Now that baseball is winding down, I'm ready to start talking some football. Who else is game? To kick it off, for Wapsie Valley I anticipate Bryce Kleitch (OL and DL 12) having a great year. He's been working really hard in the weight room, getting quicker and bulking up. I look for both Trevor Sauerbrei (RB 10) and Tanner Sauerbrei (HB and DE 12) to also have good years, both members of a speedy 4x100 team. Kobe Risse (QB 10) is another player to watch as he is very poised in QB spot. Very athletic Soph class, will be interesting to see how they all get involved. Outstanding questions on line as far as who else steps up. Coach Foster always seems to put the pieces together in a way that maximizes their abilities. I'm ready for some football!!

Wasnt Saurbrei the QB last year, not HB ? Is Rissi going to beat him out at QB. I know they have a lot of track speed but man they lost a ton of linemen on both sides of the ball.

He was. Too early to be certain, but I think they are trying to find ways to maximize skill level on the field by trying some new things. The Risse kid is also a pretty good athlete.

Yes, biggest question mark is at line. I think there are a few kids stepping up but won’t know for sure until we get onto field and see what they can do.

They not only lost most of their line, Brown, Kerns, Schares, Weepie and Richards but also top 2 RBs in Kuhlman and Schrader. I didnt realizr they lost that much until looking at quickstats and their production. Will their #s be down a little roster wise as I know a lot of small schools are in that 30 to 40 range total 9 - 12 and that makes it tough if not impossable to play curtain raisers before the varsity on friday nights.

There was a large graduating class (14 ish) and I don't believe the incoming class is that large, so guessing in the 25 - 30 range. Offensively, not only did we lose both RBs but also most of the receiving production as well. Coach Foster has his work cut out for him, but he seems to find a way to maximize the athleticism that he is given and the Soph class, while undersized, is pretty quick with good hands. Maybe pass more?

Hudson has a lot of skill positions back, and looked very fast at 7-on-7. Will they be able to replace their line?

The only thing wapsie has to worry about is the line. Just reloading everywhere else. Don’t feel like the rb position will change much. Might get more production this year. More Big play runs because better break away speed

Unfortunately the line is a vital cog in making it all work. Let’s hope some of the young men step up! How do you think defense will look?

The D will be a typical wapsie D. Year in n year out they always show up on the defense it. The key is we always have smart athletic linebackers.

Its apparent there really is no general consensus on how D7 will play out. Hudson is the predicted winner in almost every ranking (newspapers, coaches, analysts, etc...) I can find, but after that there is a huge discrepancy. Gazette has Hudson, North Tama, WV, EB, GC, etc... Radio Iowa in their top 10 has Hudson (1), WV as (10). Des Moines Register's top 10 has Hudson (1), EB (7), WV (9). Courier I believe had Hudson, and EB in top 10 and WV just outside. Iowa Preps predicts Hudson, GC, WV, EB, etc... Should be an interesting year! Can't wait for it to begin!

Just goes to show how tough that district is going to be, i guess we will know in about 9 weeks.

Is this the year that BCLUW moves up a little? Their line is young, but they have decent size. A few of their skill position guys have some state track speed.

They may be better as a team this year but you might not see it record wise as the district they are in is loaded so wins will be very hard to get.

Predictions?
Game of the week: GC 35 Belle Plaine 28
WV 35 Clayton Ridge 7
EB 28 MV 14
Hudson 56 Jesup 14
NT 21 North Mahaska 7
BCLUW 36 Colfax Mingo 30
GMG 14 DM Gradview Park 27

Other thoughts?

Actual: GC 34 Belle Plaine 22
WV 28 C.R. 8
EB MV
Hudson Jesup
GMG 26 DM Grand View 36
North Tama 69 North Mohaska 6
Looks accurate. BP will take Grundy Center by 3 TD’s. EB handles MV by 30+
Looks like you were right on the EB :) Although GC exceeded your expectations. I know North Mahaska probably isn’t all that challenging but was surprised by North Tama’s thumping of them. Pretty sure EB beats C.R. next week pretty handily.

BCLUW lost a lot of skill position players, including a 3 year starting QB that passed for 1500 yards last year (he was INA All-State, even though that was a mess he was a heck of QB and the leader of that team). He also did the punting, kickoffs, and played DB. He also would have been their leading rusher if you didn't count all the sacks he took. They also lost their leading tackler and their best WR.

They have some size coming up on the line but they are going to struggle to win a game. That GMG BCLUW game might be a game that decides who goes winless on the year.

Quick Stats shows 5 completions and 3 INTs for the first game.

I watched a little of the Wapsie/ CR game on film... they are disciplined and athletic, but will struggle against teams with any athletic size. CR was big and physical but not disciplined up front.

You very well could be right. Line play was my biggest concern coming into this year. Although, this was most of their first varsity experience, so it is difficult to know how much was inexperience and how quickly they will learn versus lack of athletic ability. I was pleasantly surprised with our pass blocking and QB play, so I anticipate much more passing than we have done in the past, which will then hopefully open up some running lanes late in the game. Much more balanced than our historically run heavy teams.

Man was i off on my scores this week!
North Tama over Lisbon 49-0 (wow, that’s an avg of 59 points over last two games)
GC falls to South Hamilton 14-26
BCLUW over East Marshall 14-0
GMG over Columbus Juntion
Hudson over Wtloo Columbus 14-0
WV over Denver 31-16
EB over CR 42-6

District went 6-1 this week!! Nice job!

WV/Denver
This is not your typical Denver team, however, WV was up 31-0 shortly after half then Wapsie seemed to let off the gas mentally and gave up 16 unanswered points. Lots of kids cramping - we need to clean that up and work on stronger second half’s, otherwise looked very good.
