he felt better enough on Friday that he thought he could give it a go. It's probably hard to sit a playoff game out like that as a senior.

So what is the official diagnosis on Bocken? Brocken wrist? hand?

Throwing hand/wrist?

How will this affect their passing game? ;)
