As an Eastern Iowa football follower I'll readily admit that a West Des Moines school is still the odds on favorite for a title. But, it's a really good year for football in Cedar Rapids. All three public schools are in the top 15 and Kennedy and Wash are both top 5. When you compare the production in Cedar Rapids to just the largest districts (ones with multiple high schools) the are really set a part.

I was wondering this morning, what would the atmosphere be like at Kingston if the Kennedy vs Washington game was a late season game rather than an early one like it was this year.

There's already some talk in CR about the prospects of a first-round triple header at Kingston. Kennedy and Washington will almost assuredly host a first-round game, and it's not impossible for Jefferson to finish second and get to host, too.

Of course, that would mean the first game starting at 3:00 or something on a Wednesday afternoon, so it would depend on the opponent and if they even agreed to that start time. It's also possible to hold a game at Coe or some other field besides Kingston, if all three are home teams. Kind of a fun situation, though.

I guess the other CR possibility is a double - double at Coe and Kingston when you figure that Xavier will likely be hosting a game. Better on a turf field rather than that humped mess they call a field.

One thing the state might do is give Washington or Kennedy a "home game" at Prairie, against Prairie. Be like the old days when Dowling would host Valley at Valley Stadium.

Kennedy and Wash hosted a double header at Kingston a few years ago. They'll do it again probably since they will probably win their districts. If Jefferson were to host they'd be a second place and probably have to host somewhere else. But a triple header would be a lot of fun.

Doubleheader is not as big of an issue. But if Jefferson would finish second and host also, that Prairie scenario, I think, would be very possible. Considering that Kennedy did not play Prairie this year, that could be a first round match-up if they ended up in the right spots.

I'll go out on a limb and say Kennedy/Jefferson would host at Kingston while Washington hosts at Coe. The first two schools share an AD and that would simplify his week if he only had to coordinate two games at one site.

I'm not sure where that info came from. Aaron Stecker is the Kennedy AD and Chris Deam is Jefferson's AD.

I don't think there's any way the state would make a district champion play somewhere other than their home field. As mentioned above, if a triple-header isn't feasible, Jefferson would likely have to host somewhere else, being the second-place finisher.

That's all assuming Kennedy and Wash win their districts and Jeff gets second, of course.

My bad, I was taking a quick look at each school's directory entry on the IHSAA website and must have clicked on Kennedy twice. Damn fat fingers on a smart phone.

Last season, Ankeny High & Centennial hosted a double header first round. Ankeny High was a #1 seed and played the early game. Centennial was a #2 and hosted the late game.

That's my rational for making Jefferson play the late game at Kingston if they host as a #2 seed. Now that I've been straightened out on the AD situation, it would make more sense to send Kennedy to Coe to host their game at a normal time closer to their enrollment district.

Checking the state's postseason manual, in sorting out conflicts at a site used by multiple teams, the applicable "tiebreaker" if you will is district finish, followed by head-to-head (or overall record if they didn't play). So, if Kennedy and Wash win their districts and Jeff finishes second, Kennedy gets first dibs (having beaten Wash), Wash gets second and Jeff third.

If Wash ends up second in their district ... they still get second dibs because they beat Jeff. So if there is a Kingston doubleheader for the first round, it'd be Kennedy and Wash hosting there. Jefferson will end up playing somewhere else if they are unable to work out that unlikely tripleheader.

Of course, this is all based on Kennedy winning their district with Jefferson second, and Washington finishing first or second in theirs. If the chips fall elsewhere these next two Fridays, things are different. But, again, the priority goes district finish first; if two teams have the same district finish, then it's head-to-head. Kennedy has beaten both Washington and Jefferson, and Washington has beaten Jefferson.

Chris Drem, AD at Jefferson, stated last night after they pasted Linn-Mar, that he'd be on the phone today pleading his team's case for a home game.
We're Iowa. We can't have any of this foolishness 'round here and actually celebrate an awesome football season city-wide and do something pretty cool so, Jefferson, good luck with that phone call. Good luck and God bless.

I think it mostly depends on who Jefferson's opponent ends up being. If it happens to be Prairie - well, a 3:00 or 3:30 kickoff on a Wednesday really isn't too much of a hardship for a team that really isn't traveling.

If it's a Quad City team or someone like that, then it's probably not going to happen and Jefferson will have to play elsewhere. Which is a darn shame, but wow - what a problem to have, with all three city teams at 6-3 or better and hosting the first round.
