District 7 and District 8 HERE!

It looks as if this district is a little down this year. I've said all along, the Mighty Hawks will win this district, but Madrid and Audubon will have something to say about that. W-G and Madrid both have 1 loss, but to very good 1A schools in Ogden and Van Meter. Here are the games this week. Who you got and what else do you think of this district.

Audubon at Madrid: This is the game of the night in the district, but I look for Madrid to win this one with Audubon's qb still out I believe.
Guthrie Center at Woodward-Granger: This one won't be close and expect the jv to get a lot of snaps in the 2nd half. Guthrie Center is clearly lacking athletes that they had in previous years.
Martensdale-St. Marys at Earlham: Earlham had a close loss Friday to WCV, but I think MTSM is still better and will win by a few TD's.
Woodward Academy at Bedford: The Academy got better from week 1 to week 2, but thats a long drive and Bedford gets their first W of the year.

All records are erased and now the games count. Look for an exciting district season in 2013. Oh yeah, the weather looks to be amazing on Friday.

Re: District 7

Audubon's QB played last week, so he is already back in the lineup. The district is definitely down, but has been for a few years with the exception of WG last year and Madrid the years before that. The middle of the district could go any direction as Audubon, Bedford, Earlham, and Martensdale all have a legitimate shot to make the playoffs this year.

Re: District 7

D7 was not very strong last year. I think D8 is deeper than last year but lacks the LOMA team they had last year. Will be interesting to see how D7/D8 matchup in the playoffs.

LOMA/Griswold/Avoca/Westwood ?? top 4 no order

Madrid/WoodwardGranger/?????????

Re: District 7

I'm still not sold on Westwood yet. I think Underwood is still better. Westwood did beat a D1 team, so maybe that anoints them, I don't know...

I could see AHST and Westwood battling it out for 4th place in D8, with the loser putting the pads away early. Griswold has to be an early favorite with the yardage they put up on St Albert week 1, and the amount of talent returning. LoMa will put up a fight though, and it should be an impressive battle of the 'bones when they meet. D8 seems to be a little bit more even with LoMa losing the stallions they had last year. Whoever wins this district has to be a favorite for reaching the semis against D1/D2.

Re: District 7

East Mills won't play a team that had a winning record last year until week 5 against LoMa. They did beat two bigger schools, but I'm not sure either Shenandoah or Clarinda Academy would make playoffs if they were in D8 this year. East Mills week 4 against Westwood will be interesting to see if either of those teams can make the jump to the upper portion of their district this season.

Re: District 7

I will admit that District 8 is much better than District 7, but I don't think that the Mighty Hawks couldn't beat anyone of those teams from district 8 on a given night. I think we will shock everyone in a supposedly down year and go to the dome! Just my humble opinion though.

Here are the picks for District 8 this week. Who ya got and what are ya thinking.

A-H-S-T, Avoca at Westwood, Sloan: AHST is a pretty solid team and dismantled a district 7 favorite in Audubon.
East Mills at Riverside, Oakland: Oakland Riverside in a good matchup, but they also beat Audubon in week 1 in a close game.
Underwood at Griswold : Griswold to me is the team to beat in this district.
West Monona, Onawa at Logan-Magnolia: Logan Magnolia. Don't know much about West Monona.

Re: District 7

How does this years D8 compare to D8 of last year?

To me it seems like they are missing the top end team they had in LOMA last year.

I would take another look at that EM vs Oakland game. You have Oakland that lost to Shenandoah last week by at least two scores. The same Shenandoah team that EM beat by at least 3 scores. Oakland does have a 1 point win over a team I know nothing about. With the exception that they are 0-2 so far this young season. EM did beat Clarinda Academy by a large score. Clarinda Academy is a team that can struggle since they are working with young men that have had very little experience working with others towards a common goal. That being said, Clarinda Academy did play Clark a 1-2 team close. Losing by 8.

Realizing that this is high school football. I still think that everything points to EM being the favorite.

I think he's a little too high on Audubon. They are an average team at best, and probably a little below that this season. They really don't have any amazing threats that a team has to focus on, but did move the ball okay against AHST (288 yards), even though they lost by 20. Will be interesting to see how they do in the Jungle Friday night.

