Iowa scores from the Wendy's Classic--Western Dubuque 56, Waverly- Shell Rock 52. Great game at Loras College. Two evenly-matched teams. The difference was Spencer Haldeman who knocked in 25 for the surging Bobcats who are getting closer to the Top 10 in 4A. I was very impressed with Waverly, and when they have 6-11 Davon Beckert in the front court with 6-9 Austin Phyfe, they are massive. Jake Velky is a heady floor leader and had 18, Phyfe 15. I hope the Go-Hawks don't fall very far in the ratings because they are a solid, premium team and still have a good shot at the state title, I think, despite their two losses this weekend. The biggest crowd at Loras was for this game.
Dub. Hempstead 75, Marian Central Catholic (IL) 72. The Mustangs, now 11-1, were led by their guard duo of Robert Duax with 25 and Martell Wilson with 22, as Marian missed a three at the buzzer.
Dub. Senior 53, Naperville Central (IL) 46. Luke McDonnell played very well and had 23. The Rams looked a little tired after battling Iowa City West last night, but this was a good win against one of the largest schools (enrollment-wise) in Illinois. Senior's freshman, Justin Blackmon, hit some big shots.
Dub. Wahlert 76, Bartonville Limestone (Peoria) 59. I thought Wahlert played one of their best games of the year, minus three players due to injury (including starters Pemsl and Till, neither of whom suited up). Nolan Timp led the Eagles with 24 and Josh Carter added 22. All three Illinois schools seemed about equal to me, although the center for Bartonville was outstanding. By the last game I was bleary-eyed.
