Friday Night Scores & Comments (Feb. 2)

In what has to be their best game of the year Regina blows out top district seed Camanche 73-34.
Very impressive.

The IHSAA site is down right now, so I'll try to get scores from other sources until they are back up.
Amazing night for Joe Weiskamp of Muscatine, even tho Bettendorf is down this year. He had more points (55) than the entire Bettendorf team!. Carton 24 for Bett.

Watched the Dubuque Wahlert vs. 4A #10 Dub. Hempstead game. Wahlert led 53- 52 with 1 second to go, and the Mustang's Keith Johnson hit a long shot at the buzzer to win 55-53.. Johnson finished with 20. 4th game this year in which Wahlert led a good 4A team in the fourth only to lose a heartbreaker.

I'll hunt for more scores.
North Scott 66, Dav. West 50
Norwalk 60, Oskaloosa 56 Must have been a great game.
DM Hoover 84, DM East 19
Johnston 54, Marshalltown 51
Dav. Assumption 61, Dav. Central 49
SC West 68, SC Heelan 44
CR Xavier 72, CR Prairie 65 at Prairie.

Weiskamp had 54 of 64. Carton had 24 of 50. Combined 78 of 114 points. At one point they were combining for 75% of both teams points. Helps when Weiskamp scored the first 31 points himself.

He is in my opinion the best offensive player to come out of Iowa ever. Teams strictly plan to slow him down and we have seen all season how little that has helped. Foulk is a decent role player, but without Weiskamp Muscatine is in the bottom 3 or 4 in the MAC and only beating the other bottom teams.

North Scott with a solid bounce back win over Davenport West. After struggling the last few games and battling with West early they exploded for a 29-1 run en route to a 66-50 win. They started to find the outside shot and that is a key to them being successful in the post season. They will stay in games with the ability inside the arc, but win big games only if they hit from outside.

Davenport North with its biggest in since the early 2000's when they went to state. Beat #5 Pleasant Valley 57-45 tonight. They beat North Scott a few years ago, but this one felt different than past wins. They controlled the game throughout the second half. Lacey Watson got them going scoring 12 of 14 in the first half including 2 deep 3's and a strong drive and slam that built up a lot of momentum. The 3rd quarter was Max Taylor taking over and extended North to a 12 point lead a few times. They didn't let PV get within 6 points the second half. Taylor had 16, Watson 14, 6'11 Jared Beck added 10. The defense is starting to become superb and the offense continues to improve. When you have 6 guys who can get 10-15 points each game you can manipulate match ups. PV coach Steve Hilmer compliments Watson in Matt Coss' QC Times article as a "D1 basketball player"

The MAC is back up for grabs after the North win. North Scott and Pleasant Valley have 2 losses each. Davenport North and Muscatine are tied for 3rd with 5 losses each. Davenport West and Davenport Assumption are tied for 5th with 6 losses each.

North Scott holds the better schedule as they get Dav Central who they barely beat first time around, but only have 3 wins on the year. Dav North who will a tough matchup with Watson now available as well as others being healthy. Burlington who hasn't won yet and Clinton who has both wins against Burlington.

Pleasant Valley has 5 games left with Ft. Madison, Bettendorf, Clinton, Dav Central, and Muscatine. Bettendorf, Dav Central, and Muscatine could all potentially be challenges.

PV beats a team by 12 that 3A MP beats by 40???...maybe PV is extremely overrated??

Or... They just played 3 Top 5 teams in the conference and had no time to do film on FM. They aren't a team designed for high powered offense, so a 12 point lead for them is more like a 20-25 point lead. Dayman scored 24(season high), so I am guessing Duwa and Snyder were struggling. Confidence may be lacking for Snyder after North held him to 4 points the night before and face guarded him.

Fort Madison beat Burlington by 17... PV beat Burlington by 34 and 43(Score was 39-3 at half) if you want to do score comparisons.

MP had wins of 24 and 32 against FM who is a conference opponent that they would have done film on since they are one of the top teams in the conference.

Thanks...it was more of a question than a stab at PV...do they still play that slow down half court offense?

Comparison scores don't always mean that much; different time, different conditions. You could probably make a case that Bettendorf, 8-9, is the best or second-best team in the MAC because they have Carton, and almost beat this team or that one. The MAC for sure is very balanced, but according to the latest B.C. Moore power ratings, the MVC has five teams in the top ten in 4A and the MAC none.

Yes they do. Them and North Scott will play hold the ball offense if they have more than a 6 point lead in the second half. They played 16 players against FM, so I'm going to say Coach Hilmer was focused on keeping his main guys fresh and ready for next week rather than winning a blowout.

Right now the power in those rankings is due to CR Prairie beating Muscatine by 7 and North Scott by 10 as well as Wahlert beating Assumption at the beginning of the year. When the MAC has 3 losses to teams with losing records in the MVC it doesn't help.

I really don't think those rankings hold much weight, because I think this is one of the most wide open years I can recall. I wouldn't be surprised if 2 MAC teams make State and 2 MVC. I wouldn't be surprised if MVC had 4 teams and MAC none. Linn Mar and Prairie can beat anyone if the shots are falling. The MAC could be argued as the worst 3pt shooting conference or best defensive conference. Dav North is the only team averaging over 60 Points per Game.

Judging by the stats from CRP and LM I would say defensively the MAC is good against the 3pt shot, but LM and CRP got to the line and hit FTs against Bettendorf, North Scott, and Muscatine. CRP only managed 5 FT attempts in the loss to Dav North though.

Good points, maxstabs13. I do think the MAC is strongest it's been in a couple years, and they are certainly balanced. The main strength of the MVC is in IC West, Cedar Falls, Xavier, Hempstead and Senior, with a whole bunch of teams following in the middle, like Prairie and Linn-Mar. I am happy to see the resurgence of the Davenport schools, especially North and West. There is so much balance in the state this year that the districts, substate and finals are going to be exciting, to say the least.
