Story of the #9-1A LeMars Gehlen Catholic versus Woodbury Central basketball game tonight. This is a bit narrative and dramatic, but it deserves it. Trust me and read.

LeMars Gehlen was beating Woodbury Central by 14 in the second quarter.

Game is in hand early, correct?

Woodbury Central finished the half on an 8-0 run including a half court heave at the buzzer to cut it down to 6.

Momentum did not carry over, however, as Woodbury Central did not score a single point in the third quarter and Gehlen stretched their lead to 35-23 after three quarters of play.

Just a few minutes later, LeMars Gehlen was up by 14 points at 43-29 with 5:21 left in the ball game.

Again I ask, game is in hand, correct?

Then, out of absolutely no where, Woodbury Central really turned it on in the second half of the fourth quarter, as they went on a furious rally to cut down the lead.

However, Gehlen still led by 5 points with the ball with 32 seconds left.

Despite it being a bit shaky, game is STILL in hand, correct?

Think again. Woodbury Central hit their free throws while Gehlen turned the ball over on multiple possessions, and the unbelievable comeback was complete.

Woodbury Central upsets #9 LeMars Gehlen Catholic 55-51.

Woodbury Central hit 11 of 12 free throws down the stretch. Stone cold right there. Impressive.

However, the most impressive statistic of the night is this: Woodbury Central finished the final 5:21 of the ball game with a 26-8 run. This happening despite Woodbury Central only scoring 29 points total up to that point. Wow.

Also, it's worth reiterating: Woodbury Central did not score a single point in the third quarter and STILL beat a ranked team. This has to give them a TON of confidence moving forward.

Gehlen finishes their season at 20-3. Woodbury Central improves to 10-13. In their only meeting during the regular season, Gehlen beat WC by 8. What a crazy game.

Terrific report, NWIowa! Anything can happen in a tournament, and often does. A new "cinderella" is born. And it shows the vital importance of nailing those free throws. Miss free throws, and the mighty shall fall.

AP was up by 16 in the second quarter, took a 15 point lead into halftime. Up by 10 in the 4th quarter, DNH came all the way back and took the lead with under a minute left. AP's big man Nick Ellis hit a 9 foot shot with 3 seconds left to win it. Sounded like an incredible atmosphere

Lawton Bronson defeats Remsen St. Mary's 49-46.

It was upset city in Class 1A district 16 as the 3 and the 4 seeds beat the 2 and the 1 seeds, respectively.
