***** IN GAME THREAD - Cedar Rapids Kennedy vs. Dowling *****

Don't know exactly why, but in the last decade or two, the West Des Moines teams, Dowling and Valley, just seem to be at a different level than other teams. Game has a half yet to be played, but this seems like no great surprise. Watching it on IHSSN, Dowling has much more size and power running.

41- 10 with about five minutes to go. 11 state championships in the past 15 years for Dowling and Valley. Wow.

I'd say after watching that play posted above that it's more than just athleticism. That's pretty creative and I'm wondering what was going through Kennedy's minds as it was happening??? Everybody just pick a guy and stick with him!!!!!!!!!!!!! The QB did take a hit and just got off the pass though, it was right to the receiver that was left alone by the defender who blitzed. Looked like what Iowa pulled on Purdue last weekend only a lot more movement to confuse the defense prior to the actual play.

Title Game Scores
2013 Dowling 44, Xavier 13
2014 Dowling 49, CR Wash 14
2015 Dowling 41, Kennedy 10

Dowling's talent the last three years has been unbelievable. You'd think after one of these years it would dip a little but it hasn't. Congrats on another title

You really could make a case that any of the final four in the west wins that game last night. If Kennedy really was the best in the east....they are 4th at best in the west.

Let's face it, Dowling could have easily hung 60-70 on an undefeated CR Washington team last year....with valley...on most years they are just on a different level than anyone else in the state.

you are being nice, Kennedy does not beat any of the west final four ( Dowling. Valley, Johnston, Lewis Central) and you possibly could add the final 8 ( west teams).

you don't have to be a jerk. I mean it's not like Dowling had a real close game in rounds 1-4. My guess is that they would lose to valley and johnston in a close game and beat Lewis Central (who probably could have gotten fifty pointed had they not pulled the starters).

Dowling dominated almost everyone they played towards the end of the year. I think Kennedy could compete with anyone else in the state this year. I don't buy those other west teams getting the benefit of the doubt when Dowling beat them handily as well

If being honest is being a jerk then call me Mr Jerk! I stand by me earlier comment, the west is far superior

I watched Kennedy quite a few times this year. Those fumbles were mistakes that they didn't make all year. Without those, beating Dowling still would have taken a heck of an effort and some good breaks, but you would have seen that kennedy did as well or better than most of the teams Dowling played.

Dowling is superior to everyone in 4A. A completely different beast. I understand that teams in the west want to throw around they are better than the east because with Dowling in the west they'll never have an opportunity to play in the title game, and a team from the east will. Fact is that no one in the west is at Dowling's level either. The advantage of the west is that they have an opportunity to play Dowling annually so their players see that level of play.

Around Cedar Rapids we don't see the all-star team in our area like you do in Des Moines with Dowling sucking great players out of a pile of schools. Lombardi recruited some kids when he was around, but in general the 5 metro 4A teams and Xavier play with their own kids. It does lead to a fun season with competitive games all around.

For the record I'm not on the bandwagon of ripping on Dowling. If a kid wants to go win a title so be it, nothing wrong with it. But, we can all acknowledge they have much different ceiling than the rest of 4A.

Well Mr. Jerk, can you enlighten us with some information that indicates that the top 8 teams other than Dowling in the West would beat Kennedy?

go back and re-read cid.. I said 4 or possibly 8 which would include Dowling... not Dowling plus 8. It's just a matter of opinion that can't be proven or not proven without playing the game.

Like many I watched a ton of games this year, more on the west side then east, it's what my eyes tell me. After all much of this site is opinion and not fact based.

Definitely the case on this site. I was just checking to see if there was a 'Team X led Dowling until the half' or 'outgained Dowling but had some key tunrovers' or 'took Dowling down to the final play' was just seeing if there were things like that which would lead one to believe that 4 or possibly 8 teams including Dowling would have the clear advantage, obviously Dowling had the very significant advantage.
I was talking to a Kennedy supporter and he told me that Dowling had 9 starters that weren't in the school 2 years ago and had 41 zip codes in their school directory, sounded like sour grapes but isn't anywhere close to accurate? I want to tell him to zip it if he is wrong.

I completely agree with what woodsiding said above. I think these last three years it has been more of a case of Dowling simply being the dominant program throughout the entire state regardless of east or west (I know Valley did beat them during the regular season last year). I think they're on a whole different level compared to anyone else in the state.

I don't want to turn this into a big recruiting argument again but as cid hinted at I would just be curious as to how many of the players on Dowling's team have been there throughout their entire high school career. I know cid has backed up the argument against Regina recruiting with facts about how most of the kids have been together since elementary school. I think it's more that kids in the area want to go to Dowling to win and possibly get more exposure and that's fine. It just seems that their talent the last three years has been staggering compared to everybody else.

Somewhat familiar with Dowling and yes Urbandale took them to the wire and could have won, if I recall they lost by 1 point and Waukee lost by 7. I also agree it seems they do get a lot of guys playing as 1 year starters/players. I saw them play 4 times this year ( 2 times in person) and the team at the end of the year was so much better then the team that played the first 1/2 of season... my point is they must have really good coaches as well as players. In any event give them credit but unfortunatley it sucks for everyone else trying to compete with them year in and year out.
