It's finally here! After three years of that brutal deal that didn't allow half of the state to watch the state championships, IHSSN is on the verge of a different deal. I hope they learned their lesson. Here is the Des Moines Register article.

I think the obvious move would be IPTV. Keep it simple. But I also think that it is ridiculous we have two governing bodies for high school athletics. Thoughts?

IPTV is stretched enough with the girls' championships. As of a couple years ago, they didn't really want to take on extra sports programming. Plus, there would be some overlapping event issues to hammer out, unless you want to give up the football semis.

It says that the current contract was over after basketball and nothing will be finalized until next year, what about baseball, that has been televised for the last few years.

I also think you will see it back on on local stations like it was a few years ago. Most if not all have sub channels that they broadcasted the semifinal games on and the title games on their main channels.

Baseball has been streamed, not "televised."

Football, hoops and wrestling were the TV sports.

You are right, but I can remember KCRG out of CR putting it on their 9.2 channel.

I like that our State is making this way more difficult than it ever needed to be simply because of money.

It's like having to choose between eating a spoonful of ice cream....or a spoonful of cinnamon sprinkled with hot sauce.......and you choosing the cinnamon because you like torturing yourself and watching other people judge you for it. o_O

Most people, and I do mean most, just don't understand that avoiding unnecessarily stressful choices is a feasible option in the real world (and there is plenty of fun in doing that).......................

You're welcome.

Actually, the way football has been handled has been perfect because anyone living out of state also had access as it was on satellite tv. All you needed was the sports pck subscription.

Is this really true? I suppose with satellite there might have been a way, but there were an awful lot of people in the western half of Iowa who said they didn’t have access - at all - to NBC/Comcast Chicago.

I mean, asking somebody to get satellite just to watch high school football for two weeks in November is asking a lot. That’s what the IHSAA was doing, telling western Iowans outside of Chicago Cubs territory, “Your cable doesn’t offer Comcast Chicago? Sorry about that. Better shell out for satellite, suckers.”

Sure is true, in the middle of the IA semifinals my cousin called me from a bar in Chicago saying she’s watching the game.

That's what Krogman/IHSSN was doing. He and NBC Chicago tried to say that they offered the channel to cable companies in western Iowa. However, the cost/terms were so ridiculous that no cable companies wanted to take the financial hit or jack up their customers' rates to cover it.

Good point, more accurate to call out the IHSSN. The IHSAA was too busy counting the money the IHSSN paid them to care about the details.

Well, it may seem like a trivial thing, but the fact that those are two separate entities is a key distinction that often gets lost in those debates.

I look at it this way -- if I sell you a car, I don't get to have a say in what you do with it because I no longer own it. Sure, I could care that you later chopped it and sold it off for parts, but I don't get to tell you not to do it.

If you have direct tv with a sports pck subscription then you were able to watch for free wherever you lived. Can’t speak for dish but would think that would have been the same. That’s the easiest way to reach the most out of state while getting exposure for the athletes as well to an unprecedented national audience. Also, a large number of cable subscribers would also have had access with a sports pck subscription. As for the rest, wasn’t there an online subscription option? If so, that gives everyone access while hitting all 50 and getting the highest exposure for athletes.

There were online options for preliminary rounds of hoops and wrestling. But for the stuff that aired on NBC Chicago, you couldn't watch online unless you already had access to NBC Chicago.
