Strudthoff has been battling an ongoing ankle/foot injury throughout the postseason that he sustained in the last regular season game against Colo-NESCO. His explosiveness just isn't quite there and with good reason, it will be interesting to see how he performs this Thursday. When healthy, he's without a doubt one of the top backs in the state. I'm hoping he will continue to heal like he claims he has been and play four quarters against Newell-Fonda. If not, Nate Van Buren and Wade Van Otegham will fill in like they have been and they've been rather quiet but have still managed to get the job done for the Warriors.
Dalton Kriegel has really stepped up with the absence/limitations of Strudthoff in postseason play. He possesses very good top-end speed and gave Janesville and Central Elkader fits in the past two games. He is also capable of throwing the ball as well. Throws a very pretty ball with nice touch.
The man to watch for the Warriors without a doubt though is #28, Louis Kriegel. In HLV's three games against top five teams (Don Bosco, Janesville, Central Elkader), Kriegel has registered a combined 41.5 tackles, eight of which have been for a loss. He's got a motor that never stops and he's making me look like a genius since I've been saying since his freshman year that he was going to be a star.
Up front, HLV has some good size on the O-line that features three juniors in Ben Lahndorf, Aaron Border and Ed Henning. All three are 200+ and do a pretty solid job. Like all lineman at all levels of football, they have a tendency to miss some blocks here and there but that's just football.
This HLV team is a team that brings a lot of enthusiasm and energy to the table. A very exciting, hard working group of kids that definitely has earned the right to be in this moment. Coach Smith has the boys playing their best football of the season at the right time and I hope that trend continues Thursday against Newell-Fonda.
Best of luck to Newell-Fonda, Marcus-Meridan-Cleghorn, Fremont-Mills, and most importantly my HLV Warriors
