Friday Night Games, Aug. 31- Scores and Comments

EasternIowa any clue why that game between Williamsburg and WST DBQ got set up? That is a weird one to set up. Expensive to travel to. Not at all similar traditions. Just an odd game. Especially since West DBQ is right on edge of 4A. Would think they would play DBQ Senior or something.

SC Heelan 21, Glenwood 7

SB-L 34, Harlan 32.....SB-L scores winning TD with seconds left after trailing 20-0 early.

Makelovenotwar-- To answer your question, I think it has to do with scheduling difficulties with Western Dubuque bouncing back and forth between 3A and 4A several times recently, and some former opponents have to schedule new teams in their districts. Also, wasn't 2A Williamsburg ranked as high as top ten in their class at one time earlier this year? I thought I heard that on the radio. Maybe I'm wrong. If Western Dubuque this year played the Dubuque public schools, they would still be favored by quite a bit, I believe. It's not as if WD is a perennial powerhouse; they just happened to be loaded this year with terrific athletes. An article in the local newspaper stated that there were so many big kids on the line that they had trouble finding enough uniforms with the proper numbers early on. And the reason that some of their rural county rivals (Beckman, etc.) are down is that perhaps more and more better athletes are heading for Western Dubuque in the lower grades. I am not an expert on WD football, however. Some of the blowout scores in 4A and 3A are just as much because the loser is extremely weak, and the victor is having a good year. CR Prairie over CR Washington raised eyebrows last week and then the next week 0-1 Dub. Hempstead beats Wash by 40. CR Wash is perhaps as low as they have been in recent history, with major lack of experience and a number of kids "out" for various reasons, including discipline. And Hempstead plays seven sophomores on the varsity, including both quarterbacks, so they are very young, and relatively low in numbers.

TJ plays "hide and seek" with the football on offense and they do it well. Baker is really a good football player( running back) but what I hear is he is being looked at as a linebacker in college. Very sportsman like for the coach to take a knee at the end so TJ didn't hit 100 Lol

Obviously a lot of football to be played; but it seems that Lewis Central and Xavier look to be heading towards a championship game collision.

i did not see the box score of the lewis central game,,,but i suspect duggan to simmons happen a lot....they are a deep ball threat this year...i dont believe anyone in western iowa will beat lewis central, unless heelan can do it.. unless some other team pulls a upset....coach duggan (lewis central) has turned lewis central into a formiable foe , maybe the new kid on the block now

denison beating al by 42 -7 was sort of a shock to me, al is 3 times bigger than denison

You are spot-on about Duggan. He really is in football mode 24/7. He is no-nonsense, and was a D1 quarterback who married a D1 track star. They are both very humble about son Max's success. A.L is a mess. No reason for that product on the football field. No buy-in. Hopefully change is on the way. Great track athletes at A.L. and Hoops is
a way different story. I don't believe Heelan will beat LC-they are on a mission this year. Biggest challenge they(L.C) will face is if they don't really get tested before the dome.

I'm interested in opinions. Is football down in Western Iowa this year -All Class? I just don't see any teams to get very excited about. I will think a certain team will be salty and then they struggle. Yes Lewis Central is having a good year, but who else do people feel can head to the dome from the Western side of the state? I don't feel LC is a lock btw, but they are off to a good start. Thoughts?

I agree no team is a lock, that's why you play the game. However, with that being said... with no injuries I would say LC is the closest thing to a lock. Duggan is one of the most intense competitors.

Heelan is going to be a real threat to make a deep run. They are solid all around. Seems like the new coach is rallying the guys around the rich tradition.

Sergeant Bluff is salty, from what it looks like they are getting better after their week one loss. They're running back is a stud. They'll be a tough out.

Harlan, you cant speak about Western Iowa football without mentioning them. They're down this year, but will be poised to make run at the end of the year as always. I wouldn't want to play them.

ADM and Glenwood, not sure what either team is made of, but they seem to be similarly good.

lewis central was tested the last 2 years in 4a, ..with many of the same players on the team yet...they will not be itimidated in 3a....i think heelan and sargent bluff might be close game....still believe lewis central a step above everyone in western iowa, the compettion will come the east end of the state

Well, BCMoore Rankings has 4 Western Iowa schools in the top 5. I guess that answers that question.

Mod = modified ranking

R Team Conf ( W- L) Mod Str Sched Rank Off Ave Def Ave
1 CB Lewis Central 3A-9 ( 4- 0) 136.04 4W 84.41 ( 25) 49.75 ( 1) 7.00 ( 4)
2 CR Xavier 3A-4 ( 4- 0) 129.30 4W 90.51 ( 14) 45.50 ( 2) 5.50 ( 1)
3 Sergeant Bluff-Luton 3A-1 ( 3- 1) 116.84 3W 112.75 ( 1) 29.00 ( 14) 23.75 ( 32)
4 Sioux City Heelan 3A-1 ( 4- 0) 115.59 4W 84.29 ( 26) 30.25 ( 12) 6.75 ( 3)
5 Harlan 3A-9 ( 3- 1) 114.84 2W 87.70 ( 19) 43.00 ( 4) 15.25 ( 12)

So 3A football is down state wide. Besides CR Xavier on the Eastern side of the state, I don't see anyone else in Western Iowa that can play with LC. #3 SBL was punished by nearly 30 pts by LC, SBL then spotted Harlan 20 pts and came back and beat them. I guess the Wild Card could be Heelan, although I believe they just slid by a marginal Glenwood team in a game that featured 8 turnovers between them-