I think Riverside vs East MIlls will be a close game. Riverside seems to be much improved from last year and last year's game was fairly even. Not sure that the results of this game make much difference down the road, but will be a good judge of how good D8 is compared to D7.

District 7Audubon 49, Madrid 21 This was a shocker in a lot of eyes. Audubon winning didn't shock me, but the score did. Wow factor of the night.
Bedford 27, Woodward Academy 19: Two bad teams, but Bedford came back out on top.
Earlham 26, Martensdale-St. Marys 14: Earlham the early sleeper team of the year for sure in D7.
Woodward-Granger 47, Guthrie Center 7: This score looks bad, but GC is a fiesty group to say the least. The Hawks got a few calls early that helped set up some scores. The Mighty Hawks scored 4 times in last 8 minutes. Fumble return for TD, INT for TD, a 60 yard run and a long pass against some subs. For once, I didn't like the long pass play when the score was 41-7 and we went for 2? Didn't understand what coach Ashman was trying to accomplish or prove there, because thats not what we should be about. Other than that, it was a hard hitting game. We still have a lot to work on, but once our OLine starts getting it together, we will be a top 10 team. Still say its 1. W-G 2. Audubon and then a fight for 3rd and 4th. Big games this week to determine who wants to make a statement.

District 8A-H-S-T, Avoca 24, Westwood, Sloan 6: AHST is pretty solid. Still got your 13 points.
East Mills 41, Riverside, Oakland 7: Is East Mills for real? Would like to hear more about this game from someone else.
Griswold 41, Underwood 7: Griswold is proving to be a beast of a team. I called this early in the summer.
Logan-Magnolia 47, West Monona, Onawa 12: Logan Magnolia won't give up that 1st spot so easily.

Is Audubon that good or is Madrid in for a long season? Thought Madrid would grind it out like usual.

I think it could be a combination of both. We don't play them for another month, but if they lose one of the next two games, it could get ugly at the TigerBowl.

Madrid played very poorly. Too many turnovers and penalties. Could be a long season if the boys don't get some things figured out. Audubon is okay, but not overly impressive. Good QB that is pretty shifty in the open field.

I wasn't at their game. But looking at the stats and listening to radio reports on the East Mills/Riverside game. It sounds like Riverside was of the opinion that they only had to stop East Mills RB Colby Jennings. Who had been averaging 200 yds/game rushing. They did a fair job of that holding him to 83 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns. But there is one problem with selling out to the run defense. East Mills has one of the top sprinters in the State of Iowa. And he went wild against Riverside. 192 yards recieving and 4 touchdowns on 6 catches. An average of 32 yards per catch. EM also had another reciever with 68 yards on 2 catches. They threw for almost 300 yards. Something they had not needed to do yet this season. So they are not a one trick pony. You will have to be ready for anything when you play them.

But I think the one phase that is really starting to show is their defense. Only giving up 14 points in the first 3 games.Quik Stats show they are giving up 45 yards rushing per game and 74 yards passing per game. I know that they haven't played their toughest games yet. But it's like that rock that starts rolling down hill. The longer it rolls the harder it is to get stopped.

I'm sure there are some people from that area that are on this message board. Maybe one of them will open up and tell us a lot more than I can.

A couple of big games in each district this Friday. Looks to be perfect weather for everyone as of right now.

District 7

Bedford at Guthrie Center: Battle of a couple of not so good teams. I looked at quick stats, GC is averaging less than 5 points a game on offense. If Bedford gets 14 points, GC may not be able to score that much. Still going with GC though, thats a long drive and something has to give on offense for GC.
Earlham at Woodward Academy: I'm not sure who will win, but my hope is that Woodward doesn't win. I said that Earlham is the sleeper team, and we may just find out Friday. Earlham has a decent junior class, and maybe they are coming into their own right now. Hopefully Earlham can take down the class 2A team in the district.
Madrid at Martensdale-St. Marys: I think Madrid will have enough here, but if MTSM comes out on top, there will be a warning sign as you drive into Madrid.
Woodward-Granger at Audubon: Game of the night in District 7. Looking forward to the drive to Audubon and two pretty solid teams battling it out. Still think the Mighty Hawks are to much. This one will almost for sure decide the district winner.

