Just got an email from the IHSAA regarding rules changes for football for 2017. The biggest involves blindside blocks. As I read it, it basically forbids them all. Too much to type, probably just easiest to READ THE LINK.
Looks like some other changes too, but nothing they touched on much for now. I

There expanded list of defenseless players is ridiculous and going to make it awfully difficult on refs this upcoming season. Every play you'll have one coach yelling at you if you make a call and another coach yelling at you if you don't. I'm especially baffled by the player in the act of or having just thrown the ball... I guess you can't ever hit a quarterback anymore

Agree. Is a kid supposed to stop his momentum when he sees a QB getting ready to throw? If I'm a QB I keep my arm up like I'm throwing and then run the ball. Can't touch me. What a ridiculous rule.

What do you think of having a contact official? All he does is follow the action and look for levels of contact. You could even put him in the crow's nest with an Ipad. I know that may sound crazy and I know it's tough getting crews as it is but maybe the older ones thinking of hanging it up would go for it and extend their careers. You could have them not be associated with a crew as much as an area to reduce travel and they would make calls down to the field when necessary. The guys on the field could still make those calls as well but it would not be their primary focus. I know it's out there a bit but what do you think?

They should change the rules then so that QB's can't run. They can only pass and make handoffs.........
