New Playoff Format?

.....sure hope those #4 seeds enjoyed their cupcakes and lollipops after getting their participation ribbons. I bet the association didn't even offer to pay for them.

On a serious note, those games never should have been played. Give the #1 a bye. Let three teams in not four. These games are almost exclusively blowouts and tell us again (for gate money) what the regular season already told us. The #4 were not playoff worthy.

If you are a #4? You love this. If you are a #1? I doubt too many would not opt for bye and play in week 2 of the playoffs instead of playing these games against #4 seeds where it is so unnecessary. I would love to have one coach of a #1 seed in the state say they actually favor and would rather play a #4 seed over getting a bye in the first round.

How many teams scored over 50 points or more in what we call *cough* playoff games? I wonder if the team that played BGM enjoyed their evening and would be all over doing it again?

No Justice, let me know if you want any specifics. I have the averages on a class by class basis, excluding 8 man, excluding 4A, and just 3A-A. Only for #1 vs. #4 games.

#1 vs. #4 All Classes
(47-1)

Average Game Score*
43.1 to 10.8

*That is #1 vs. #4 not winning score vs. losing score.

Top 5 Biggest Margins:
BGM by 77
EHK-Exira by 65
Iowa City West by 62
H-L-V, Victor by 60
Valley by 56

Top 5 Smallest Margins:
Beckman by 1
Lisbon by 5
Harlan by 6
North Fayette Valley by 9
Sioux Center by 11

Thanks Cardinal. Good work. Average score #1 vs. #4 -- 43 to 11.

Even THAT point differential, as telling as it is, is NOT the whole story. It is actually worse if you really compared the teams in how they match up. The #1s did not play starters throughout the entire game. They put in JV and freshman teams at some point in those games. If starters in all the #1 vs. #4 teams played the entirety of the game w/ not subs in the first round of the *cough* playoffs? Both sides of the 43-11 average would change. I bet it would be more like 60 - 6. If not worse.

If setting the plow as deep as it is in that 4 teams qualify for playoffs, it sure has not done anything but be an exercise in futility when it comes to meaningful match-ups. Show me the money.

This talk of everyone getting into the playoffs and having a shot at the title is nonsense. Everyone already has a shot at the title. Just win your district games like you are supposed to.

You and I agree completely on this. The regular season should have meaning be respected. Being a playoff qualifier should be earned. The plow is set too deep and has taken the sheen off of what it is to be playoff qualifier.

Average for Class A specifically was 46 to 10. That's averaging the continuous clock in a playoff game. In reality 50% of #1 vs. #4 for all classes ended in continuous clock. This does not include games such as West Lyon getting the continuous clock and then the other team scoring on back-ups to bring the total back within 35.

There are 64 teams in 8 man. 56 teams in class A thru A3. And 48 teams in class 4A. In my opinion there are to many teams in the 4A playoff system. If they are going with 32 teams in the playoffs in 4A they might as well go with a tournment schedule and allow everyone in using the 9th game as the first tournment game. Either that or go back to the 16 team playoff. They cater to much to the larger schools.

In the other 4 classes I think it is a toss up.

But I think the present playoff system works well for the 8 man system and it's larger number of schools. I reall think that it would work great with the larger class if they would go to the top 64 schools in the state as the 4A class. Adjust from there. Way to many state champs anyway. Starting to get like 4 H up on the top level. Everyone gets a blue ribbon