District 8

Griswold at A-H-S-T, Avoca: Game of the night in District 8 for sure. Have said all along, Griswold is the favorite until someone proves me wrong.
Logan-Magnolia at Riverside, Oakland: Logan Magnolia will roll. I think Riversides 1 win against Audubon was not a mirror of who they really are.
Underwood at West Monona, Onawa: Really don't know enough about either team to comment.
Westwood, Sloan at East Mills: Is East Mills for real? This is a decent matchup for them.

District 7:

Bedford
@ Guthrie Center, battle of teams with a lot of youth (Bedford with only 3 Seniors!!). If Bedford plays like they are capable of they will get the W! If not, it could be a long night! It all comes down to who makes the fewest mistakes in this one.
Earlham @ Woodward Academy, this one is a toss up!!! If Earlham can stop Woodward's outside game they will win, otherwise if Woodward seizes the momentum it could be a long night for the Cardinals.
Madrid@ Martensdale-St. Marys, Madrid comes out fired up after a disappointing loss to Audubon and beats the Blue Devils by a couple touchdowns.
Woodward-Granger@Audubon, W-G may not have the same firepower in the backfield as last year, but I think they still have enough to pull off the victory if they are able to shut down Audubon's dual threat QB.

District 8:

Griswold
@A-H-S-T, Definitely the game of the night in Southwest Iowa in Class A. Going to be a hard hitting one for sure! this one comes down to whoever can take care of the football. Most likely Griswold comes to play solid on both sides of the ball and hands A-H-S-T their first loss of the year.
Logan-Magnolia@Riverside, LO-MA flexes their muscles in this one and wins big!!!
Underwood@ West Monona, Underwood comes out fired up after getting beat handily by Griswold and takes their frustrations out on the Spartans with a big win.
Sloan Westwood @ East Mills, In order for Westwood to have a chance in this one, they have to shut down the three headed monster named Jennings, Currin, and Tupper.

Well the Mighty Hawks took our first defeat in over 3 years in district play. It was bound to happen sooner or later. We had our chances, but hats off to the boys at Audubon. They have a pretty good team and it was 2 evenly matched teams. I don't see the Wheelers losing to anyone in the district, so they look to have locked up the district.
A few scores that jumped out to me in these two districts. District 7: GC beating Bedford that bad. Have to think that Bedford had some injuries. #2 in that district. Madrid may have just woke up after a couple of loses. Really think they are the #3 team and Earlham/Guthrie Center and MTSM are #4 team in our district. Woodward Academy and Bedford look to be pretty bad.
District 8: Riverside beating LOMA. Totally didn't see that coming. #2 in that district. Not really shocked, but AHST beating Griswold.

This weeks games:
District 7Bedford at Audubon: If GC handled Bedford, then Audubon will destroy them. Audubon by 5 TD's.
Earlham at Madrid: Game of the night in the district. I really think Earlham is the 4th best team, but Madrid will still have enough in this one.
Martensdale-St. Marys at Woodward-Granger: Coming off our first district loss in over 3 years, Coach Ashman will have them ready to play Friday. The Mighty Hawks by 4 TD's.
Woodward Academy at Guthrie Center: Something tells me this will be closer than most think. The Academy has some speed. If GC wants any chance at that 4th spot, this is a must win.
District 8A-H-S-T, Avoca at West Monona, Onawa: I think AHST made a big statement on Friday night. This one won't be close.
East Mills at Logan-Magnolia: The game of the night in this heavy district. I think its a pick em game. LOMA at home, gotta go with them.
Griswold at Westwood, Sloan: Griswold looks to rebound. They want to keep their hopes alive for the 2nd place in the district.
Riverside, Oakland at Underwood: Look for Oakland to pound away in this one. Riverside is for sure the surprise team.

It was a pretty non eventful evening in the two districts. Madrid scoring 66 on Earlham was kindof a surprise to me and Audubon keeps rolling in District 7. Audubon will roll the rest of the way, it will just depend on how much they want to run the scores up from here to the end of the season. The Mighty Hawks struggled against MTSM more than I thought. Need to start playing Hawk football or our season will end that first Wednesday of the playoffs. In district 8, LOMA shutting out East Mills was not a huge shocker. Other than that, last weeks games were about what I thought. Here are last weeks scores.
District 7Audubon 45, Bedford 0
Guthrie Center 34, Woodward Academy 20
Madrid 66, Earlham 28
Woodward-Granger 22, Martensdale-St. Marys 8

District 8A-H-S-T, Avoca 62, West Monona, Onawa 0
Griswold 23, Westwood, Sloan 6
Logan-Magnolia 16, East Mills 0
Riverside, Oakland 35, Underwood 13

Here are Week 6 in the two districts. Season is over half over. Looks to be considerably cooler on Friday. Football weather has finally arrived.

