First Round 4A

Yeah, I think with how mediocre the lower half of the bracket is this year, very little chance of any upsets. Maybe Prairie gives Johnston a run for their money. But that’s probably about it.

Pleasant Valley might put up a good fight. Ankeny may be a little more Seasoned with the schedule they have had.

Agree with CF_93, think Johnston and Prairie game is only one that looks to have a chance to stay less than a 10 point difference. I know anything can happen, but rest of the games look to be 20+ points and I hate to think what CF is going to do to Indianola.

Will be interesting to see if Fort Dodge offense can put enough pressure and points on the board to stay with Dowling.

Can’t see Ft. Dodge staying with Dowling.

And yes, Indianola shouldn’t be too great a challenge for CF. CF being at home throughout the playoffs will be huge for this team and their passing game. The wind in the Prairie game slowed it down a bit.

Just curious, how'd CF arrange for having the UNI Dome their home field?

I was interested in what their arrangement with UNI (I would assume) is for being able to use the Dome for non-PO games.

I think it has to do with the fact that they need a new football field. The old field is in the middle of town by the landlocked high school. My guess is that they will go back outside with new facilities if they can pass the bond to build the new high school. They get no concession $$ from the Dome games and the sterile environment makes adjusting to outdoor playoff games in Oct/Nov a challenge. The wind at Prairie was awful and influenced CF's play for awhile. The pay each time they practice there or use it at all.

That is not meant to be an excuse for CF at all, but I think playing all of these games at home in the playoffs could be a definite advantage.

They did hang with Centennial, so I'm hoping

Personally, I don’t know why CF would ever leave the dome, short of UNI imploding the thing. All they have done as win something in the neighborhood of 80% of their games played there since it opened back in 1976. I know as a fan, I would much prefer to watch the game in climate controlled conditions, than sit through a freezing ice storm, or something. And from a competitive standpoint, it stands to reason that the best teams you’re going to play are going to be in the latter rounds, the very time you need that advantage most! Not to mention that it’s louder in there than any outdoor facility could ever hope to be with equivalent crowd size. I would be curious to know what CF tends to average in attendance vs their attendance before it opened.

I agree with all of this. But the cost is the issue that will lead to an outdoor stadium. I cannot wait to sit through four (hopefully) games inside the Dome.
It is louder in there, but the acoustics are terrible and sometimes the games drag in the Dome environment. But they arer usually up big at these times

CF has been playing its home games in the UNI dome since 1976. The now closed NU High was doing the same.

Make no mistake it took a Community effort to get ot built. CF does pay a annual fee to play their games there.

CF may build a new school, but I dont see a new football field in its future. You also have to remember that CF practices outside all year round.

A few years ago the Sophs. Started playing their home games up at the high school. So these current Seniors have less time playing in the Dome than any other classes before them.

So the Dome is not as big of a advantage as most people would think.

They may be inherently true. But from a schematic standpoint, I think they have been passing much more the last few years with Luke Gillett and Cael Loecher much more so than past teams, even becoming dependent upon it (as opposed to a simple change of pace, like the occasional play action plays they used to run). So I think the advantage that they lost by not playing there as sophomores is somewhat offset by taking a greater advantage schematically.

You are right, but you have to look at who is coaching the QB's and who is calling the plays. Im sure they would like to run more, but the passing game is open to them.

They have a real good UNI Dome record, they have a exceptional outdoor record as well.

If anything your personal theory is right to be able to play at such a High level home and away.

Cf is no longer all ground and pound. Cael is an exceptional QB and relied on Wolf for a number of games He is starting to spread it around a bit with the other WRs. Special teams are one of the best units in the state.

It is the defense that makes this team go, however.

I think the sophomore games at the high school were just a short-term thing with the conflict with UNI practices.

It is a combination of that and some of the teams we are playing do not have soph teams that travel. I know that we are not sending our soph teams on long distances.

This is only the 2nd time Cf has ever made the playoffs without a 1000yd rusher. The last time was 2008. This team has held the their opponents to the 2nd lowest total of points in a 9 game season of 51 pts. The record is 9pts set in 1939.

BC Moore agrees with you, here are his point spreads:

Johnston -5
Centennial -21
Dowling -21
Bettendorf -14
Valley -27
IC West -23
Waukee -25
Cedar Falls -29

One sneaky game may be #1 Centennial v #16 SEP. They played earlier and the game was tied at halftime 10-10 before Centennial pulled away.

My guess before 1976 they averaged somewhere around 500 or a little more. Just remembering from research I did.

When they played Wat East & West, George Hauser field was packed with the National Gaurd in Attendance as well.

I can get some game estimates out of the articles I have found, but it would take a long time to get average turnout pre-1976

I'd bet that of the 4A schools with a strong football tradition, CF has the worst facilities. This fall when it rained all week every week, Cedar Falls is about the only community in Iowa that has no field turf to practice on. When you compare CF to the DM suburb schools, Bettendorf, PV, LM, its embarrassing for CF.

I agree 100%. They have practiced at five or six different locations due to rain. It showed vs Senior. They were somewhat flat that game.
