Dowling Recruiting Class

They have actually started holding the signing ceremonies at the school they are taking the player from. Some consider this a bit arrogant but Dowling says they are just wanting all schools in the state to feel they have a small part in their championships. The title this year was celebrated at Lincoln, Johnston, East, Van Meter, Roosevelt among others. Just another form of community service really.

Plus the opposing coaches love the opportunity for their programs to view the trophy, banners and pictures of the inside of the Dome so that their teams know that it really does exist.

Also teaches a valuable life lesson... everything is for sale!

What is it you think they are selling? Tuition? discipline? hard work? team work? tradition? Success?

Seems like only the tuition and success is different from other schools...

Dowling is a very well coached team with excellent athletes. They work very hard, have tremendous tradition, spirit, and toughness. They play by a different set of rules than public schools. That is a fact. When you can offer all the above mentioned and also control who does and does not have to pay to participate that is different than everyone else. All schools "recruit" to a degree. No one else charges a sizable tuition to attend and then can offer the "perks" of a private institution without having to pay for it. That happens there. If you don't think it does you are either naive or just lying. This shouldn't take anything away from the team and their accomplishments.. they work very hard, as I said. BUT, to compare them winning to a public school winning is just different... it's far more admirable in my opinion when it happens for a public school. Please let me know if you believe anything I say is incorrect/ untrue. I would like to know how many kids who were contributors on this years state championship team did not walk into Dowling on day one freshman year. If the SEP running back goes there next year (as has been mentioned in this thread) that would further go to cheapen a potential championship for them in 2019.

That is way funny and a great response!!

If the SEP runningback left to attend Dowling, I would think the Dowling staff would do the right thing and not let him play.

He is already being recruited heavy and SEP going 2-7 next year is not going to change that.

45% of all Dowling students get some level of tuition assistance. I cant tell you if that percentage is higher or lower for football players. Seems a bit odd don’t you think that if Dowling recruited kids, it would only recruit football. That is where the success has been. They better fire that basketball, wrestling and other sports recruiters. Maybe they can get the former East High girls basketball or current SEP wrestling recruiter to help build the program.

It would seem peoples issues should be with the players and their parents that want to transfer to Dowling (or any other school for that matter.). Certainly, Dowling has the advantage of no set district boundaries. But you really think Dowling is actually recruiting a rb from SEP during the weeks they are trying to win a championship? I can tell you directly from a football parent at SEP that Dowling has not been part of this process at all. This is all coming from the kid and his family. Should Dowling tell him “no thanks” if he and his family want him to transfer? I think Dowling also has advantage for families moving into area. If their kids play football, where would you want to play given the recent history. After all is said and done if you are right, they cant do any better the cost being exactly the same as their public school.

Don’t know this years football team well enough to know who wasn’t there freshman year. I know WR from Johnston was new this year and a couple of this year senior lineman were new 2-3 years ago. Maybe the WR didn’t have a roster spot at Johnston when they took in the all state lineman in from DCG this year?

Everybody knows “somebodies neighbor’s brother that is getting full tuition from Dowling just to play football”. It has been a tired refrain that seems to come and go with the actual number of titles Dowling wins. Could a football player be going to school for free? Tuition assistance numbers say yes, but could it be they also be going to school for free if they were simply a student or in the band. There are many more of them by far, but that dosn’t fit the message board crowds narrative.

Your statistics and commentary are also the same tired refrain that has been used by Dowling people for years to justify what some of them either aren't aware of or want to ignore. If Dowling examines their tuba section after freshman year, proactively (or re-actively) recruits a tuba player to come join the band and then figures out how to sponsor said tuba player so they don't have to pay for tuition, I stand corrected. And you are right.. if they are doing that.. the program leads in those activities aren't doing a very good job. I have no problem with them recruiting every 8th grade kid in Central Iowa... that's how they get students. But when that post 8th grade "recruitment" seems to really end up helping the football program and then Dowling people won't acknowledge the differing rules they play by... it's just disingenuous. But that certainly wouldn't support the Dowling fans' narrative of superiority or just "outworking" everyone else.

I am not privy to the SEP running back situation. Didn't know about it until it was discussed in this thread. But maybe they should say "no thanks" to accepting a one year transfer and let whomever the junior running back is play next year.. the same way it's done 99% of the time at the schools they compete against.

Yeah, statistics and facts due tend to lend to boring message board fodder. Where is all the transfer uproar when Johnston, SEP, Urbandale and Valley do it? Oh, nevermind, it doesn't matter.