District 7

Audubon at Guthrie Center: Guthrie Center is improved and will come up and hit you, but Audubon is still the beast in District 7. This will be a 3 TD game. Game of the night in the district.
Madrid at Woodward Academy: Madrid seems to be rolling on offense now. Madrid big.
Martensdale-St. Marys at Bedford: MTSM shocked me Friday. Bedford has had 2 rough games at GC and Audubon. I'll take MTSM in this one. Close game.
Woodward-Granger at Earlham: Thought Earlham would give Madrid a better game, guess not. The Hawks will roll big in this one. Excited to see the new stadium.
District 8Logan-Magnolia at Westwood, Sloan: LOMA big in this one.
Riverside, Oakland at A-H-S-T, Avoca: AHST is the best in this district until proven otherwise. Its at AHST, so I'm going with them in this. Game of the night for sure in the district.
Underwood at East Mills: East Mills needs a game to get over a shutout. This could be a good one for them.
West Monona, Onawa at Griswold: Still solid on Griswold. This is all Griswold in this one.

Earlham vs. WG will be a better match-up than you think IMO Vinnie. It is not only about stats of common opponents it is also about individual player match-ups and style of play. Game of the week in this district.

I agree. Earlham's size could be a problem for WG. If WG's line struggles to move the big boys up front, Earlham could hang in and pull off the upset. Earlham would need a big night out of their o and d lines as their offense if not really designed for comebacks. They will need to pound WG to wear them down if they hope to win.

WG better hope that Nieland stays healthy, because he seems to be the only offense they have. Their defense has been playing well though, which has kept their lack of scoring from being an issue. Will definitely be interested to see how the game against Earlham turns out.

If the Mighty Hawks get beat by Earlham, then we have fallen farther than I had hoped. Madrid just beat Earlham by 38 points. I guess it could be considered the game of the night in the district, but more or less I'm hoping that its not. We are going to get back to Hawk football. Defense and grinding out possessions.

Scheme it if you are Earlham. Get your best defensive player on the hoof and best tackler protected so he can run free and spy the 40+ carry Nieland.

Well, Earlham was not very good. The Mighty Hawks did whatever we wanted to. There were no real good games in the district. But everyone knows what week it is this week. District 7 has one big game (Madrid coming here to Woodward) and District 8, the 4 out the 5 best teams all play each other. Here are the scores from Friday, and this weeks games for Friday with picks.

District 7Audubon 33, Guthrie Center 6
Martensdale-St. Marys 22, Bedford 18
Woodward-Granger 57, Earlham 13

Madrid at Woodward Academy
District 8A-H-S-T, Avoca 49, Riverside, Oakland 13
East Mills 47, Underwood 13
Griswold 68, West Monona, Onawa 6
Westwood, Sloan 16, Logan-Magnolia 14

District 7Earlham at Bedford: Although the Hawks steam rolled Earlham, I still think they are better than Bedford. Earlham by 2 + TD'S.
Guthrie Center at Martensdale-St. Marys: Toss up for who wants to make the playoffs. MTSM will score a few points GC can't score points.
Madrid at Woodward-Granger: Game of the night in the district. Madrid will score, but they won't put up over 30 on us. Im still going with the Mighty Hawks. 28-21. Looks to be a great night for a game.
Woodward Academy at Audubon: Again, Audubon will roll the rest of the year, but by how much will they get it done.
District 8A-H-S-T, Avoca at East Mills: AHST seems to be the cream of the crop in the district. East Mills is tough, but AHST will win this game.
Griswold at Riverside, Oakland: I think people are figuring Oakland Riverside out. Ill take Griswold in this one. Now conceding they are the 2nd best team in the district.
Underwood at Logan-Magnolia: LOMA wins easily.
Westwood, Sloan at West Monona, Onawa: Only these two teams care about this game.

Paul you predicted Madrid would not score 30 on W-G and the final score will be 28-21 W-G. You might be right about the 30, but according to your prediction Madrid can score 29 pts and still win. I'm picking Madrid 34-26.

