That Pella - Osky game was one of the ugliest I have seen in a while. Pella with 13 penalties, Osky with 11, both teams had upwards of 200 yards in penalties.

Pella is a power rushing team this year. Totally different offensive look than last year. Defense looked very tough. D-line and LB's dominated the line of scrimmage.

Dub. Wahlert loses tight game, 12- 10 to 4A Western Dubuque as the Eagles had no defensive answer for the Bobcats' passing game. Western Dub. outstanding QB Quinn Baumhover during one stretch ran the same passing play successfully six times in a row, while Wahlert was a dismal 2-15 passing for the night.

SC Heelan beats SC East, 41-14 at Olsen Stadium. Clark went for 260+ yds on 25 carries as Heelan rushed 74(?) times for 434 yds.

lewis central 31 harlan 21
harlan was serverly handicaped in this game, starting qb was out with a broken finger, looks to return 4th week of season...the 2nd team qb did good, but threw 3 intercpetions.....harlan was also without 4 other starters on offense to various reasons, and will return soon....otherwise this game might have been very close....lewis central is loaded this year, some studds on that team

Not sure where you got your information from but I am not sure they had 5 guys out. I know the QB is out but the backup is a better thrower than the starter.

LC played horrible. giving up big plays at the end of the first half and the score at the end of the half was just ugly. Shouldn't have happened. This game could have been much worse.

Heelan looks like the real deal, very good ground game that will be tough to stop.

I heard from my Harlan buddy that they looked good and should have a great year, said Harlan has a large physical O- Line and had a good game plan to slow down LC. He said the spread should have been worse, late score on turnover and long kick return before half. Like the previous post he said LC played sloppy but they have some studs that were a handful

any reports on Creston or Glenwood? I was surprised to see the Creston score, thought their O-Line would be unstoppable.

i know for fact harlan was out without there starting qb(out for at least 3 weeks), and a offensive lineman(back next week i believe).qb schmitz, got hurt playing corner back. the coaches were impressed with his defensive play, stated he had a great feel for the ball...bladt stated qb play went from 100-25 with the 2nd qb, so schmitz was cream of the crop....the article stated that 3 or 4 guys that started last yr would not be for the game....from harlan tribune...when ur starting qb goes down...that is a big hit...if duggan went down for lewis central, they would have got beat...coach duggan stated after the game that harlan was way more physical in this game...harlan,s qb threw 3 interceptions, which really sealed it for lc....they got scores off some of the interceptions..the big problem for harlan is that the first 2 biggest games in the district are the first 2 games, creston and gleenwood....without there starting qb...they will probably have to win one of the 2 to get in the playoffs, if they can unbeaten the remainder of season...as the previous thread mentioned, harlan is big on offensive line....4 out of 5 are 250 to 315

the big surprise in the district friday, was boone beating creston...that sort of shocked me.

I am pretty sure the article said players would be playing in different positions this season...If bladt made the comment that QB play dropped from 100 to 25 well that's just great for the backup guy. I have seen both kids play and the second string guy is a much better thrower....much better in the pocket...much better overall as a raw qb. If history is any indication with Harlan the second string guy had no reps until the number 1 guy went down. So putting the blame on a kid who hasn't stepped on the field yet much less got meaningful reps in practice is idiotic. The DL is 1000% better than last year and that is due to Hoch coming in. Completely different line play from last year. As for the size....speed kills...gaps kill -- If a coach that plays them plays gap technique and stunts we will see how good those big guys can move
I am pretty sure that LC played base D and is not showing much right now - didn't seem to me that LC stunted much and pretty much played head up all night.

I am pretty sure one score off of the 3 picks

If a giant meteor flew out of the sky and hit the field nobody would have won. If Tom Brady was playing for Harlan they would have won. If my mom married somebody that was 6' 6" and 300 I would have been taller.....if if if...I was at the game and LC did not play that great. The harlan D line played very good.

So in your opinion will Harlan finish 1 or 2 in their district? Glenwood most have looked impressive, I know they have one of the best d-line guys in the state and Creston got upset and they are suppose to be unreal up front with Downing

I was at the game, I would say the biggest difference in the LC-Harlan game(s) of late is the mental aspect. In the past an LC victory over Harlan would have been a "tear the goal post down moment" now for LC they have bigger fish to fry. No disrespect to Harlan, great tradition and coaches and fans. For LC to get to the dome, they really have to clean things up. Against a Des Moines powerhouse, it would have been ugly. Best of luck to both teams going forward.

one thing for sure, harlan is better this year than last year....last year lewis central completely destroyed harlan.. should be interesting year

I agree with your views, 5 years ago it would have been a career win, today the players expect to win. I was not able to attend the game, it sounds like Harlan is on it's way back and LC is good but has to clean up a few things to be really good.

who looked like the "Guys" from LC? I plan on going to their game soon...I obvisouly know about the QB anyone else impressive on either side of the ball?

and we know this from one game? So due to the fact the lc destroyed harlan last year and the score was closer this year harlan is better than last year? Hmm..interesting...I will pass this logic along to everyone in the coaching industry....if you get destroyed one year and play closer the next then you are better than last year.

I would then say what I saw was a game that could have been easily 28 - 7 instead of 14 - 7 in the first quarter. And at that point if that game was indeed 28 - 7 then the momentum could have shifted and the score could have been much worse than last year. but hey, the score was closer than last year so we'll see you at the dome.

Yes I was at the game and the LC O line didn't look that good. I expected them to be much better but like I said Matt Hoch has done wonders with that d line. Last year guys were out of position continuously, not playing responsibilites, trying to be a hero. The D line on Friday was using their hands more than I have ever seen from d line in harlan. No heads down and run up the field....hands on lineman, getting push so that LBs could scrape downhill...big difference and I will tell you this....they didn't do it last year or in any other years that I have seen so I give full credit to hoch for that.

Well Dane Theobald was double teamed all night at D-End and still had 6 or 7 tackles so he is a load for sure. Damon Deyo played well on the defense in the trenches. Jack Sulentic at linebacker had the most tackles I believe. Heck the kicker/punter Nettles nailed a 45 yard field goal after multiple mistakes on the line setting the ball back 2 or 3 times. The kid(Nettles) also saved a touchdown on a kickoff with a real nice tackle. Offensively Simmons and Shipley had some nice catches, the jury is still out on the running game.

Can you shed some light on how the cyclones looked? Also anyone that has seen Glenwood play I would love to know more about them? Who will come out of that district and face the "Crush-saders"

Harlan looked good. The line play on both sides was much improved over last year. The 2nd team quarterback looked relaxed and confident,i all things considered. The only thing I found odd was how Harlan played the last 2 mins. I have seen them pull out some unbelievable wins in the past-I mean last minute flea-flickers and the works. It almost looked to me like they had the attitude that " hey-we will take a 10 point loss to a 4A school-better than last year" They ( Harlan) had time outs left, and LC was out-of- sorts at the end putting the ball on the carpet and some poor play calling...again-just my opinion. I like their (Harlan's) chances going forward. And for the record Coach B has won 400 more games than I have.

thanks for the overview, great tradition at Harlan and it sounds like they are much improved. I am going out on a limb and predicting Glenwood and Harlan emerge as the district champs eventually matching up with the Crush-aders of Heelan

I am not sure where people come up with this stuff. Lc played flat and was better even without duggan the better team. Is Harlan better look to see after week 4.
Lc defense looked ok and I think deyo at line is a bad idea. He should be back in the middle but hey that's me

As for Theobald ok game. Not his best and he was most definitely not doubled up all night. That's not even a scheme in Harlan to double up the ends. A few times they trapped and Harlan had two guys in him but unless I am missing something there is no scheme that had a double on the end unless one guy holds the guy up and the trapper takes him out. Those were missed assignments

Anyway the district is up in the air. Don't know how good boone is but after looking at that film Boone has a very good defensive plan against that creston line.

Glenwood who knows but again after week four it will be clearer

Word is Bishop Heelan is really good this year. Heelan vs Harlan matchups are always interesting. Solon is the underrated 3a team this year. I predict a Heelan vs Solon title game.

You should know all about Glenwood since your son played there last year, is that where your insight on Harlan is coming from. My nephew is playing against the wood tonight so I'll be in attendance. If you're going to tonight's game to support your sons old team ( the wood) let us know who wins the future district match-up against the Jackets and Lewis Central. Interested to see how the "WOOD" stops Big Baker.

Also reading your old post about the Duggan kid not being a D-1 recruit, after seeing him play live are you still going with that? almost fell off my chair when I read your post the other night. I have not seen him play in over a year but a lot of teams sure think he's the real deal.

Ah yes you are correct sir.... About some of it. Never said duggan wasn't a D1 guy. Said he wasn't a D1 qb. Just as I said Boyle and the Pella kid wasn't either but hey they were recruited so they have to be a lock. Like I said over on the 4a board I watched the Gorman dematha game and those guys have offers from everywhere but played their first ever games last week. So with regards to duggan last week... Austin Simmons was better.

As for Baker he's good but let's be honest Denison is jv at best

Maybe we saw a different game. Deyo looked to me like he was getting it done in the trenches. To clarify, Theobald was double teamed every time Harlan passed the ball. No debate on that one. It seemed that more likely than not he( theobald) will see a lot of that this year because A.L. did the same thing last night. Logan Jones had a huge night on D -much improved over the Harlan game-and the sophomore Kobes ( QB sub for injured Duggan) would start at 75% of the schools in western Iowa. All he did was darn near throw for 200 yards. As far as how good is Harlan? It sounds like they had a good night last night. Glenwood did too!

I was in another state working when Simmons was playing. How many D1 offers did he have?