Definitely agree with your post.
My predictions for D7 will be: Audubon, Madrid, Woodward-Granger, Martensdale-St. Marys
D8 is a little more complicated. D8 has much better teams this year than D7.
My D8 predictions are: AHST, Griswold, East Mills, Logan.
If AHST can get W's these next two weeks they will win the district. They should easily go through playoffs unless they play Griswold again. These are my top two teams for going to the dome.

I actually love to hear that Madrid will beat us. It will be a good game. We need a rivalry. Still think the Mighty Hawks are to good for you Madrid Tigers. I don't think that they can stop us. The crowd will be big, the game will be big, but in the end, the best team will win and I really think that W-G is just to powerful to let Madrid win. Can Friday get here fast enough. Can't start before 7, as I need to get there in time.

Yes. It was about time this game was revived after so many years of not playing each other when there was no good reason not to. Should be a good environment for a football game and it appears the weather may be perfect as well. Looks like rain has been taken out of the forecast. So the gate should be pretty good.

I agree that it will be a good game, and Madrid's defense may not be able to stop WG's offense. BUT, can WG's defense stop Madrid's offense? Both offenses are primarily pound the run between the tackles with few "gimmicks" - WG does throw in a bubble screen or jet sweep now and again. As long as that swamp of a field in Woodward doesn't get another 2 inches of rain on it (like last week) this game may be a race to 50 with the last team to have the ball winning. Nieland is a very difficult back to bring down, but the Gibbons brothers and company will get their yards too. I am too biased to throw out a prediction, but I would definitely take the over.

We here at Woodward just loath having the Academy share our field (sarcasm at its finest). I went after work and checked out the field. Pretty beat up, but its late in the year and its 2 teams that run straight forward. Still think the Hawks win again in this series. Can't wait for a big crowd and a few of my good friends from Madrid to come and eat some crow. The Hawks have to make Madrid earn a score, and not get the big runs. We will see tomorrow night. Its HS football at its finest.

I know you inserted a sarcastic skew to how that should be taken, but what did WA contribute to that new stadium? I have heard $250,000? Not sure if true. If true, what is the likelihood that stadium is built?

I can definitely confirm the $250K number - I would definitely let the Academy run track at the Jungle if they would like to make a donation of about half that number :) I will talk to the Director about making that happen.

So much for "no way Madrid scores 30 points on WG"! 44-8. Woodward's offense was shut down from the beginning of the game. 86 total yards at half time.... So much for the potent WG offense. I'm not sure Nieland even carried 10 times the entire game. Madrid shut down whatever wg wanted to do and they could only muster up one drive where they even got close to the endzone. Madrid scored at will without even needing to attempt a pass. WG's so called stellar defense could not contain the Gibbons brothers rushing attack. It was a butt kicking in every sense of the term. Nieland was definitely a disappointment on the field. Unsportsmanlike penalties and not even shaking players or coaches hands after the game just shows his true colors. I thought Nixon was a dang good D-lineman, but that was about the extent of their players who impressed me. Madrid showed up to play and were fired up to get bragging rights for the next 365 days.

I must admit I was expecting a closer game but I guess I shouldn't be surprised with Tigertown rolling!

Ouch! Congrats to a very good Madrid football team. For sure didn't see that coming. Madrid did what every they wanted to all night long and there was nothing we could do to stop it. We have not played good football since our district opener against Guthrie Center. I guess the football gods are giving us what we deserve after throwing 50 yard TD's and going for 2 point conversions when leading by 4 + touchdowns against GC. When you don't play like you want to win, you're going to get your teeth kicked in by a very well coached team.
On a side note, some of our kids, coaches and parents should be embarrassed by their actions tonight (I noticed the actions on the field, but did not see the hand shaking incident). If that is true about some of the kids not shaking hands, I am sorry. That is uncalled for. Good luck to Madrid going forward.

From what I saw, Nieland and Garland were the only ones who played dirty at all during the game and both were at the end of the 4th Qtr. Kooiker loves to hold, but I don't consider that dirty playing. Was very impressed with Canova's actions after the game: very respectful and genuine with both players and coaches. I heard quite a few players talking about how he handled himself. Overall, I think the majority of Hawks were respectful and played smart, so don't take my comments about a few athletes as defining the whole team.
